KEDW (Edwards Air Force Base) - 29 MAY 2012

On display at Century Circle near the West Gate at Edwards Air Force Base.

The first XF-104 made its initial flight here at Edwards AFB in February 1954. In May 1958, a YF-104A set a world speed record of 1,404.19 mph over Edwards AFB, and in December 1959, an F-104C set a world altitude record of 103.395 ft here. The Starfighter was the first aircraft to hold simultaneous official world records for speed, altitude, and time-to-climb, most of which were established at Edwards AFB. The USAF procured about 300 Starfighters in one- and two-seat versions and another 1700 were sold to foreign countries.

This Starfighter had a very interesting flight test career. It was loaned to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center shortly after being delivered to the USAF in 1957. In 1959 it was bailed to Lockheed and was fitted with a G-model tail for nuclear weapons shape trials. It was also used as a chase plane on the first flight of the Lockheed SR-71A in 1964 and later flew with a U-2 nose installed to support AIM-7 missile tests for the F-104S. It returned to NASA service in 1966 and flew test missions at Dryden until 1977. It was transferred to the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) Museum in 1985 and restored by the 412th Test Wing Services team in 2006.

A North Korean mid-range ballistic missile apparently failed shortly after launch Saturday, South Korea and the United States said, the third test-fire flop just this month but a clear message of defiance as a U.S. supercarrier conducts drills in nearby waters.

North Korean ballistic missile tests are banned by the United Nations because they're seen as part of the North's push for a nuclear-tipped missile that can hit the U.S. mainland. The latest test came as U.S. officials pivoted from a hard line to diplomacy at the U.N. in an effort to address what may be Washington's most pressing foreign policy challenge.

Green River Launch Complex 3 is 3500 acre military complex in Utah used as a test facility for Athena and Pershing missile programs. The complex was part of the White Sands Missile Range and was active from the mid 1960's until 1979.

“G.E. engineers conducting a typical guided missile test firing at the Army’s Proving Ground, White Sands, New Mexico.” [Image caption]

“General Electric engineers and scientists are helping your Armed Forces to develop rocket leadership.

“Designing and testing such missiles is unbelievably complex. New metals for better rocket motors and better fuels for those motors are being perfected. Super-accurate instruments to steer the missile in flight are being designed. Miles of film must record all the test firings. These are jobs in which industry can, and does provide much help. G.E., for example, has been test firing rocket motors since 1945. . .

“In a short space of time, engineers have sent rockets to previously unattainable heights. Rockets in this country have flown to a height of 250 miles at a speed of over 5,000 miles per hour. . .” [From the ad copy]

PACIFIC OCEAN (Oct. 28, 2009) - A Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) is launched from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer JS Myoko (DDG 175) in a joint missile defense intercept test with the Missile Defense Agency in the Pacific Ocean. The SM-3 successfully intercepted a medium-range target that had been launched minutes earlier from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. Myoko's crew detected and tracked the target, developed a fire control solution, then launched the SM-3. (U.S. Navy photo Courtesy of the Missile Defense Agency)

A US Air Force veteran I once worked with had experience servicing F-100s in the late 1960s. According to him, inadvertent actuation of the ram air intake could seriously injure an airman working inside the intake duct of an F-100.

Historic Marker on NC-50 - Missile Tests

Due to the North Korea's Nuclear missile test and launch, there is a concentrated attention on Korean Pennisula. This event creates big tensions throughout the international society. I personally wish that a resolution regarding to North Korean missile test peacefully solved. I took the photo in the backgroud of peaceful and warm environment.

North Korea has fired several unidentified short range missile. All the tests were done from the Eastern Coast. This information was given by South Korean officials. After the test, the missiles went from 70 to 200 kilometers.

A MEADS launcher sits ready while a second fires a missile in the background. The MEADS system is intended for use by several different countries and its systems have been developed to allow it to be used on each country's vehicles.

Signs on this missile test base are all bilingual: Russian and English. Soviet START inspectors were allowed on base to inspect and monitor US actions in relation to treaties governing weapons between the two countries.

Patriotism is rad. And explosive.

All that is left of the cooling towers that were used to test the Blue Streak missile.

Cute antiquated technology. Meanwhile my 3.0ghz quad core could probably put a cruise missile up someone's ass if given a chance to do so.

This was either a missile test or a satellite launch. Either way, it whizzed by in the distance from behind the stage off to the left (if facing the stage) as the concert was going on and was pretty cool.

North Korea’s latest missile launch appears to put U.S. capital in range

North Korea claimed the entire United States mainland was within reach after “successfully” testing a new kind of intercontinental ballistic missile, which it called the Hwasong-15, and said could carry a “super large heavy ...

This was the trail left by the missile test/satellite launch/whatever-it-was in the distance during the Radiohead concert.

Thank god spelling isn't a requirement for military base personnel.
