Artist Jacob Hashimoto's art installation on Governor's Island composed of thousands of rice paper and bamboo kites.
Even if your efforts seem desperate at times, even if your reason for finding a smile is for someone else, even if you don’t feel like it inside, find a reason. The importance lies in not giving up, in the ability to search when your inner self is dragging. The chapter may be new and parts of your heart may be somewhere in the last book, but life goes on. Like a looming conveyor belt, like it or not, we continue forward every day. And in our efforts to be brave, to find the reasons, we not only find and nurture our inner strength back to life but we encourage others around us to do the same. Joy is contagious. So is depression… use your power to spread joy. This picture was taken awhile back (2018 or 2019). I remember everything about the moment it was being taken. My health was at an all time low, I hadn’t yet been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s so I had no idea what was going on. My hair had started falling out, my hands felt like a 90 year old suffering from arthritis. My hands hurt so bad I had to give up photography for several months, as well as writing, playing the piano and other things that I did normally. The aches in my body made simple tasks like walking painful and the insomnia kept me from sleeping. I remember being so miserable and feeling so awful about life in general. My daughter wanted to practice taking portraits one day and I let her practice on my camera with me. Suddenly I needed to smile for my daughter. I didn’t feel like it, I didn’t feel anything but depressed. I hated the way I felt and the way I looked at the time. But as I smiled for my then 11 year old, something happened. There was a joy that happened between us, it was a choice I had to make to be happy for someone else. And it was a pivotal moment in my life. In the next few months I would go through several life changes that would thankfully slowly began to bring healing to my life and body. A long story I know for what seems like such a joyful moment. I needed to revisit that moment for myself. I needed to remind myself to find the reasons to smile… whether you needed a reminder yourself or not thank you for once again reading another rambling post :’) also I am using Instagram for stories and videos, more day to day life type stuff (maybe even less camera and more iPhone *gasp*) :) . If you’re there, send me a request. @missinterpretations8 • love you friends! xoxo
Jacob Hashimoto's art installation on Governor's Island
Description from the website: "Hashimoto’s Never Comes Tomorrow is a colorful, whimsical overhead outdoor installation adapted for Governors Island’s landmark Liggett Hall Archway.Constructed of hundreds of wooden cubes and massive steel funnels, this high energy sculptural installation plays with the architecture of the passageway, creating a virtual time tunnel or vortex between the Island’s Historic District and newly designed park with its colorful installation of forms. Never Comes Tomorrow merges Hashimoto’s interests in the systems of architecture, history and cosmology.
Happy Summer and Happy weekend everyone!
I know I am way behind on Flickr. I am just trying to catch up right now.
I found out last week that I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I have had hypothyroid since I was diagnosed at 19, but had no idea my immune system was attacking my own thyroid. So the last week I have been learning to live gluten-free and pretty much adjusting my diet and thyroid medications.
Anyway, I am really just taking time right now to get my health in check and be healthy and happy. I am still here!
I hope all of you are having a wonderful day....big hugs to all of you!
xoxo
I'm enveloped in Jacob Hashimoto's Superabundant Atmosphere. The entire installation was made up of thousands of handmade kites hanging at different lengths from the ceiling.
In person, the piece was incredibly soothing and non-confrontational... unlike the photo -- which actually makes it look more like an angry jelly fish wanting to suck my brains out.
This Mother’s Day weekend has been far from peaceful for millions of mothers living in the world’s second largest city, São Paulo.
The effects of organized crime by the infamous PCC - Primeiro Comando da Capital (1st. Commando of the Capital) became quite visible today, even in our own surrounding community in the southern suburbs of this mega city. Public transport and other amenities in our community were attacked and set on fire by members of the PCC. Gunfire between police and criminals could be heard throughout the community and most of the local shops and schools closed their doors to the public today.
This sudden wave of attacks is rated as the largest in recent history by organized crime and seems to have been provoked by preventive actions taken by the authorities to transfer prisoners, amongst them leaders of the PCC, to a specially designed, high security prison 620 kms from the city.
The 180 attacks during the weekend, mainly on police authorities, have left at least 81 people dead. The victims confirmed so far are 22 military police, 8 prison warders, 6 civil police, 3 municipal police, 38 criminals and other citizens. Another 49 people have been wounded in the attacks.
