Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees full of colour like this Japanese Maple, one of my favourites, which I caught as it is starting to turn one on one of my walks the other week. This leaf puts me in mind of beautiful red patent shoe leather, and reminded me of the faerie tale The Goblin Cobblers (perhaps more commonly known as The Elves and the Shoemaker) by the Brothers Grimm.

The day I took this photo was a lovely and sunny day with bright blue skies, although there was a crispness in the air. I thought I'd go for a walk and take advantage of the sunny conditions, as rain arrived the day after.

During this past Autumn our Summer lingered almost until the end of October; then within a week we had severe winter weather that lasted for a number of weeks without a break. Consequently, the leaves did not have time to turn colour and fall to the ground. Instead, they froze on the trees before they could send their nutrients back to the roots. Thus, these rich leather-coloured leaves are still gracing the orchards.

The original image is an ICM from Phillip Island, with a texture added and some other playful elements. It just evolved. It is one of those ones I'm not sure about but I am putting it up anyway. Been listening to Mr Dylan alot so the quote is there.

Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather is a really beautiful song. Thought to be written about one of his very early loves, Suzie Rotolo who was travelling in Europe at the time while he was left behind.
