For those who may not know it, Mr. Cook hails from Alabama, and is a graduate of Auburn University.
The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations held a hearing, “Offshore Profit Shifting and the U.S. Tax Code - Part 2 (Apple Inc.)” on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 106 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building, in which Mr. Cook testified.
I had the opportunity to view his and others' testimony, which is available online, and may be viewed here: www.hsgac.senate.gov/subcommittees/investigations/hearing...
I thought he did an excellent job of testifying and answered all the questions put to him respectfully, honestly and in a pleasant manner. He was a perfect gentleman in every respect.
Regarding the rationale for his appearance, it has been learned that Apple - the world's most fiscally valuable company - which is cash flush and wholly debt-free - legally avoided paying income taxes on a significant sum. They did not, however, do so by hook or by crook, and as Mr. Cook testified, "Apple complies fully with both the laws and spirit of the laws. And Apple pays all its required taxes, both in this country and abroad."
"Apple does not use tax gimmicks. Apple does not move its intellectual property into offshore tax havens and use it to sell products back into the US in order to avoid US tax; it does not use revolving loans from foreign subsidiaries to fund its domestic operations; it does not hold money on a Caribbean island; and it does not have a bank account in the Cayman Islands. Apple has substantial foreign cash because it sells the majority of its products outside the US. International operations accounted for 61% of Apple’s revenue last year and two-thirds of its revenue last quarter. These foreign earnings are taxed in the jurisdiction where they are earned."
In November 2008, Adam Lashinsky, Senior Writer for Fortune Magazine wrote of Mr. Cook's expertise that "Think of Cook's contribution like this. There are two basic ways to get great profit margins: Charge high prices or reduce costs. Apple does both. The marketing and design drive consumers wild with desire and make them willing to pay a premium; Cook's operational savvy keeps costs under control. Thus Apple is a cash-generating machine. Cook has called the company a place that is "entrepreneurial in its nature but with the mother of all balance sheets." At last count that meant $24.5 billion in cash and no debt."
Jon Stewart, host of the late-night teevee program "The Daily Show" opined in typically sarcastic (though honest) manner saying, "Corporations are the only reason the tax code is so complicated in the first place! Those off-shore loopholes didn't get carved out by poor people. Our tax code is purposefully complex... so that corporations with resources are the only ones who can find the buried goodies their own lobbyists have hidden in the labyrinth."
The matter of taxation will, I predict, become increasingly important in the days and years ahead.
Philosophically speaking, however, I ask this question: How many pairs of pants can a man wear, and in how many beds can he sleep at once? If there is a purpose for everything under Heaven, then what is the purpose of wealth?
And in the spirit of full disclosure, I own several Apple Computer products. In fact, it's the only brand of computer I've ever owned.

Aluminium iMac 2008 revision "Penryn"
24" 2.8Ghz 2GB RAM 500GB HDD

I added an extra 2GB of RAM so I now have a maximum of 4GB. I've only noticed minor performance improvements in a couple of programs and in a few areas of general computing. I'm left somewhat disappointed in the minimal speed bump.
EDIT: 20-09-2012
The 500GB WD HDD died so I had it replaced with a brand new Seagate 1TB HDD.
EDIT: February 2013
Added an extra 2GB of RAM for a combined 6GB.
EDIT: March 2016
Replaced the 1TB HDD for a 240GB SSD. Revised specs are now thus:
"Early 2008" iMac 24" 2.8GHz 6GB RAM 240GB SSD
UPDATE 2022:
Still using it. A few years back I upgraded the CPU to 3.06GHz, which was salvaged from Apple's top-of-the-line iMac from their 2008 range. The difference in performance is un-appreciable.
UPDATE July 2024:
It finally died in November or December 2022. I suspect the PSU failed. It's just a matter of replacing said part but there's no point. It's been a great computer that served as my daily driver for 14 years. I'm on PC now (reluctantly) and it's alright, but I miss using a Mac. Hopefully I will get one soon.