With the general panic caused by these attacks, many people in the city left work earlier today causing 212 kms of traffic jams against the normal 58 kms at normal rush hour.
Among those travelling back to Hummingbird in the traffic jams was Cida, my volunteer personal secretary, together with one of our youth musicians, Edimilson and his family, who were on their way from the Federal Police after sorting out passports for a forthcoming international cultural event in which some of our kids will be participating next month in Europe.
The following are extracts from Cida’s e-mail to me:
Gregory, the Police stopped us in Diadema (our local municipality) with loaded and cocked machine-guns.
Good God!! Edmilson’s mother and myself became more than embarrassed by the situation. It seemed like we were nothing less than bandits to them.
They ransacked Edmilson and his father. There were two police patrol cars and 8 policemen in all. It was really quite humiliating for me because in my entire life I have been stopped numerous times by police in roadblocks, where they merely checked my documents and let me through. I have never had to get out of my car to be put through this.
But, as Edmilson’s father explained, they are probably checking out people this way due to the last few day’s happenings. You can imagine our situation, combined with our own fright, in a new car with dark windows, our equally dark skin colour and of course the wollen balaclava on Edmilson’s head, together with the fact that most people in this country are predujice towards such things.
I felt really bad about the entire situation because I’ve spent the best part of my life working hard, and whilst these police were making innocent people like us feel very ashamed, loads of Banks and other public amenities were being blown up and destroyed by the real bandits.
I must admit, I feel very worried about the future of my country, especially when the police can’t even guarantee their own security, let alone ours.
I’m also very worried about our kids, and my own son DU (Cida lost her eldest son, William, a few years ago, murdered in cold-blood together with a girl-friend), because there is no way we can keep our kids locked up at home, therefore, each time my DU leaves home I’m left with so much worry on my mind.
A warning has now been spread by members of the PCC in our community this evening, stating that nobody is to be found on the streets after 20.00hrs. Hummingbird has locked its front doors and our kids haven’t stopped ringing all evening asking if we will be having normal activities tomorrow. All I can say is YES! Life must go on and as long as we reject facing the inconsequences of our society we must learn to live with the ignorance of those governing this country and the growing frustrations caused by injustice and social inequality.
See Rodrigo Hashimoto's SlideShow of the PCC situation surrounding us in São Paulo.
The photo is of 13-year old Boaz, one of the latest street kids at Hummingbird. More about him in photos to be posted later.
another gorgeous day in honolulu.

Sea bream, tuna, salmon, and tilapia ready for slicing at Reiko Hashimoto's Japanese cookery school in South London.
This was the centrepiece of Sculpture by the Sea on Tamarama beach - a 30 metre circle of red and yellow survey flags in the colours of Australian surf life savers.
The creator is Carl Billingsley, professor of sculpture at North Carolina University.
In the background - the blue aluminium 'look at me' by Rebecca Rose; Thomas Murray and Nicole Larkin's 'ephemeral aura', made of plywood and steel; Marina DeBris's (!) 'aquarium of the pacific gyre' which includes rubbish from the beach; Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club (ok not a sculpture), Horizon to its right, and David Hashimoto's 'moment of clarity', which features glass, metal and fibreglass.

Hashimoto's view of Japanese collectivism reminds me of the sort of nested web of fear that may exist in dictatorships, or more precisely, in an Orwellian dystopia (Orwell, 1948) were the "loved" and feared dictator does not exist at all.
Following on from research by his mentor, Toshio Yamagishi (e.g. Yamagishi, 2008) Hirofumi Hashimoto (2011) investigated Japanese attitudes towards cooperation and independence.
First he found that while Japanese think that 1a) Other people like cooperation and 2b) They themselves cooperate, they would ideally like to be 3c) independent. In other words, the Japanese appear to be wearing a mask of Japanese cooperativeness over a heart of independent ideals and evaluations. They continue to wear this mask because they believe others have a dim view of individualists - that they would be ostracised or worse if they came out of the closet. To demonstrated this Hashimoto showed that 1b) Japanese believe that others negatively evaluate individualists. However, he also showed that 2b) Japanese in fact positively evaluate individualistic others.
