Genus/species: Python reticulatus (Pythonidae)

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: Normally colored reticulated pythons have several pigments: melanin (blacks), and xanthins (yellows) amongst other more subtle colors. Lemondrop is a “lavender albino” which is the same thing as a “tyrosinase positive albino” (t-positive) which have the inability to complete the synthesis of melanin but can produce other melanin related pigments such as various shades of brown grey and red resulting the “lavender” color. A “normal albino” (t-negative) reticulated python is yellow and white with pink/red eyes. Melanin and other melanin pigments areas are pure white but non-melanin pigments are present giving alternate colors (xanthines produce yellows). To make matters more complicated different albino snakes may have mutations giving them additional color morphs.

Our albino American Alligator, (Claude) Alligator mississippiensis is a “normal albino” (t-negative) with no melanin or non-melanin pigments making him pure white. If you google “t-positive albino” or “tyrosinase positive albino” you can find a lot more information on this condition.

I didn't expect the python to have a blue tongue.

This python was minding its own business, coiled up in the water below, when our local creature spotter (in green) took a hefty stick and lifted it out, the better for us to see. He put it down on the bank of the stream, but this seemed the better action shot.

Ever watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail? I saw a knitted bacalava with teeth and the bunny flashed into my head. Mother of pearl button eyes, needlefelted nose. Yarn is Brown Sheep from my friend SweetieWray's shop (find her on facebook!) Sorry about the string, I dropped my yarn needle on the floor and couldn't find it to hide that last strand of yarn!

This is "Julius Squeezer" - Burmese Python

Julius is quite large, about 12 feet long and 65 pounds, according to his handlers. It takes three people to carry him safely. He is an animal ambassador at the SDZ Safari Park.

The Burmese python is one of the five largest snakes in the world, native to a large variation of tropic and sub-tropic areas of Southern- and Southeast Asia.

They are often found near water and are sometimes semi-aquatic, but can also be found in trees. They are also excellent swimmers, being able to stay submerged for up to half an hour.

Burmese pythons are carnivorous. Their diet consists primarily of appropriately sized birds, mammals

and vermin. IUCN has recently listed the Burmese python as "Vulnerable". Wikipedia

One of the invasive species of snake in Florida, this originates in south and southeast Asia.

Apparently Florida has a problem with Burmese Pythons as owners release them into the wild, as well as escaping following Hurricane Andrew.
