I think that AI image generation is similar in many ways to photography. The camera itself handles all the fine details, but the photographer is in charge of curating the types of images that will be created.
Ultimately, it is all about maximizing the probability that something good will be created.
This is very similar to AI image generation, in terms of the skills involved and what the human does vs. what the machine does.
You can't compare AI image generation to the process of actually making these images from scratch with 3D software or paint/pencils, where the human controls every detail.
However, I think the process really is very similar to that of photography, as I made the case for above. I think that DALL-E 3 is by far the most powerful AI image generation tool currently available.

For the prompt and the title I took the clue from an old analog drawing of mine. But I expanded the prompt with a description of another painting from the eighties, which included all kinds of sea creatures as uniform decorations.
The first image in this series was created with Contemporary Surreal. Much later I duplicated it , text only, for a challenge.
I liked the idea so much, I ran several different versions in different modes, some with text only, some with a seed image. The results were largely very interesting, so eventually I made a special collection for it. Award-winning photojournalist, Karim Ben Khelifa, is widely known for his coverage of the Middle East conflicts, especially the Iraq and Afghan wars, where he covered the insurgent sides. While a Fellow at the Open Documentary Lab at MIT, Ben Khelifa designed and prototyped his latest project The Enemy. This immersive installation uses VR to bring the audience into conversations between enemies within longstanding global conflicts. During his residency, he collaborated with Fox Harrell of the Imagination, Computation and Expression (ICE) Laboratory, to integrate concepts from cognitive science and Artificial Intelligence-based interaction models into the project to engender empathy.
