A red-eared slider, an introduced turtle species, swims in the Anacostia River near Kingman Island in Washington, D.C., on May 1, 2024. Kingman and Heritage islands were created in 1903 using dredge spoils from the Anacostia River, which had filled in with eroded sediment from centuries of development beginning in the 1700s. After a seawall was constructed on both sides of the Anacostia in the early 1900s, the river had lost about 90% of its wetlands. But efforts in recent years have brought some wetlands back to the river, including at Kingman Lake. (Photo by Will Parson/Chesapeake Bay Program)

On August 22, Deloitte hosted the Empower Program’s third cohort for a half-day workshop. The afternoon began with insightful discussions led by Deloitte leaders: Jessica Kim (Partner in AI Risk Management, Governance and Strategy), Jun Hyuk Yoo (Partner – ESG & Climate Change), Vandi Hong (HR Senior Manager), and Jee Yeon Seo (Executive Director for Brand & Communications). These leaders shared their unique perspectives on empowerment, blending personal experiences with strategic approaches to leadership and organisational growth.
Following the discussion, cohort members took part in an interactive Q&A session where they could ask questions and engage in open conversations. Afterwards, the cohort was split into smaller groups for coaching and mentoring with Deloitte’s leaders. The small group format allowed time for problem-solving, career advice, and deeper discussion on career development.
The latter half of the workshop was designed to be highly interactive, fostering team spirit and building trust. Cohort members were challenged to use their listening skills to understand the true meaning and intent of the speaker and to focus on what is most important in conversations. These exercises highlighted why active listening is essential for effective communication.
The activities encouraged teamwork, strengthened mutual understanding, and gave members the opportunity to practice problem-solving together. By working through these challenges, everyone left the workshop feeling more connected and with a stronger sense of team spirit.
We extend our gratitude to Nicola Weir (Deloitte Internal Sustainability & Climate Leader & BCCK Vice Chair) and to Deloitte for hosting such an impactful workshop. Our thanks also go to the Empower members for their enthusiastic participation and commitment to the programme.

United States Merchant Marine Academy Hosts EMBARC Quarterly Meeting at Kings Point
KINGS POINT, NEW YORK, September 19, 2024 – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York, hosted the eighth EMBARC (Every Mariner Builds A Respectful Culture) Quarterly Meeting. The event gathered leaders from the maritime industry, government officials, and academy faculty and staff to discuss updates and progress in the industry, specifically focusing on improving safety standards for cadet-midshipmen at sea.
The meeting began with welcoming remarks from Capt. Todd Kutkiewicz, the Director of the Office of Cadet At-Sea Training. He expressed his appreciation to the faculty, staff, and maritime industry leaders in attendance, acknowledging the importance of the EMBARC initiative in fostering a closer relationship between commercial and military vessel operators.
Following the introduction, Capt. Kutkiewicz introduced a distinguished panel of speakers, which included prominent figures in the maritime world. Among the speakers were Vice Adm. Joanna M. Nunan, Superintendent of USMMA, and Rear Adm. Ann C. Phillips, U.S. Navy (Ret.), the U.S. Maritime Administrator. The panel, moderated by Dr. Shashi Kumar, PhD, Deputy Associate Administrator and National Coordinator for Maritime Education and Training, covered several key issues impacting the maritime industry.
Vice Admiral Joanna Nunan, Superintendent of the USMMA, and Rear Admiral Ann Phillips (Ret.), U.S. Maritime Administrator, welcomed the attendees. Vice Admiral Nunan emphasized the significant progress made since the program's inception, recalling how initial skepticism had evolved into widespread acceptance and support. "Now, a year and a half later, we're really excited that you're here. The legislation and everyone's work have undoubtedly improved safety at sea for our midshipmen," Nunan said. She highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of respect and professionalism for future mariners.
Admiral Phillips echoed this sentiment, stressing the ongoing nature of the EMBARC program’s mission. "This is a journey that you start and never finish. You improve things continuously, and we are grateful for your continued support," she said. Phillips also recognized the growing participation in the EMBARC program. 22 commercial carriers are now enrolled, including those not mandated by law.
The meeting, held at the scenic Yocum Sailing Center, offered an ideal setting for industry leaders to collaborate and discuss how to ensure that merchant mariners are trained in environments that prioritize safety and respect. The gathering also underscored the U.S. Maritime Administration’s (MARAD) commitment to making meaningful changes in the industry, driven by the EMBARC program and the legislation that supports it.
The event wrapped up with further discussions on advancements in maritime training and safety protocols, leaving attendees optimistic about the future of the U.S. maritime industry. With its continued focus on partnerships and professional development, EMBARC stands as a vital initiative for fostering growth and collaboration in the maritime sector.
