Why do swans have such a grim expression?
In short: They don't actually mean to be grim — they just appear that way. Their dark, slightly slanted eyes, plus their powerful beaks, give them this "angry look." It's purely visual.
Fun fact: In quiet moments, swans can actually appear quite elegant and almost gentle. But as soon as they fix their gaze on you, your brain automatically thinks: "I've done something wrong."
Warum haben Schwäne so einen grimmigen Ausdruck?
Kurz gesagt: Sie meinen es gar nicht grimmig – sie wirken nur so. Ihre dunklen, leicht schräg stehenden Augen plus der kräftige Schnabel geben ihnen diesen „bösen Blick“. Das ist reine Optik.
Fun Fact: In ruhigen Momenten können Schwäne tatsächlich ziemlich elegant und fast sanft wirken. Aber sobald sie dich fixieren, denkt dein Gehirn automatisch: „Ich habe etwas falsch gemacht.“

Eastern Great Egret
Scientific Name: Ardea modesta
Description: The Great Egret's overall plumage is white, and, for most of the year, when not breeding, the bill and facial skin are yellow. The feet are dark olive-grey or sooty black, as are the legs. During the breeding season, the bill turns mostly black and the facial skin becomes green. Also at this time, long hair-like feathers (nuptial plumes) hang across the lower back, and the legs become pinkish-yellow at the top. Young Great Egrets are similar to the adults, but have a blackish tip to the bill.
Similar species: The Great Egret can be confused with other white egrets found in Australia. It can be distinguished by the length of its neck, which is greater than the length of its body (and with a noticeable kink two-thirds of the way up), a dark line extending from the base of the bill to behind the eye and the overall larger size.
Distribution: Great Egrets occur throughout most of the world. They are common throughout Australia, with the exception of the most arid areas.
Habitat: Great Egrets prefer shallow water, particularly when flowing, but may be seen on any watered area, including damp grasslands. Great Egrets can be seen alone or in small flocks, often with other egret species, and roost at night in groups.
Feeding: The Great Egret usually feeds alone. It feeds on molluscs, amphibians, aquatic insects, small reptiles, crustaceans and occasionally other small animals, but fish make up the bulk of its diet. The Great Egret usually hunts in water, wading through the shallows, or standing motionless before stabbing at prey. Birds have also been seen taking prey while in flight.
Breeding: The Great Egret breeds in colonies, and often in association with cormorants, ibises and other egrets. Both sexes construct the nest, which is a large platform of sticks, placed in a tree over the water. The previous years' nest may often be re-used. Both sexes also incubate the eggs and care for the young (usually two or three).
Minimum Size: 70cm
Maximum Size: 90cm
Average size: 80cm
Breeding season: October to December in the south; March to May in the north.
Clutch Size: 2 to 6
Incubation: 28 days
Nestling Period: 40 days

Known amongst Old Dalby test track train crew as the 'Grimston Facial', the most southerly of three vent shafts in Grimston Tunnel has a constant waterfall throughout the year. The water is a bit pungent and it's not a good idea to have your cab window open as you pass. In this view, 56098 has been posed for a photo with its headlight illuminating the cascading water. 8 February 2025.

Avec cette photo d’archive (2014), je voulais vous aviser de mon intention de créer un nouveau groupe sur Flickr.
Depuis toujours, et ceux qui me connaissent depuis mes débuts sur cette galerie (2012), savent que j’affectionne particulièrement « les portraits de rue » d’où mon intention de concrétiser cette passion au travers d’un nouveau groupe qui s’intitulera ; « Facial Expression and Body Language » !
Je dois également vous avouer que depuis un certain temps et pour des raison diverses dont un problème persistant de lombaires et un confinement difficilement supporté, je n’ai plus eu guère l’occasion de faire mes « petites vadrouilles photographiques » dans les rues …
Mais tout cela se soigne comme il est courant de dire et je serai de retour le plus rapidement possible sur « le terrain » ….
Quant à ma présence sur la galerie, elle ne me pose pas de problème puisque il me suffit de me trouver devant mon iMac pour être en contact avec vous tous, mes amis « les artistes » !

Fuji X-Pro3. I took the inspiration for this image from the charcoal drawings of Alison Lambert (British artist). It is a 'response' rather than an 'imitation'.
Yet another one table-top shot. This one is taken with Rodenstock Omegaron 50mm f3.5 enlarger lens. I find some resolution measurement for it from and from f4 it resolves 80 lpm from corner to corner. This one is taken wide open and cropped a little. I did another one on f11 and my old eyes do not see any difference in sharpness or contrast, just uglier bokeh.
This is taken from hand so any lack of sharpness you may found is my hand, not the lens :)
The Common Gallinule is quite beautiful and under-appreciated. It is anything but common in visual appearance. This one was found along a trail at the #1 attraction in Florida, Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland, Florida. They measure about 13 inches (33 cm) from beak-tip to tail-tip.
