The Arctic Fox II took on water and was lost at sea off Cape Flattery early in the morning of Tuesday August 11th. There were three crew on board. Two were lost and one was rescued. I've had the privilege of photographing this vessel many times over the years at both Cowichan Bay and Fisherman's Wharf. My last encounter with her was July 28th at Cow Bay, when I took this photo and spent quite a bit of time watching the skipper and a crewman getting her ready to go to sea. Today's news was so surreal and sad. Condolences to the families.

A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions typically hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and keystone predator, although they scavenge when opportunities occur.
Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats, but when persecuted it adapts to being active at night and at twilight.
It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. – Wikipedia

Thank you very much for all your kind messages and comments on my last photo. We are safe and sound. The hurricane passed a little bit farther, so it was only a lot of rain and puddles, but no wind, at least here.
Sadly, there were destruction on the coast of the beautiful Riviera Maya. Now, Delta is approaching the coast of the Louisiana, Hope no human losses are given there.

The Catha plant (Khat or qat (Catha edulis, Arabic: القات ) is a flowering shrub reaching full size in seven or eight years. Its crop – the new shoots and leaves – can be harvested four times a year, making it financially attractive for the farmer. It is easy to grow but requires ample irrigation to produce fresh and moist, young green leaves. It is native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, a stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite, and euphoria. Especially the young leaves and stems are chewed, not eaten. Among communities from the areas where the plant is native, qat chewing has a history as a social custom dating back thousands of years.
Especially in Yemen and Somalia qat is widely consumed and often considered as a burden for the economies of those countries.
For example, in Yemen it is estimated that 40% of the country's water supply goes toward the irrigation of khat.

Felici, my "little Maumau", died last Wednesday - this is one of the last pictures I took of her. She was suffering from a severe kidney disease for a long time but with the help of a special medicine and a daily infusion with a physiological salt solution (my veterinarian taught me how to do that) she could lead a quite normal cat life together with her brother Fellini. But all of a sudden she stopped eating about 10 days ago and then her condition got worse and worse very quickly. On her last day she even stopped drinking water and almost couldn't walk.
My sister came up from Vienna and we both accompanied her on her last way, cuddling and caressing her until the vet told us, that her heart had stopped beating.
I've never been a "pet-person" but as my sister got her and Fellini almost 11 years ago, I somehow adopted them immediately. - So, losing her means a real loss to me, although I'm sure we did the right thing.
I'll get her ashes soon and I'll find some places in nature where I will spread it to make her part of the wilderness she never had as a home cat - that's the most comforting thought for me.

Now isolated in a field, a once busy barn site is surrounded by the lifelessness of a springtime crop field. But unlike the field, the barn, silo and small crib have lost their original purpose and will not regain it. After retiring from our life's work one of the more damaging consequences is to mourn the loss of our purpose and not work to establish another for the rest of our days.

The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. The leopard occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation and are declining in large parts of the global range.
Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. Leopards are hunted illegally, and their body parts are smuggled in the wildlife trade for medicinal practices and decoration.
Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively short legs and a long body with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, but generally has a smaller, lighter physique. Its fur is marked with rosettes similar to those of the jaguar, but the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed, and do not usually have central spots as the jaguar's do. Both leopards and jaguars that are melanistic are known as black panthers.
The leopard is distinguished by its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet, and strength (which it uses to move heavy carcasses into trees), as well as its ability to adapt to various habitats ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and montane areas, and its ability to run at speeds of up to 58 kilometres per hour (36 mph). – Wikipedia

Note to Self: Your life and your whole self faced a lot of loss—in countless areas—when the choices, actions and lack of actions of others trampled your hope and your life. Like the moments with this lifeless butterfly you found lying in your yard, saw beauty and meaning in, spent time with and carefully held in your hand, you are holding your own loss, working—at a pace that is appropriate for you—to face the truth of your brutal reality, cope, learn, grow, experience some level of healing and your own form of rebirth and transformation throughout this intense, challenging, brutal, meaningful, important, healing process. It often feels intolerable, impossible, too painful and unbearable and it is very brave, courageous and life-giving to work at holding your loss in healthy, healing ways.

I found this beautiful, lifeless butterfly lying in our yard—it was probably hit by a vehicle as it drove down the road past our house. It was incredibly meaningful for me—beyond what I could explain with words—to spend some time with this butterfly and to capture its beauty. I took this image 5 years ago and still remember these moments and their meaning.

This small falcon is one of the UK’s most familiar and widely-distributed birds of prey, absent only from Shetland, parts of north-west Scotland and central Wales.
Kestrels prefer grassland habitats over which they can hunt for small mammals and small birds. A cavity nester, the species will also use suitable nest boxes, a behaviour that has enabled detailed study of their breeding ecology.
While still widely distributed, annual monitoring data has highlighted a decline in Kestrel numbers, the causes of which remain unclear. In some areas predation by Goshawks has been linked to the loss of local breeding pairs. (BTO).

During the pandemic, some businesses have lost a lot, some had to close down, others have profited, and some again profited fantastically ("We're in the money ..."). And all of this was neither their fault nor their brilliant strategy, it was the Virus. In a democratic society based on consensus, one would expect that some kind of mechanism can be found of sharing loss and profit.
She rises from the still water carrying both life and loss. In the Abbott Marshlands, every dawn is written in quiet exchanges, where nothing is wasted and every creature belongs to the same enduring story.
De hele week al waren er nachtelijke werken in Mechelen 'uitgraven vuile ballast van de uitgebroken sporen 9 en 10. Iedere nacht werd er teruggereden naar Antwerpen noord bundel B-2 zuid om de vuile ballast uit de wagens te lossen en naar de zift machine te verwerken.
We zien hier de 2 laatste oude dames van de reeks 55 die nog in dienst zijn! De foto werd kops gemaakt met reden de vieze alternatieve kleuren een beetje te verdoezelen...

The sky was heavily overcast, and this pic is taken through a *really* dirty window, which resulted in further loss of light. Hence the dramatic effect :-)

"This show is dedicated to my good friend Amona Savira, who left us earlier this year quite unexpectedly. Her passing was an absolute shock to me but sadly it was just one of a few losses I suffered this year. When Kate asked me to fill in this show slot that had been intended for Amona, I was happy to try and do it justice, even though other pressures didn't seem to want me to complete it. I think what I experienced this year with all the events in my life, is that regardless of how tragic and harsh things can be, you cannot let things consume you and paralyze you. Suffering, remorse, sadness are all healthy emotions but they must not take over your life. Keeping things in perspective and getting back to the business of living your life can be hard but must be a priority. It's hard and you can get lost. I know because I did get lost a bit this year. I know you all have experienced these things your self, this shoot was a bit of therapy for me. Thanks, Dr. Kate!"
