The four-member PIC24FJ256GB210 microcontroller family integrates USB for Embedded Host/Peripheral/On-the-Go and 96 Kbytes of RAM. The MPLAB C Compiler for PIC32 is a full-featured ANSI compliant C compiler for Microchip's PIC32 family of 32-bit microcontrollers. The 8 pins PIC12F683 microcontroller is one of the smallest members of the Microchip 8-bit microcontroller families but equipped with powerful peripherals such as ADC and PWM capabilities. This make this tiny microcontroller is suitable for controlling the DC motor speed. In order to demonstrate the PIC12F683 capabilities and to make this tutorial more attractive, I decided to use the PIC12F683 microcontroller to generate simple and yet fascinating laser light show from a cheap keychain laser pointer. Change of plan: I decided to use female connectors for the I/O ports instead of pins. The Molex KK connectors are nice and simple, but I had another look at the Arduino and realised that sockets would make more sense. This way, I can wire up a LED to a couple of header pins and plug it in -- at a pinch, I can just plug wires in directly. In this photo, I've soldered the main chip socket, the crystal parts, the decoupling capacitors, the programming socket and the reset button.

The chipKIT™ Pro MX4 is a microcontroller development board based on the Microchip® PIC32MX460F512L, a member of the 32-bit PIC32 microcontroller family. It is compatible with Digilent's line of Pmods, and is suitable for use with the Microchip MPLAB® IDE tools. The chipKIT Pro MX4 is also compatible for use with the chipKIT MPIDE development environment.

The MRF24J40MB is Microchip’s second 2.4 GHz Radio Frequency (RF), surface-mountable transceiver module. This new module adds +20 decibels per milliwatt (dBm) of transmit power via an integrated Power Amplifier (PA) and -102 dBm of receive sensitivity via the integrated Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) to the proven IEEE 802.15.4 compliant transceiver, PCB antenna and discrete matching circuitry. More transmit power allows designers to expand the range of their IEEE 802.15.4-based ZigBee or proprietary-protocol wireless networks.

This is how I'm programming the AVR microcontrollers. I made a little carrier board to hold the standard 6 way socket which connects to the Adafruit USBtiny ISP. My breadboard power supply provides power for the micrcontroller and the whole lot is connected with breadboard wires. The LEDs on this board are for testing the software I'm currently working on. A short time ago the NRM had the Great Gathering and had six of Sir Nigel Gresley's A4 locomotives (including Mallard, which still has the steam locomotive speed record) all in one place. Two have now left but four still remain.
Part of my final project for "Electron Wrangling for Beginners" class at Machine Project gallery in Echo Park.
My project involved building an optical tape reader out of legos. I mounted an LED and a photo-resistor inside a lego brick (using a Dremel tool and hot glue). Then a built
a black chamber around this sensor, so that the light levels could be controlled.
A paper tape with color bars is fed thru the chamber, using lego "capstans". This produced 10 reliable light levels on the photo resister. After finding that the resister was returning values on a logarithmic curve, I modified the printed color bars so that it would return linear values.

An Atmel ATtiny24 microcontroller drives an R/C servo wich in turn rotates a line LASER taken from a LASER level.
The microcontroller runs a software real time clock and turns the servo and the line LASER to mimic the shadow cast from the style of a sundial as the time goes.

Microchip's low-cost ENC624J600 standalone, IEEE 802.3™ compliant, 100 Mbps Ethernet interface controllers. These Ethernet controllers combine a 10/100Base-TX physical interface (PHY) and a Media Access Controller (MAC) with a hardware cryptographic security engine, and can connect to any PIC® microcontroller via an industry-standard Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or a flexible parallel interface.
