SW12 16 scoots by as Chicago-Laurel patiently waits for cars to be cut from the rear of the train.

A BN transfer job along the Duluth waterfront heads to Superior behind a GP10 and an SW12. They are former Great Northern and Northern Pacific units respectively. Soaring over top is the approaches to the two remaining DM&IR ore docks.

One of these trains is a bit out of place. The inbound 3-car BN Dinky is being shoved up to Chicago Union Station by the 9925--nothing wrong with that train, but the Milwaukee Road 600 has business car #1, the "Mount Rainer" heading for the Amtrak yard. I think that the business car was going to head for the Twin Cities on the tail of the Empire Builder later that afternoon. So the orange SW12 likely came down out of Western Ave and ran through the depot as it was making a rare appearance on the south side of Chicago Union Station. August 20, 1981.

A Burlington Northern freight heads west through the scenic Badlands of North Dakota at Sully Springs on the afternoon of June 29, 1994. Leading the train is a former Southern Railway GP30 rebuilt by EMD for BN to GP39-2 standards and labeled a GP39E, No. 2759. Trailing is one of BN’s unique GE B30-7A B-units, No. 4049. Also in the consist is a former Northern Pacific SW12 No. 224 on home turf and traveling to Glendive, Montana, for some maintenance work, and finally, two GE C30-7s.

SW12 3503 shoves a long string of grain loads into the CHS elevator at Superior on Oct. 30, 2008. Back in 2008, the 3503 still looks pretty good even though it was built for the CB&Q way back in 1955.

Not as many switchers call the Twin Ports home these days. I haven't seen a SW12 in quite sometime. There is a pair of MP15s that still work on the Duluth side, but that is about it.

You never knew what kind of consist would show up along the early BNSF, especially on the Wayzata Sub. BNSF GP60M 106 leads TFM/HLCX 1508, a BN SD40-2, and a SW12 on a MKCKNTWN in Minneapolis back on Aug. 24, 1999.

This eastbound on the Wayzata Sub. is leaving Nicollet Island, with what I believe is the ex-Chicago Great Western curving towards Boom Island. No matter the geography, the BN/BNSF always referred to the area as Boom Island when changing crews at the crossings behind the power.

On January 5, 1977 Dad shot Southern Pacific SW1200 2278 working the commuter yard in San Francisco, California.

Two SW12's are seen parked at the shops in late afternoon summer sun. The 1244 is up for sale and the 1237 may follow along soon.

Seen through the trees, two OSR SW1200's peddle a wayfreight westbound towards Putnam along the St. Thomas Subdivision on a grey and blustery November morning.

A Metra commuter train has just departed Chicago Union Station and is passing Metra EMD SW1200 No. 3 moving two newly-acquired EMD F59PHI locomotives (METX Nos. 73 and 77) on the lead to the north end of Metra’s coach yard on November 8, 2018. In the background, an Amtrak long-distance train backs out the the dark confines of CUS and is ultimately heading for Amtrak’s coach yard.

A couple BN switchers work one of the elevator alleys in Superior, WI. After an overnight stop on the way home from a trip up the "taconite trail" things had started to cloud over but it's hard to leave Superior without checking in on the action first. October 11, 1998.
