Steve Smith celebrates passing 200* at Old Trafford. The Aussie batsman scored 211 and 82 in the game and proved to be the difference between the two sides.
During Australia's 1st innings Smith became the highest scorer in test cricket in calendar year 2019. Not bad when you consider that it was only his 3rd test of the year, having given every other batsman a 7 month start! By the end of the game he'd scored 671 runs at an average of 134.

Australia just closed the cricket Ashes series against England 4-0, continuing the recent trend of home sides thrashing opposition. England's Stuart Broad here fends off a Patrick Cummins bumper with his glove, and is caught behind by wicketkeeper Tim Paine.
In this series Australia ruled supreme and England didn't really seem up to the challenge, although they had the better of the play at moments in a couple of early tests. Steven Smith scored 687 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 137, and Australia's top four bowlers each took 20 wickets. England captain Joe Root had a respectable series with 378 runs and a 47 average and James Anderson took 17 wickets at 27, but England largely failed to be competitive with both bat and ball despite most tests going five days. England were not helped by Stuart Broad having a poor series (only 11 wickets at 47) and Moeen Ali (just 5 wickets at 115).
The stands are a bit depleted because this was day 5, and Test matches usually don't go this distance. I think about 17,000 people turned up to make a 'gold coin' donation (either $1 or $2) to enter, which sure beats $179 for a platinum seat on the sold out days 1-3 and the mostly sold out day 4.
At the start of Australia's 2nd innings it didn't take long for Stuart Broad to nail the hapless David Warner LBW. Just 6 balls this time.
Stuart Broad trying here as the Aussie batsman approached his 200. England spinner Jack Leach 'dismissed' him when he was 118 only to be 'no-balled' for overstepping. Smith watched that replay on the big screen then almost sprinted back to the crease when his dismissal was overturned.
Stuart Broad's 5 wickets (even if he 'scored a century' with 5-101) in the first innings of the Sydney Test match proved a point, that he should have been picked for the first Test in Brisbane when it would have made a difference.
Actually, selections aside England's fast bowling (that is, Anderson, Broad, Robinson and Wood when they played) has held up, just nowhere near as penetrative as Australia's. Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith have been relatively quiet this series. But England haven't scored 300 in an innings yet (185 and 68 like in the third Test won't cut it).
I think a fair chunk of blame has to lie with the priorities of their Board, which has focused on short-form commercialisation not Test match competitiveness. There is a one-day cup to show for it, but only Joe Root scored Test runs for England in 2021. Next on the runs ladder was Rory Burns (dismissed first ball of the series to Starc and dropped), and then extras (!)
Which has led to the usual run of jokes, e.g.
Q. What is the difference between Cinderella and an England batter?
A. Cinderella knew when to leave the ball.
Q. What's the difference between the England cricket team and a funeral director?
A. A funeral director isn't going to lose the ashes.

A galaxy of sporting greats in the Royal Box - Middle Saturday at Centre Court
On the middle Saturday of the Championships, the Chairman of the All England Club, Philip Brook, traditionally invites guests from the world of sport to the Royal Box - introduced by Sue Barker.
"Opening the batting for our sporting guests are five stars of cricket...
A player who captained England in more than 200 internationals, breaking countless records and putting women’s cricket on the map: Charlotte Edwards.
The current New Zealand skipper who was named Woman Cricketer of the Year for 2015: Suzie Bates.
Two bowlers who have led England’s attack over the last decade, and who have both topped the world Test rankings this year: Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.
And a batsman who made more than 8,000 Test runs in his playing career, and is now renowned as a straight-talking commentator: Geoffrey Boycott." [Sue Barker]
