Lockdown this year gave me lots of time to revisit my frost and ice photography that gained me Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society some twenty years ago. I really enjoyed being out in the garden working with ice again and was very surprised to get the news that one of my new images ‘Yin and Yang’ has come second in the creative section of the Royal Horticultural Society International Photographic Competition.

When we came back from the USA we were required to do Covid-19 'quarantine'. However, in our case we were able to do ours in the sandbox scheme on the island of Phuket. We had to stay 14 days on the island during which time we were free to go where we wanted as long as we stayed on the island. As you can imagine with beaches like this it was a tremendous hardship

El yin y el yang (en chino, 阴阳; pinyin, yīnyáng; literalmente, ‘oscuro-brillante’) son dos conceptos del taoísmo, que son usados para representar o referirse a las dos fuerzas fundamentales opuestas y complementarias, pero interconectadas, que se encuentran en todas las cosas; y que esta filosofía atribuye a todo lo existente en el universo. Yin and yang (Chinese: 阴阳; pinyin: yīnyáng; literally: ‘dark-bright’) are two concepts from Taoism, which are used to represent or refer to the two fundamental opposing and complementary, but interconnected, forces that are found in all things; and which this philosophy attributes to everything existing in the universe. Yin is the feminine principle, the earth, darkness, passivity and absorption. Yang is the masculine principle, the sky, light, activity and penetration.

On my previous trip to this spot 2 years ago, the water flow was lower meaning that half splash pool was white and half was black giving it its yin yang appearance. Today, the higher flow meant lots of foam and the whole pool frothed up. I still like this little pool but wonder if one day I should bring a blow vac to the scene!
