The labyrinthine lanes here are uneven, narrow and congested, slimy underfoot with goat & donkey shit and burst water mains and overhung with latticed balconies. Mosques, bazaars and medieval trading lanes abound, the smell of sheeshas (water pipe) and frying offal wafts in the air. It all combines to make this a unique part of a unique city.

The picture shows the house of Hadhrat Mirza Basheer-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih II, Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Dalhousie, Himachal Pardesh, India. He used to stay in the house during his summer trips. He visited the hill station several times and delivered a famous lecture here known as “Pahadi Wa'z” (Sermon of the Mount). Yesterday, I got an opportunity to visit this blessed house which is nowadays part of the Dalhousie Public School. bit.ly/1RW90nI

Islamic glassworkers discovered the technique of staining. Decorators stained glass in a variety of colors, which are often described as "luster." First, they painted the surface with a liquid containing a finely powdered copper oxide or silver oxide. Then they fired the glass in oxygen-free conditions at about 600C. Scholars belief that staining was perfected in the eight century.

Cairo's Islamic Museum is one of the finest dedicated to the art of Islam and its rich collection contains much to enjoy in all mediums.
Especially fine are the ceramics, with tilework and glazed pottery adorned with exquisitely intricate designs, whilst a good proportion incorporates elements of figurative imagery, normally forbidden under Islam and reflecting a more relaxed attitude to applied art and the pleasure it gives.
The museum is a delight and the beautifully displayed collection will richly reward a visit.
