At what point does a photo become an illustration or work of art? Photoshop recently launched its Sky Replacement tool, and this weekend I gave it a whirl. You can see the original image here:
www.flickr.com/gp/starwizard/riCyoi
The sky replacement was very, very simple. The water reflection took a lot of trial and effort; it's not yet part of the sky replacement built-in tool. The water area still needs about an hour more of attention to clean up some pixel peeping details.
It's an amazing transformation into a believable scene I dream of capturing - I am sure I could sell this as a work of art, and most people would never question the authenticity.
At what point do our edits change a photo to an illustration or work of art?

Langkawi - Another quiet, peaceful spot on the back roads of our scooters, always on the lookout for hidden treasures and authenticity in every country. Here we are in front of a beautiful pond that I wanted to immortalize.
Thank you all for your faves and comments, which make me want to continue my modest contribution to sharing with all of you😊
"Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are."
It has taken a lot of years to peel away my own layers; Grateful for the journey. I am truly happy in my own skin.
This is me.
Daimler replica....a superb reproduction, keeping authenticity to the fore. Must be a boneshaker over those cobblestones...
Never be afraid of being different; always stay true to yourself, even if it comes at the cost of being withered. As long as your roots are deep in the soil, you are alive — even in silence and dryness. The peace that flows from your authenticity radiates around you, coloring every place you touch.
The freshly fallen snow makes for a spectacular scene as Boston and Maine F Units 4266 and 4268 lead their train through Sawyers River, MP 74.8 on the former Maine Central Mountain Sub. On the right is the historic section men's car house, adding to the authenticity of this amazing New England scene. Does it get any better than authentic B&M F units in the fresh snow? I'm honestly not sure it does, and this is easily one of my favorite scenes from the day.

A solitary brown horse stands quietly near a rural road in the hills of Ariège, France. Its back faces the camera, head turned slightly, as if listening to the landscape. Scattered rocks and wild grass surround it, while utility poles and wires stretch across the scene, hinting at human presence. In the background, mist drapes the forested mountains, softening the contours and adding depth. The image captures a moment of stillness and coexistence between nature, animal life, and rural infrastructure
Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire. It is strongly associated with the English and succeeding British royal family, and embodies almost a millennium of architectural history.
Windsor Castle grounds cover 13 acres (5.3 hectares).and combines the features of a fortification, a palace, and a small town. The present-day castle was created during a sequence of phased building projects, culminating in the reconstruction work after a fire in 1992. It is in essence a Georgian and Victorian design based on a medieval structure, with Gothic features reinvented in a modern style. Since the 14th century, architecture at the castle has attempted to produce a contemporary reinterpretation of older fashions and traditions, repeatedly imitating outmoded or even antiquated styles.[8] As a result, architect Sir William Whitfield has pointed to Windsor Castle's architecture as having "a certain fictive quality", the Picturesque and Gothic design generating "a sense that a theatrical performance is being put on here", despite late 20th century efforts to expose more of the older structures to increase the sense of authenticity.[9] Although there has been some criticism, the castle's architecture and history lends it a "place amongst the greatest European palaces

We live immersed in a massive, already organized chaos, yet we invent barriers and blocks out of a fear of getting lost. We feel the need to catalog everything, putting each thing away into separate compartments, just as we do at home with our bags.
But this desperate attempt to dam the world is an illusion. The more we try to catalog life to avoid losing our way, the more we create the exact conditions to truly lose ourselves. Because by constantly setting boundaries and limits to protect ourselves, we end up giving up our most precious asset: the freedom to be part of the chaos

Music is from Tricky - Wash My Soul
Centred on the artist as avatar, she builds, breaks down, gestures, cries, dissolves. Colour passes over her monochromatic existence. At all times somebody and nobody. An exercise in the minimal.
A still from a video filmed at a performance by SaveMe Oh in Second Life, 7 January 2022.
The last light of day melts into the horizon — soft gold and quiet blues meeting in perfect stillness. The sea rests in gentle rhythm, each wave whispering peace. A moment of calm, where time pauses and the world feels beautifully still. 🌅
A quiet moment at the edge of the world — she stands before the ocean as the sun melts into gold.
The wind carries stories, the waves whisper peace, and the light feels like a secret only the heart can hear. 🌊🌅
Beautiful, epic , vast .. a loving work of art and one of my favourite places to go photograph .. hope you enjoy these beautiful views of Portugals stunning countryside x
Golden light spills across the Aveiro lagoon as the sun sinks low over the Atlantic. The calm waters reflect hues of pink and amber, while herons, flamingos, and egrets drift gracefully across the shallows. Evening sea walks here are a quiet ritual — the air salty, the light soft, and the rhythm of nature unhurried. A peaceful moment where land, sea, and sky seem to breathe together.
The day fades into stillness as waves whisper against the shore. The horizon glows in soft gold and violet — a quiet space for reflection and calm. Captured during golden hour, this seascape reminds us that every ending can feel like a beginning.

