We drove 3 oldtimer Landrovers from Belgium into the Catalan Pyrenees and back. Off-road, off-grid and with a minimal ecological footprint. Nobody would find traces of us sleeping next to a ravine or in a forest.

Living off the Grid: - Advantages of Solar Power
i. The energy that originates from simply one hour of sun suffices to supply energy for a year for the whole world
ii. A battery can be used to store off grid solar power for evenings and cloudy days
iii. Solar panels on a roof work when the sun's rays strike the cells in the panel and electrons are released, producing energy
iv. Using solar power will typically provide a saving of $100+ each month on utility costs for the property owners of off grid homes .
Living off the Grid: - Advantages of Wind Energy
i. When wind goes through the blades of a turbine that is connected to a generator, the energy produced by the spin is converted into electrical energy
ii. A single large wind turbine can provide electricity for around 500 off grid homes
iii. Last year, 42 % of the houses that were geared up with a source of off grid power used wind
iv. Unlike most other sources of energy, wind utilizes hardly any water; not only is wind energy carbon neutral, it helps water conservation also
v. There is around 10 times the amount of wind available in the U.S. than is needed to supply power for the whole country
vi. Wind energy is presently the fastest-growing source of renewable energy: - Around two wind farms are set up weekly in the U.S.
For living off the grid, the facts indicate that the advantages of solar power combined with the advantages of wind energy now exceed any advantages that fossil fuels may have had. However it is probably down to individuals to begin the shift to a larger scale adoption, so that we may all enjoy living off the grid.

: The Linfoots moved to Craik after visited their daughter at the Eco-Centre in Craik and learning of the lots that were available for $1 to build in the Eco-Village. The couple set out to build a straw bale home in their seventies, but found the bales heavy to work with so they changed course and built their home of our insulated concrete forms. Sheila Hicks: Off Grid exhibition at the Hepworth Wakefield 7 April-25 September 2022.

Sheila Hicks (b. Nebraska, USA 1934) is one of the world's foremost artists investigating colour, form and texture.
Drawing together over 70 works from international public and private collections, this major exhibition explores the many facets of Hicks’ ground-breaking work. They range from intimate minimes – small woven explorations that Hicks continually creates on a hand-held frame – to large-scale installations that fill spaces with voluminous form and vibrant colour. The exhibition spans Hicks’ career from her earliest works made in the 1950s to new site-specific commissions.
Off Grid reveals how Hicks’ extensive travels across several continents, where she immersed herself in local communities and studied vernacular textile traditions by observing and collaborating with local artists and artisans, together with her own experimentation and natural curiosity, inspired her to develop an unique artistic language. On display are little-known photographs and journals offering insights into the extraordinary range of cultural and aesthetic influences that have inspired her work.
Prestigious collaborations and commissions have enabled Hicks to collapse the boundaries between art, architecture and design. These have included commissions for the Ford Foundation headquarters in New York, King Saud University in Riyadh and the Cultural Centre of Fuji City in Japan as well as projects with IBM, CBS, Air France, Rothschild Bank, Bridgestone, Artek and Georg Jensen, several of which are examined in the exhibition.
For The Hepworth Wakefield, Hicks has created major new installations that respond to David Chipperfield’s architecture and the new Tom Stuart-Smith garden, where there is a specially-commissioned monumental sculpture of weather-resistant fibres.
M-KOPA CEO and Co-founder Jesse Moore participated as a panelist in the first session of IOREC 2016, which discussed solutions to integrate off-grid technologies in electrification strategies.

builders of strawbale homes usually put in a "truth window" somewhere. this is a little peak into the walls. for hers, marilyn used an old chalkboard from her childhood. this was one of my favorite parts of the whole house.
