Allium ursinum

The Latin specific name ursinum translates to 'bear' and refers to the supposed brown bear's taste for the bulbs; folk tales describe the bears consuming them after awakening from hibernation.

When I heard that the Macro Monday theme was veggies I knew I wanted in. I was thinking along the chive/onion/leek line but when I went to the store I didn't see anything that jumped out at me except for a possible shoot with cauliflower against a white background. I decided to pass and kept looking. I started to look into small onions but then I saw a bin with cloves of garlic. I looked through the bin and came across this clove! I found what I was looking for, and at $0.79/clove the price was right. When I presented it to the cashier, he looked at me funny and suggested I get one in better shape because this one had sprouted. I asked him to be careful with it because I wanted to photograph it. He then asked that I wait a minute and kept looking at the clove while he made a phone call. It seems store policy is to throw out cloves like this and in the end I got it for FREE! Free is nice and with that as a backstory here is my macro garlic clove shot.

The clove measures 2.5 (W) X 2.75 (T) and was shot with my: 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro lens with a two shot stack. Light provided through a south facing window with the clove sitting on some black paper.

Now its off to a cup of water for a little more growing and perhaps another shoot in a few weeks!

Wild Garlic in woodland at Llantarnam.

Less than 7.00 cm in all directions.

Black garlic is fermented white garlic... tastes very good, is healthy and you don’t smell like consumption

Botanically, garlic is considered a vegetable. It shows characteristics of a vegetable as it has a bulb, tall stem, and long leaves. - - - - -

The good thing is tonight these little bad boys are going to flavor up a chicken dinner. - - - - -

Garlic is one of the healthiest foods on earth. Low in calories but very high in nutrition, with many health properties: anti blood coagulation, antioxidant, antiviral, antimicrobial..................

I actually love garlic. I once had garlic ice cream. It was let's say an acquired taste. ha !

A whole bulb of garlic, stolen from the kitchen, cut in half and now stinking out my office.