He then asked so how does the system remain balanced or intact? Why isn't there a small boy that says "The emperor is wearing no clothes" or rather "In fact I admire independent people" bringing the ersatz "valuation of cooperation" down like a house of cards?
Hashimoto argues for, and demonstrates, another layer of sham. He further asked 1c) what other people thought of those that admire individulists and 2c) What the subjects thought of people that admire individualists. As closet admirers of individualists, it is not surprising that the subjects said that they liked others that also admire individualists. But once again, they said they believed that others negatively evaulate those that admire individualists. Hence even those that see through the sham, realise the emperor is naked, or at least that they can't see the clotes, and that they like individualists, are afraid to say so.
Hashimoto presumably believes that this web of fear is infinitely nested, lest someone should come out and say "Acutally, I like people that admire individualists," or "Actually, I like people that say that they like people who admire individualists," etc because at every level each individual presumes that they will be ostracised for saying so since at every level they believe that others do not admire individualism.
This situation is a little like that which I presume pertains in a dicatorship. The participants in the Valkerie plot to assinate Hilter where hampered by their (in part erroneous) belief that other people admired the Fuerer. Hashimoto's nested web of fear may have even more in common with that described in George Orwell's "1984," in which the feared dictator -- "big brother" -- may be dead, or may never even have existed.
According to Hashimoto's vision of Japan, collectivism as an aspiration, exists only as a bogeyman, that no one ever aspired towards but everyone was afraid to admit it due to fear of ostracism from others. And this view, inmho, plays towards Western views of Japanese, or indeed everyone else, and the commonly held Western belief that in fact everyone is a freedom and autonomy loving Westerner underneath.
Hashimoto and Yamagishi are very clever, and their data appears irrefutably sound. But, if they are right, that there is this disconnection between culture and psychology, that sheepish East Asians have the private life of woolves, then Cultural Psychology as a mutally constructing feedback system, (Markus and Kitayama, 1991) would need to be thrown out the window. The stakes are high.
Addendum
As usual my attempt to circumvent his dillemma is to argue that the apparent contradictions of the Japanese heart only exist when you are asking them to vocalise, or answer linguistically framed likert tests about cooperation and individualism. There is something so linguistically attractive or imperative about autonomy, that some economists have argued following Kant, that it has the status of a synthetic judgement a priori. How can one make a counter claim against the value of autonomy, without asserting that one does not want what one wants? One runs up into a modied form of the liar paradox, the last guardian of logocentrism.
Thus our words, including Japanese words, claim for themselves freedom, but what is the situation in the minds eye? Are independent people beautiful? Is independent behaviour beautiful? How about cooperation? Have you seen the Koshien Baseball Tournament, and why does anyone watch it? What of people that admire independent people, are they really beautiful too? The Japanese do love the way thinks are in Japan, and discount their unrealistic linguistic aspirations and admiration for independence as will o the wisp (the closest translation I could come up with of ) "nai mono denari" (ないものねだり).

He qualified for the 1915 Star as he landed in Egypt on the 24th July 1915. However the card is also noted “Dis. 28.1.16” and that he would also receive the Silver War Badge.
Harvey also qualified for the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
While his Service Records do not appear to have survived the incendiary attack during the Blitz on the Warehouse where all the Other Ranks Army Service Records were stored, his discharge papers are available. They reveal that Harvey saw one period of service, was discharged and then recalled when conscription was introduced.
He was discharged on the 16th May 1918 at Dover, being “no longer physically fit for War Service.” Harvey was then 37 years and 10 months old, was 5 feet 8 and a half inches tall, with a sallow complexion, black hair and brown eyes. There were no descriptive marks. A labourer by trade his intended place of residence was 2 Chapel Lane, Methwold, Brandon, Norfolk.
His last unit was the Siege School Aldershot, Royal Garrison Artillery and he was Gunner 284176.
His Military character was rated Good and he was stated to be a steady and hard working man.
He had served on the Home Front for all of his time in the Army, (28.7.16 to 16.5.18).
His original Medical Report is included with his Discharge Papers and there is a note that he was an “Ex-soldier” and that form was being used for an Ex-soldier recalled for Service with the Colours under the provisions of M.S. Acts 1916. The Medical took place at Norwich on the 28th July 1916. Then aged 36 and born Methwold, he was then only 5 feet 6 inches. He wighed 106lbs and was judged to be of Poor Physical Development, with Poor feet, Varicose Veins and a Pendulous abdomen. His original service number looks like 9176 Wes.
