As part of our Festival of Faiths, on Sunday evening, 11 September, 2016, Emeritus Professor of Islamic Studies, Carole Hillenbrand, gave a most fascinating and authoritative lecture on Islam: Diversity & Women. Here she is chatting afterwards with Revd Scott Mckenna.
The opulent and soaring interior of the Mausoleum of Sultan Qalaoun, which was constructed over a period of only 13 months in 1279. It was closed for many years for structural repairs and restoration, following the 1992 Cairo earthquake, but re-opened in 2010. Modelled on that of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, it must surely rank as the finest Islamic interior in Cairo.
