Dinophysis acuminata is a single-celled organism belonging to a group of algae called dinoflagellates. This ovoid (egg-shaped) dinoflagellate is armored, meaning it has a hard outer coating. It is widely distributed in temperate waters and is most common and abundant in coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which are especially eutrophic (nutrient-rich). Dinophysis acuminata is a bloom-forming species, and blooms have been reported from many parts of the world, usually from late spring to early fall. Dinophysis acuminata produces okadaic acid, a toxin that can accumulate in shellfish and cause diarrheic shellfish poisoning in humans if contaminated shellfish are consumed. Blooms of this species have caused shellfish harvesting area closures in Texas waters. There have no reports of blooms, illness or other harmful effects from D. acuminata in Florida waters.

Got everyone on, save for me - lighting conditions were somewhat challenging!