His next of kin at that time was his mother, Elizabeth Slapp, of 2 Chapel Lane, Methwold nr Brandon.
On the 26th December 1917 he was admitted to the Connaught Hospital, Aldershot, with a diagnosis of Addison’s disease. He had profound anaemia which wasn’t responding to treatment, and while his blood pressure wasn’t low, he had a very pronounced pigmentation of the lips, mucus membrane, cheeks and palate.
His Discharge Medical records that he originally enlisted at Bury St Edmunds on the 28th January 1908. He was stated to have been aged 41 at his last birthday. The place and origin of his Addison’s disease could be be said. Harvey had a history of jaundice and dysentery at the Dardenelles in 1915, Since then he had occasional enteritis with haemophysis and he had until recently been seen as a case of Phthisis. The board believed his condition had been aggravated by service in the military and was not attributable to or aggravated by the behaviour of the soldier himself. The Medical Board sitting at the Connaught Hospital on the 25th April 1918 found him 100% disabled and permanently unfit. It seems they believed his condition was too far gone to warrant further treatment.
His pension award sheet shows his date of birth as the 18th July 1880 and that he was a single man.
A memo from the Ministry of Pensions received by the Army Records Office on the 11th January 1919 records that Harvey died on the 5th December 1918. It gives his Chelsea Hospital number as N.R. 2P1584.
No match on Picture Norfolk, the County Image Archive.
No obvious Soldiers Will or Civil Probate for this man.
1880 – birth and baptism…….
The birth of a Harvey Smith was registered with the Civil Authorities in the Thetford District of Norfolk in the January to March quarter, (Q1), of 1880. His pension award sheet in his discharge papers however shows his date of birth as the 18th July 1880. While the month is written in full there still is the potential for confusion between January and July \ months 1 and 7 which could have been compounded by the Pensions Clerk.
The baptism of a Harvey Smith, born 11th January 1880 took place at St George, Methwold on the 23rd March 1882. Only his mother, Elizabeth Smith, is shown and the parish register is noted that she was a “singlewoman.” They were living at the Old Vicarage Houses, Methwold.

1881 Census of England and Wales
The 1 year old Harvey Smith, born Methwold, was recorded living in a dwelling on the High Street, Methwold. This was the dwelling of his widowed Grand-mother, Amy Smith, (aged 58, born Gooderstone, Norwich). Amy is recorded living on “Parish Pay”. Also in the household are two of her unmarried sons, John, (26) and Walter, (16) – both Agricultural Labourers born Methwold.
His mother, the unmarried Elizabeth Smith, aged 22 and born Methwold, was recorded as a live in General Servant of a household on Cock Street, Feltwell, Norfolk. The household was that of a farmer Henry Heading and his wife Caroline.
1891 Census of England and Wales
The 11 year old Harvey Smith, born Methwold, was now recorded living at West Tofts, Norfolk. This was the household of a married couple, William H. Slapp, (aged 33, General Labourer, born Wilton, Norfolk) and Elizabeth Slapp, (aged 32, born Methwold). Although the additional information on the CWGC would indicate that William was the stepfather, and Elizabeth, by implication, was the biological mother, the census taker has actually recorded that Harvey is Williams’ “son-in-law”. There is also a second “son-in-law”, William R. Smith, (aged 8 and born Methwold). The couple then appear to have two children of their own –
John………...aged 6….born West Tofts
Lillian M......aged 1….born West Tofts
Also living with them is a Lodger, John Slapp, aged 18, an Agricultural Labourer born Brandon, Suffolk.
1901 Census of England and Wales
The Slapp family were now recorded living at Chapel Lane, Methwold. Although the head of the household is now recorded as the 43 year old Agricultural Labourer Harry Slapp, born Hockwold, Norfolk, I believe there enough similarities in his details and that of the other members of the family to make sure the right people have been identified. His wife Elizabeth was then aged 42 and born Methwold. Children listed in the household are a son, Harvey Smith, (21, an Agricultural Labourer, born Metwold), and three daughters, Lilly, (11), Hannah, (8) and Maud Slapp, (1) – all born West Tofts.
