Cai Rang Floating Market es uno de los más conocidos y visitados mercados flotantes del mundo. Un intenso tráfico de pequeñas y medianas embarcaciones de un lado al otro del río intercambiando mercancías de todo tipo. Como atracción turística que es, ha perdido algo de autenticidad, aún así, es visita obligada en la región del Mekong. En Cai Rang la actividad empieza temprano, sobre las 05:00 de la mañana, para empezar a decaer sobre las 11:00. La “hora punta” es sobre las 8:00, momento de más transito en el río. Una vez entre las embarcaciones, no paran de acercarse pequeñas embarcaciones ofreciendo café, comida, refrescos, frutas, etc. Sin duda que la afluencia de turistas ha provocado que muchos de ellos abandonen la comercialización de frutas, pescado y otros productos para enfocarse en el turista. Cai Rang reúne a los pequeños productores y agricultores de la zona en el río, donde intercambian y venden sus productos. Este mercado se realiza a diario, y además de las negociaciones de embarcación en embarcación, las orillas también tienen pequeños locales donde comprar o vender productos.
Cai Rang Floating Market is one of the best known and most visited floating markets in the world. I've posted a series of photographs of the Melbourne's Webb Bridge recently. My earlier shots all showed some of the abstract shapes and angles of the bridge, but this photo provides a lot more context as to the functionality of the pedestrian bridge over the Yarra River.
It's a shame about the graffiti, but I guess it adds a bit of authenticity to its urban setting.
San Diego is marketed as America's Finest City, with year-round near perfect weather, beautiful beaches, quick access to the desert, and plentiful opportunities for fun in the sun. "One foot in the Pacific, one foot in the desert" and an authenticity different from California's other major cities.
Sometimes, when the winters have more moisture than normal, San Diego reveals a different side...with green growth across the landscape, snow in the Laguna Mountains, and flooding in the streets along the coastal areas.
This is no less San Diego than the 70° and sunny days that we typically enjoy...it is authentic and no less beautiful to my eye.

Onyx’s layers are thin, parallel mineral bands formed by slow deposits of silica-rich water, creating the striking striped patterns the stone is known for......
The layers tell you:
How the stone grew.... (slow, steady mineral deposition)
Its authenticity.... (real onyx has straight, parallel bands; agate has curved bands)
Its strength.. (the layers can create natural planes of weakness)
Its beauty..
(the contrast between light and dark is what makes onyx prized)
In 1994, the Gibson Guitars Custom Shop built a limited production of 100 guitars, to commemorate their 1935 Roy Smeck Radio Grande. This is number 31/100, and according to the certificate of authenticity, it was purchased and used for stage work by well known instrumentalist, Norman Blake. I think Norman did not play it much, as the instrument is in like new, mint condition, except for some light finish crazing around the pick guard. Fujifilm X-A1 and XC16-50.

The Museum Boijman Van Beiningen's Depot is all about storing art and not so much displaying it. For some influential art works, an exeception was made. E.g. for ‘Lyrisches’ here. A neo-modernist building hosting a tribute to an early-modernist painting. Nice.
The painter Wassily Kandisnky was one of the founders of the Blaue Reiter (the blue rider) art movement. For the members, the countryside and its symbols were the only way to authenticity. The painting of the time with its neat and bourgeois conventions was frowned upon. The bourgeois art world in its turn, was not charitable towards the movement : ‘Hysterical daubs’, ‘crude intolerable outrages’ and ‘childish rubbish’ were some of the charcterizations used.
A ‘the established and the outsiders' thing….. Early modern music, e.g. Starvinsky’s ‘Le sacre du printemps’ was treated in a same way. It was nicknamed `the massacre of printemps', and called `a strange spectacle of laborious and puerile barbarism”. And orchestra members initially were opposed to playing it, they thought that the partiture was full of faults.
The quotes were used by historian Philipp Blom in his fabulous ‘The vertigo years’ (2008).

This is one of the last traditional houses in Nabeul, in Tunisia, North Africa; many others have been sold and demolished, replaced by sophisticated and soulless modern complexes! The problem is that the owners of this architectural jewel also want to sell it!! My biggest fear is that this old house will suffer the same fate as the other beautiful traditional houses! Preserving authenticity and architectural style should be a priority!! Otherwise we will dissolve in this invading modernity!!
I really liked the authenticity of this guy… the cool, quiet way in which he wordlessly allowed himself to be photographed. I showed him this picture and he asked me to send it to him… which of course I did.

It is rumored that underneath this depot are secret tunnels. According to rumors the tunnels were used by Al Capone's outfit as a means of escape and bootlegging. I am not sure of the rumor's authenticity but the older generation of locals have fun regaling us with it's tale.
