The Saarpolygon is a memorial to the coal mining in the Saar region, which finally ended in June 2012. The large accessible sculpture stands on the Duhamel slagheap in Ensdorf, which rises about 150 metres above the surrounding Saartal valley.
The walkable monument is about 30 metres high. The 35-metre-long transverse section is accessed from both sides by 132 steps at a height of 25 metres. The viewing platform weighs around 60 tons. The Saarpolygon is designed in such a way that it has a different shape from each direction: rectangular archway, triangle standing on the top or base, cross with horizontal line. In the ground plan it has the shape of a Z.
147 designs were submitted in the competition of ideas for the artistic implementation - the winner was the Berlin architect duo Katja Pfeiffer and Oliver Sachse.
Their design of a large walk-in sculpture, which "as a symbol of change in an abstract language of form traces a variety of mining motifs", is intended to form a gateway into the future in the eyes of the beholder. The formal language of the puristic steel grid construction is intended to express the inseparability of origin and future in the country and to show the classic connection of coal, steel and energy in Saarland.

Das Saarpolygon ist ein Denkmal zur Erinnerung an den im Juni 2012 endgültig beendeten Steinkohlebergbau im Saarrevier. Die begehbare Großplastik steht auf der Bergehalde Duhamel in Ensdorf, die sich rund 150 Meter über das umliegende Saartal erhebt. Das begehbare Denkmal ist rund 30 Meter hoch. Zu dem rund 35 Meter überspannenden Querstück führen von beiden Seiten genau 132 Stufen in 25 Meter Höhe. Die Aussichts-plattform wiegt rund 60 Tonnen. Das Saarpolygon ist so gestaltet, dass es aus jeder Richtung eine andere Form hat: rechteckiger Torbogen, auf der Spitze oder der Basis stehendes Dreieck, Kreuz mit Querstrich. Im Grundriss hat es die Form eines Z.
Im Ideenwettstreit zur künstlerischen Umsetzung wurden 147 Entwürfe eingereicht- Sieger war das Berliner Architektenduo Katja Pfeiffer und Oliver Sachse. Ihr Entwurf einer begehbaren Großskulptur, die „als Symbol des Wandels in abstrakter Formensprache vielgestaltige Bergbaumotive nachzeichnet“, soll in den Augen des Betrachters ein Tor in die Zukunft bilden. Die Formensprache der puristischen Stahlgitterkonstruktion soll die Untrennbarkeit von Herkunft und Zukunft im Lande zum Ausdruck bringen und die klassische Verbundenheit von Kohle, Stahl und Energie im Saarland zeigen.

Die Hafenverwaltung / Port-Authority in Antwerpen mit einem Reiter von Zahah Hadid, die man auch am MAS vom Stadthafenbecken, Godefriduskai aus sehen kann.
Ich habe das Gebäude noch nie im Kontext gezeigt gesehen, und deshalb nie ein Größe-Gefühl bekommen, deshalb veröffentliche ich für euch dieses Foto. Es liegt quasi im Niemandsland in einer chaotischen Industriebrache und ohne jedweden Bezug zur Umgebung an der Shelde, wo ständig etwas Neues gebaut wird.
Auf dem Hinweg begleitete uns die "Kakophonie" einer über Kilometer extrem laut zu hörenden Schlag-Ramme. die Spundwände in eines der Hafenbecken verbrachte, um vor Wasser geschützt Fundamente einbringen zu können.
Die von den Gebäuden verschieden stark zurückhallenden Echos verschleierten den Ursprungsort und machten das Aufsuchen des futuristischen Bauwerks noch surrealer.
Am Kai liegt ein, mehr oder weniger, schrottreifes, belgisches Marineboot, amscheined ist die belgische Marine in einem ähnlichen desolaten Zustand, wie unsere Marine und unser Heer. ... ;-) ...

This night photograph of Waibaidu Bridge was taken over two weeks ago during my recent visit to Shanghai.
Waibaidu Bridge, also known as Garden Bridge of Shanghai, crossed the Suzhou River that merged with Huangpu River. This bridge was built in 1907 and was the first steel truss bridge in China.
The long exposure photograph was taken from a spot on the pedestrian walkway on one side of the Bridge. The illuminated bridge, with traffic light trails, contrasted well with some of Shanghai’s landmarks in Pudong, including Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Tower.
This landmark tree sits in the middle of a farm road intersection. Scouted it out last week and hope to get a sunset or Milky Way type image.
A rain wet Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park runs through the forest along McDonald Creek. Completed in 1932, the spectacular, 50 mile long Going-to-the-Sun Road bisects the park east to west. The paved two-lane highway spans the width of Glacier National Park and crosses the Continental Divide at 6,646-foot-high Logan Pass. It passes large glacial lakes and cedar forests in the lower valleys; canyons and cliffs; culminating at the windswept alpine tundra atop the pass. Scenic viewpoints and pullouts line the road offering dramatic views and photo opportunities.
The road is nationally significant for its design and monumental engineering accomplishments. The original roadbed, bridges, tunnels, culverts, retaining walls, and guard walls were built in the “NPS Rustic” style. Individually, these structures are often significant examples of period engineering and design philosophy; collectively, they comprise a vital, integral component of the road’s unique character. Most of these structures were designed to harmonize with the roadway setting by using native materials and by blending with landforms as much as possible.The Going-To-The-Sun Road is a National Historic Landmark, is included in the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Built between 1932 and 1958, St Columba’s Cathedral is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Argyll and the Isles. It was built in a neo-Gothic style of highly distinctive pink Peterhead and blue Inverawe granite. The Bell Tower soars above the cathedral which is located on the sea front at the northern end of Oban creating a distinctive landmark for vessels arriving or departing from the Port.

