Last evening the fire department had a controlled burn/training for new cadets. 19* out and Dave was gone for a good seven hours. I rode out for a few hours. One has to salute these men and women for their dedication.
A small burn (it's what stream's are called in Scotland) in the Scottish Highlands, tumbling its way over and around the rocks. And so ends my trip exploring Gleann an t-Slugain, but I will be back next year as it confirms I can definitely climb Ben Avon when the conditions are right.
I've been taking mainly butterfly shots recently, so last night I decided to play at reworking a few shots from last month. Burn Again is by Kubb
"Controlled burns" are done to remove diseased plants, excessive dry brush that might be tinder for a wildfire, invasive species, or for other control reasons.
Sometimes, they lose "control". A horrible example is a controlled burn in Michigan several years ago, which was done to promote the growth of Jack Pine trees, a necessity to encourage the nesting of endangered Kirtland Warblers. A windstorm spread the fire to the devastation of almost an entire county of Michigan.
This picture shows the product of a controlled burn at Merritt Island NWR. New growth was evident throughout the area, which was probably the desired result, but a very large area was burned off. No one could say if that was the intent.

Alyth is a town in Perth and Kinross, Scotland.
The Burn of Alyth runs through the town with footbridges criss-crossing it.
The village of Garrigill is located approximately 5 miles from Alston and just to the east of it there is a deep gorge and an impressive tumbling Ashgill Burn.
Ashgill Force is the main waterfall located directly below an arched road bridge. The waterfall has a 50ft drop and it is possible to walk behind it due to the erosion of the rocks. Ashgill Force is visible in the background.
Slightly downstream from the main waterfall are a series of other smaller falls and bridges crossing the burn.
