“ Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.” - Frank Herbert, Dune.
Happy Sliders Sunday
The confusion of all nonhuman living creatures within the general and common category of the animal is not simply a sin against rigorous thinking, vigilance, lucidity, or empirical authority; it is also a crime. Not against animality precisely, but a crime of the first order against the animals, against animals.

Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Katendrecht, Migratiemuseum, Tornado, People (uncut)
Back to the Rotterdam MigratieMuseum (and the Tornado). It is situated in what was once a part of the giant San Francisco veem (harbour storage facility). It has been thru a lot. It was built for the HAL transatlantic shipping company in 1898, and its middle part was destroyed during WW2. The left part of the building (Fenix 1), among other things, served as a temporary art exposition space and now functions as the basis for the FenixLofts luxury apartment building. Ah, the story of gentrification.
The Migration Museum is in the right part of the former Veem, also known as Fenix 2. It once housed a Van Gend & Loos logistics hub, the Pinball Museum, the ‘Circuscentrum op De Kaap’ (Codarts Circus Arts school), and, last but not least, the Posse Brasserie.
It was spectacularly transformed (design Bureau Polderman & the Chinese MAD Architects) into the Fenix-Migration museum, with the ‘Tornado’ staircase (on display here) as its centre (designed by Ma Yansong, the founder of MAD).
And don’t think the museum is all about form and less about content. The way it commemorates the millions of emigrants who left Europe and Rotterdam in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is fascinating. The portrayal of the more recent migration to Europe is also documented excellently. For instance, there’s a dusty Peugeot 404 pick-up on display that was used to transport migrants through the Sahara to Libya on their way to the risky Mediterranean crossing.
Pretzel logic is a Steely Dan song from the eponymous album.
You can't possibly shoot a ramp that looks like this with a standard lens, right? This scene demanded a fish eye for sure. This is the entry to the Springfield Armory in Springfield MA. The Armory was the primary manufacturing center for US military firearms, operating between 1777 and 1968. Most of the property is a college campus now. This is an exposure blended image to tame the highlights and bring out the shadows.

little project i've been working on for awhile. it's two 5x7 canvases, "logic" is hanging from "resist" by fishing line.

When you have a full fridge, no cake saver, and need to safely store a cake from marauding critters, you store that confection in the microwave - right?.....

Lucerne's Jesuit Church is the first large baroque church built in Switzerland north of the alps. First and foremost is an expression of the Catholic Church's 17th century struggle to regain spiritual leadership in the counter-reformation. At the same time it does show that the Catholics then refused to accept any discussion on major points of criticism by the protestant churches. Instead, baroque architecture displays power and glory and emphasizes exactly those parts of Catholic tradition (especially the veneration of saints) and visual culture (as opposed to the protestant emphasis on the word of the biblical scriptures).
There is perfect logic that Lucerne, seeing itself as the capital of the Catholic fraction of Switzerland in pre-modern times, should have constructed this building. Today, Jesuit Church is a major tourist attraction and serves as a concert hall while it has become almost irrelevant to local church life from a religious point of view.

An archive shot, but one that perfectly shows what has been our weather for the past 24 hours +. We were under a flash flood watch and tornado watch, along with a severe thunderstorm watch for the better part of today....on into the wee small hours of tomorrow morning as well.
i took this on one of those kind of days...just not THIS one! Waiting for a break in the deluge to make a bolt from the car to the house. Why is it my umbrella is never where i need it to be!? i am beginning to see the logic in having half a dozen of them in various spots at my beck and call....not that it matters all that much since my hair is poker straight anyway!!
Hope you all had a speedy fast week and are set to enjoy a completely delightful weekend!
HFF, all!

Logic Lane is a small, historic cobbled lane through University College in Oxford, England, so called because it was the location of a school of logicians.
In the 13th and 14th centuries it was known as Horseman Lane. During the medieval period, a horse-mill was located here. It was also known as Horsemull Lane. The name of Logic Lane was adopted by the 17th century, due to a school of logicians at the northern end of the lane.

i made this for my very talented friend vashti's new album. its called love + logic, hence the title of this image!
i think this fits her music well (its very soft and whimsical sounding), and i think it shows the idea of having to pick between love and logic clearly (typically i try to show things in a deeper way, but i think for an album cover its helpful to be more upfront!). though im not tooooo excited since the image itself isnt the most unique - i mean, how many photos are out there of someone stepping off a cliff? ive also used a composition so similar to this a few other times. :P the full image i had in mind for this was basically impossible for me to create at this point in time, given the fact that it was fully dependent upon location (even this is completely built in photoshop, i took it in my backyard... in a plain ol' field!), which is always a bit of a bummer. however i was very happy to get a chance to use this beautiful vintage wedding gown that i bought over a year ago!
if youre interested in seeing more from this shoot, or if youre interested in finding out more about vashti's album release, head on over to facebook.
p.s. i miss you flickr!! i have SO many new ideas for personal work, but ive been on client stuff like crazy. ive got one more wedding and one more family shoot in the next week, and then after that ill catch up on editing, and i should be back to flickr quite a bit before it snows (hopefully...)!