Oslo City Hall is a landmark building in Oslo and Norway.
The architects of the building, Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson had a clear idea of what they wanted the building to represent, and artists such as Edvard Munch, Henrik Sørensen, Alf Rolfsen and Per Krogh have helped to underpin the architects' vision.
The main hall was decorated by two famous Norwegian artists: Henrik Sørensen and Alf Rolfsen.
In one of the frescoes, the pillars of Norwegian identity are represented—fishing, forestry, and industry—flanked on either end by explorer Fridtjof Nansen and playwright Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, both of whom won Nobel prizes.

Der älteste Kirchenbau Erfurts wurde im 8. Jahrhundert grundgelegt. Anfangs diente der Dom als Bischofssitz und war während des Mittelalters bis in das frühe 19. Jahrhundert Sitz des Collegiatstifts St. Marien. 1507 erhielt Martin Luther im Dom die Priesterweihe. Der ursprünglich romanische Kirchenbau erfuhr in der Zeit der Gotik entscheidende Umbauten.
Berühmt ist der Dom wegen der Gloriosa, der mit einem Durchmesser von 2,56 Metern größten freischwingenden mittelalterlichen Glocke der Welt.
Die fünfschiffige frühgotische Hallenkirche St. Severi war im 13. Jahrhundert Stiftskirche der regulierten Augustinerchorherren. Zum kostbaren mittelalterlichen Schmuck des Innenraumes gehören zahlreiche Plastiken, der Severi-Sarkophag (von dem nach ihm benannten "Meister des Severisarkophages"), Altäre, der gotische Taufstein und das Alabasterrelief des Erzengels "Michael".
Das Ensemble von Dom und Severikirche bildet eine imposante Kulisse für die jährlich im Sommer stattfindenden Dom-Stufen-Festspiele.

Begin as a log cabin in 1810, this site, with it's carriage house to the left, is now owned by the Indiana Landmarks and is available for weddings and events....incredible view of the Ohio River Valley.
Snapshot with the mobile phone. It was raining, and in the photo, the fine drizzle looked like photo noise, so I removed it. However, a hint of water mist still clings to the tower.
The Berlin TV Tower (constructed between 1965 and 1969) is the tallest structure in Germany, standing at 368 m (1,207 ft), but it's not the highest building tough (this is a bank tower in Frankfurt, but compared to world famous sky scrapers, it is still small with its 259 m (850 ft) without antenna).
The tower was built by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and was intended to be a symbol of the technological advancements of the socialist state.
Another fun fact: during the construction of the Berlin TV Tower, East Germany faced financial difficulties. To continue the project, they received financial support from West Germany. This collaboration was somewhat ironic, given the political divide between the two German states at the time.
The Gooderham Building, a historic landmark in Toronto, positioned among modern skyscrapers. The building’s distinctive triangular design and prominent turret make it a striking feature of the urban landscape. The fog surrounding the taller buildings creates a subtle atmosphere, softening the presence of contemporary structures and allowing the red-brick façade to stand out. The composition highlights the contrast between historic architecture and the city’s urban development. The discreet presence of pedestrians and urban elements adds to the scene, capturing a moment of calm amidst the bustling metropolitan environment.
Another shot of Silbury Hill. This shot is from a higher altitude and shows the top of the hill. The general public are not permitted to climb the hill, so the last time I saw the top was as a young child in the 1970's.

There are very few Acoma Indians living today on top of the mesa as most live in the village of Acoma fifteen miles away. The Acoma Indians of today are very educated and live with their native traditions, still make their native crafts and some speak the language of the Acoma people

The Arcade in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, is a Victorian-era structure of two nine-story buildings, joined by a five-story arcade with a glass skylight spanning over 300 feet (91 m), along the four balconies. Erected in 1890, at a cost of $867,000, the Arcade opened on Memorial Day (May 31, 1890), and is identified as the first indoor shopping mall in the United States. The Arcade was modified in 1939, remodeling the Euclid Avenue entrance and adding some structural support.

Not too far from this location, on June 30th, 1956 two commercial airplanes involved in a mid-air collision that was recorded as the worst aviation accident at the time. The tragedy spurred an unprecedented effort to modernize and increase air travel safety in America, culminating in the establishment of the modern the Federal Aviation Administration.