A view of Alfonso Canciani's 'Lanciasassi' (stone-thrower). Cormons (GO), Italy. Michele Marcolin © 2022. K1ii + DFA24-70
Born in Brazzano, Gorizia, in 1863, Alfonso Canciani followed his artistic aspirations to seek luck in Vienna, even without schools, money and language skills, becoming a very prolific as well as much underrated sculptor in the beginning of the past century. Hired as ornatist for funeral monuments at the Academy in Wien, with his sketch for a monument to Dante he obtained few years later the Rome award and the highest recognition of the time in Austria, the Künstlerpreis.
He performed statues, portraits and monuments for the cathedral of St. Stephen, the University and for the Viennese aristocracy. He was among the first ordinary and only Friulian members of the secession, admired and supported by Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos, etc. WW1 interrupted his extraordinary career. Returning home at the age of fifty-six, he continued his artistic activity in Italy, but the cultural climate reduced his potential.
He worked on medals engraving, funerary monuments and busts-portraits. He taught in Trieste from 1920 until 1935 at the local industrial art school. His activity, however, remained so remarkable that in 1940 he received the award of the Italian Academy of Fine Arts. In particular, there are statues, small and large, inspired by the world of work, which he knew how to recreate with authenticity, identifying himself with the workers' spirit.
I acquired these scales recently, I'd been looking for some for a while and managed to strike a deal with the seller.
I had this idea but most of my backdrops are fairly small so more suited to flat lay so I feel it's a little cramped.
I've totally lost my confidence in my photography so I really wanted to crack on and do something with the scales. I left the dust on them to add to the authenticity.
Standing on the ridge, watching the wind roll through the valley, it feels like the world just keeps going — horizon after horizon, cloud after cloud. The turbines turn quietly in the distance, a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much more there is ahead.
This view is more than a landscape; it’s a moment of stillness that whispers possibility — of journeys not yet taken, and ideas still forming on the edge of the sky.
Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve - Boneyard Beach
Charleston County, Coastal South Carolina
Accessed via Botany Bay Road (dirt)
Date Taken: May 26, 2012
Flickr Explore #8 on Friday, June 8, 2012; thanks so much guys--that is incredible!
Situated within the southeastern boundary of the Ashepoo-Combahee-Edisto (ACE) basin, Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve is a spectacular natural resource within the lowcountry of South Carolina. A long-time visitor and fan of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the thing that most surprised me when stepping onto Botany Bay's Boneyard Beach is the sheer quantity and variety of shells that layer the sandy area of the beach. How can a place feel so wild and yet be so relatively close to populated areas like Charleston? The result of a forward-thiking coalition of individuals and groups including Ducks Unlimited, Colleton County, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and willing landowners and individuals, the ACE Basin Project has protected vast areas of wetland habitat through the use of conservation easements and outright purchases. This is particularly important for the lowcountry of South Carolina as studies quoted from 1996 show that visitors to the area that year spent nearly seven hundred and fifty million tourist dollars, with the most popular activities including going to the beach and hiking/hunting/fishing. As such, the ACE Basin Project seeks to further protect it's exceptional natural resources by capitalizing on a brand of tourism known as "Heritage Tourism," which concentrates on "authenticity, history, nature, and vanishing lifestyles," (SCDNR) all of which the low country posesses in spades.
Nothing happens in a vacuum--at least not in my little world. A big thanks to professional photographer, Dave Allen, who turned me onto this particular location and to my mother, who on this particular visit highlighted this very composition and allowed me to sit on the location until I achieved the desired wave action and exposure. I appreciate all of the opportunities, guys and always hope that the resulting photograph will excite and motivate us to get out and do it all again!
The Soul of the Land: A Journey Through Time and Tradition
This evocative collection captures a series of cinematic moments rooted in the rugged beauty of rural heritage and the timeless spirit of nature. The series explores the deep, silent connection between the land and its inhabitants, weaving a narrative of solitude, resilience, and ancestral tradition. From the weathered, soulful gaze of an elderly shepherd to the meticulous, scarred hands of a woodworker, each frame pays tribute to a life defined by authenticity and craft.
The journey traverses misty villages perched on jagged cliffs, ancient gnarled olive trees standing as silent witnesses to history, and the majestic flight of vultures over deep canyons. Whether it is the quiet comfort of a freshly baked loaf of bread in a sunlit kitchen or the melancholic beauty of a rainy street at dusk, these images invite the viewer to pause and reflect on the dignity of a vanishing world. A visual exploration of rustic simplicity, where every stone, texture, and ray of light tells a story of belonging and endurance.
