Each year EOP Transitional Programs offers a summer experience to help students bridge the time between high school and university. The program's goals are to give students a head start toward a successful college experience and the opportunity to begin building a strong community.
I am an Organizer for Johns Hopkins Tutorial Project, an on-campus tutoring program that allows student tutors to work with elementary school children in the Baltimore area. This photo was taken during our Halloween party for the kids. Every year, the Organizers wear costumes of a certain theme, so this year we decided to be characters from Spongebob. While the tutors and tutees that we oversee were enjoying the festivities, my fellow Organizers and I decided to hide and chat among ourselves to recover from the hectic and rainy trick-or-treat session. The Program’s director, Young, practically acts like our mother and has a personality that ranges from yelling at us for trivial reasons to telling inappropriate jokes that no mother should be telling. She came into this room to jokingly yell at us for not helping out, but none of us could take her seriously as seen by a few of the Organizers smiling. I enjoyed the fact that one of the Organizers—our class clown—is fashioning a serious side eye, yet he is wearing a plankton costume that takes away from any toughness he is trying to evoke.

Annenberg Center Live
On Thursday evening, October 29th, in partnership with the Theatre Arts Program’s fall production of Bury the Dead, a war play by Irwin Shaw directed by Dr. James F. Schlatter, members of the University of Pennsylvania Student Veterans Association (UPSVA) and Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) attended a rehearsal of the play. Following a discussion with the cast, Warrior Writers of Philadelphia conducted a writing and art-making workshop with the veterans that focused on some of the issues raised in the production. In particular, they wrote and created art on the subject of “thoughts of home,” which is central to the action of the play and to veterans’ experience during deployment. Some of the work created will be displayed in the lobby of the Bruce Montgomery Theater, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, during the run of the production, November 18-21 at 7:00.

The Ford Case Competition (FCC), student-organized and run by the Ford Case Collective, is a 10-day consulting project in which teams of graduate public policy students compete against one another. Through the competition, students create implementable solutions to real-world policy problems facing a local government or nonprofit organization in Michigan. This year, the program’s first, sought to address ongoing parking concerns in the City of East Lansing, MI. On Friday, March 21, 2014, the final three teams presented their proposals to city administrators and a panel of Ford School faculty experts at the Joan and Sanford Weill Hall.