1911 Census of England and Wales
The ‘29’ year old unmarried Farm Labourer, Harvey Smith, born Methwold, was recorded living in the household of his employer, Isaac Laud, at Plantation Farm, Wereham, Stoke Ferry, Norfolk.
His mother and step-father were still living at “Chaple” Lane, Methwold – this was the first census return intended to be completed by the householder. William Harry Slapp, (53), a Farm Labourer born Hockwold Wilton, and Elizabeth Slapp, (52), have been married 27 years and have had 8 children, of which 6 were then still alive. Children still single and living at home were Hannah, (18) and Alice Maud, (11).
On the day…………………………………
The death of the 38 year old Harvey Smith was recorded in the Thetford District in the October to December quarter, (Q4), of 1918.
Addison's disease, also known as primary adrenal insufficiency and hypocortisolism, is a long-term endocrine disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones. Symptoms generally come on slowly and may include abdominal pain, weakness, and weight loss. Darkening of the skin in certain areas may also occur. Under certain circumstances, an adrenal crisis may occur with low blood pressure, vomiting, lower back pain, and loss of consciousness. An adrenal crisis can be triggered by stress, such as from an injury, surgery, or infection.
Addison's disease arises from problems with the adrenal gland such that not enough of the steroid hormone cortisol and possibly aldosterone are produced, most often due to damage by the body's own immune system in the developed world and tuberculosis in the developing world
Addison’s disease is named after Thomas Addison, the British physician who first described the condition in On the Constitutional and Local Effects of Disease of the Suprarenal Capsules (1855). All of Addison's six original patients had tuberculosis of the adrenal glands. While Addison's six patients in 1855 all had adrenal tuberculosis, the term "Addison's disease" does not imply an underlying disease process.
Addison's disease is associated with the development of other autoimmune diseases, such as type I diabetes, thyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), celiac disease, or vitiligo.

sara is the voice behind the single gal's guide to rheumatoid arthritis and the organizer of our recent sick chick club meet-ups in nyc.
she is such a terrific person, great friend and amazing advocate for people with RA and other autoimmune diseases. i am so happy to have met her! sadly (for me, at least), she is soon moving to baltimore. i know it's going to be great for her, but i'll miss my new friend!
this is the beginning of a project i am working on. my plan is to do a portrait series of people with autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, celiac disease, hashimoto's disease, etc.). often, these diseases strike people at a young age and are chronic. we don't usually look sick, but they never really go away. there are so many people out there who are struggling with these health issues, and the general public doesn't really understand. i want to give a face to these diseases to inform my friends and family at least, and the world at best, that we really aren't "too young to have that" and that even though we "don't look sick," we are. and we need your care and support.
with that, if any one wants to volunteer for a portrait session or has a friend or family member who might be interested, please flickr mail me or e-mail me at jodimckeephotography@gmail.com. thanks!!

This is one of the courses from the 9-course ($300/pp) kaiseki experience at Hashimoto and a series that Hashimoto kindly allowed me to take for the TorontoLife post as photographs of the kaseki dinner is normally not permitted.
Besides the nearly translucent slices of line-caught porgy, careful attention was placed on all other elements on this only sashimi course served at Hashimoto (an authentic traditional kaiseki, aka the only one known to exist in NA). The focus here is on the purity of the ingredients - using the best sourced locally and mainly from Japan (obviously for the cuisine) and the great skill/respect given to highlight and enhance the natural characteristics of each component. Kei (Hashimoto; Assistant Manager) was also careful to note that the fish served is always white, which represents both a purity in flavour and in the craft.
For those who are curious, porgy has this mildly sweet unadulterated fresh flavour and supple yet firm texture. The fish was served with pickled vegetables representing all seasons (for the photo - namely to make it timeless). My favourite were the fluffy soy-mirin bukudaikai (tree seeds), but other details included shimeji straw mushrooms (for fall) bundled together by suizenji-nori, daikon carrot flower (for spring), lightly pickled lotus root and fine shredded radish-daikon (for palate cleansing). It was a lovely interactive course. In fact DIY pairing was encouraged. Fresh grated wasabi (slight spice, creamy smooth) and house blended soy were the final finishes.
