Islamic Cairo is a very old area, surrounded by walls dating from the middle-ages, and was once the cultural, religious and intellectual center of the entire Arab world. Monumental buildings, palaces, many famous mosques and madrasas (religious schools), numerous markets and the oldest university in the world (al-Azhar) still stand witness to a glorious past. But, in the twentieth century Egypt has become a poor third world country and at present Islamic Cairo has fallen into decline, it is full of ruins and has degraded into a living and working neighborhood for the very poorest. The entire neighborhood has become a big bazaar, a labyrinth of dirty, stinking and dusty streets, with thousands of old-fashioned workshops where many crafts are still practiced at a very high level. Two million people live close by in what used to be the burial ground for the very rich: the City of the Dead. Entire families have taken possession of old sepulchers. Surrounding it are schools and stores, the center of an extremely lively social life.
The lot of the inhabitants is not just poverty; religion is also very important to them, namely the Sunni Islam. Daily life is interrupted five times a day by the call from the mosques that is heard everywhere and the people go to pray to Allah. The visitor can experience: the ramadan (a period of fasting), the hadj (a pilgrimage to Mecca), and exuberant weddings and funerals one after the other. Islamic Cairo is grandeur and decline, work and poverty, religion and tradition in confrontation with the modern world, as a great stage where everything takes place in an eternal scenario.

I am pretty certain that my mother’s high school classmate wouldn’t mind me borrowing his famous line and changing it to “Next stop, the Islamic Mind Zone.”
Following, in no particular order, is a small collection of actual quotes about Israel from prominent Hamas (and Islamic) leaders.
Hamas ‘Prime Minister’ Ismail Haniyeh:
•“We will never, ever, ever recognize Israel!”
•“The Hamas movement will lead Intifada after Intifada until we liberate Palestine – all of Palestine, Allah willing.”
Hamas cleric Muhsen Abu Ita:
•“The annihilation of the Jews here in Palestine is one of the most splendid blessings for Palestine. This will be followed by a greater blessing, Allah be praised, with a Caliphate that will rule the land.”
•“The blessing of Palestine is dependent upon the annihilation of the pit of global corruption (Israel) in it. When the head of the serpent of corruption is cut off here in Palestine, and its octopus tentacles are severed throughout the world, the real blessing will come.”
Hamas Interior Minister, Fathi Hammad:
•“Yes, victory is imminent. Victory is ours, and disgrace will be the lot of all the hypocrites, who agreed to be the shoes on the feet of the Zionists and the Americans.”
Egyptian Salafi Islamic cleric and scholar, Muhammad Hussein Yaqoub:
•“If the Jews left Palestine to us, would we start loving them? Of course not. We will never love them. Absolutely not.”
•“Your belief regarding the Jews should be, first, that they are infidels, and second, that they are enemies. They are enemies not because they occupied Palestine. They would have been enemies even if they did not occupy a thing.”
•“As for you Jews, the curse of Allah is upon you. The curse of Allah is upon you, whose ancestors were apes and pigs. You will not survive as long as a single one of us remains.”
Somewhere among those quotes you may be able to gain some insights into the agenda and objectives of Hamas and other Islamic terrorist organizations like Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, the Palestinian Authority (formerly known as The Palestinian Liberation Organization) and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Somewhere among those quotes you may be able to find a new understanding of why we pray for the peace of Jerusalem and why you should join us in praying for peace in the Middle East (Psalm 122:6).
We pray for Israel's protection and safety even now during the current conflicts with Hamas in Gaza, and despite the evil intentions of Hamas toward Jerusalem, for somehow peace to prevail.

Hisan was born with an enlarged spleen and chronic jaundice. It seemed that with passage of time he was not able to achieve milestones like a normal child. It took two and a half years of countless pricks, tests and hospital stays for him to be finally diagnosed with Nieman Pick Disease Type C at the NIH as my country Pakistan had no diagnostic facility available to be sure of such a diagnosis. Hisan fought hard, bravely and with utter grace. At the end his body was tired but his soul was not. Today I so much want that may my son would not have to go through so much pain and suffering but then I know this also that I would not have traded him for any other healthy child in my life. He meant and still means so much to me. I am indebted to parents of NPD who are making efforts for finding the cure to this monstrous disease and pray for a miracle soon. Keeping all the affected parents and kids in my prayers and thoughts.
