Lark (brightly, but with an edge): “Because, if you don’t, I am going to call Georgie and regale her with every, single embarrassing moment from your babyhood to adulthood, including why we call you Digger and the real reason behind your chronic carpal tunnel syndrome when you were sixteen. And it wasn’t from playing video games, like you told everyone, either…Spanky.”
Wren: *chortles* “He believed in disciplining that monkey. That bad, bad monkey…”
Sparrow (deadpan): “He definitely didn’t spare his rod.”
Wren: “Nice one!” *fist bumps with Row*
Magpie (innocently): “Dear me! Is that why we were always running out of Kleenex? I just thought Hawk had a perpetual case of the sniffles…”
Hawk: *aghast, voice comes out strangled* “You wouldn’t!”
Lark: “Oh, I would. In fact, I’d revel in it. I’d wallow in it. I’d bask in it. The more I think about it, even if you do get Killian here, I may still do it, just to see how you like having your…*voice begins to rise* romantic life ruined by your CRAZY-ASS, MEDDLING SIBLING FROM HELL!”
Wren (gleefully): “That’s you! You’re the crazy-ass, Hawk. Just so’z you know.”
Hawk (stiffly): “We’ll talk about this later. After you’ve calmed down.”
Lark: “No. I’m done talking. You have my terms. I’ll give you a week to set up Killian’s visit. If you aren’t successful, then Georgie and I are going to have lunch. A looong, chatty lunch.
Magpie: “I will accompany you to that lunch, sweetling. I have things to add that would certainly tickle Georgie’s pickle.”
Wren: *arches an eyebrow at Hawk, diabolical glint in her eye* “Me, too.”
Sparrow: *grins, chirps* “Me, three.”
Hawk: *betrayed expression* “Row! I thought I’d at least get some support from you!”
Sparrow: “Baby bro, if the shoe was on the other foot, and Lark had done this to you, I’d be giving her the same hell. This isn’t a sister solidarity thing. This is a ‘you did a bad, bad thing’ thing.
Hawk (huffily): “Well, shit.”
Sparrow: *nods* “You’re up to your neck in it, alright…”
Wren: “Better get the shovel…”
Magpie: “Digger.”

Lark: “This actually helps make sense of some of the things Killian has said to me. He hates the idea of romantic love. He says it ruins lives. From his point of view, I guess it does. His father’s love for his mother sure ruined Killian’s.”
Sparrow: *nods* “And I know you love him, Lark, but are you prepared to deal with all of this? You’ve always been an unabashed idealist when it comes to love, and you’ve fallen for a man who’s been trained to distrust love practically from the cradle. Can you really be happy with him?”
Hawk: *walks back in to stand in front of Lark, feet spread wide, face grim* “My thoughts exactly. I didn’t get your hinges, Lark. I got halfway to the store and turned back around. I have something to say.”
Girls: *raise their eyebrows simultaneously at Hawk’s declaration*
Hawk: “I have serious reservations about you getting messed up with Killian. He’s a good guy, but he’s not the guy for you. So, when I was talking to him on the phone a few weeks after the wedding, and he mentioned you, I told him you were seeing someone—seriously seeing someone—and he should get lost.”
Lark: *shoots to her feet, screeches* “YOU WHAT?!”
Hawk: “Granted I didn’t know he’d talked you into bed at the time, or I would’ve hunted him down, busted his nose again, and then told him you were seeing someone.”
Wren: *mutters* “Uh, don’t think talking played much of a role in how he got her into bed, Hawk.”
Lark: *opens her mouth, clearly about pitch an epic hissy fit, then closes it abruptly, eyes narrowing*
Hawk: “I realize I’ve probably overstepped my brotherly bounds…”
Wren (incredulously): “Probably? Praaaah-Bo-Lee?”
Magpie (placidly): “I have unmanned fools for far less.”
Sparrow: *shakes head* “Bad Digger.”
Hawk: *glowers at his sisters, crossing his arms defiantly*
Lark: *exhales slowly, face eerily calm* “Okay, so here’s what’s gonna happen. You’re going to call Killian, tell him you were mistaken, and persuade him to visit Boston. He can stay with you. He rarely takes his vacation time, so I know he’s got some stored up.”
Hawk: *uncrosses arms, sneers* “And why in the hell would I do that?”

Magpie: *wraps her arms around Lark, as she sobs into her neck* “Does anyone else think he took that bombshell too calmly? I would have expected more overprotective outrage from Hawk.”
Wren: “I know, right? He looked more guilty than mad. Weird, since he practically broke Killian’s nose for kissing Lark, and this was much more than kissing. It was a homerun, baby.”
Magpie: *begins rocking Lark gently* “By the way, Row, your husband swears exquisitely in French. I could hear him in the background, when I called Ru with my lunch add-ons.”
Sparrow (dryly): “He hates driving in traffic, and that’s all you’ve had him doing for the last two hours, Mags. *scoots a chair closer, sits down, and places a hand on Lark’s knee* Tell me what happened.”
Wren: *drags up a stool and drops onto it, sending Lark remorseful looks all the while* “Would it help if I gave the boots back, in penitence?”
Lark: *extricates her face from Mags’ shoulder, still sniffling* “No, keep them. I know you love ‘em.”
Wren (contritely): “I broke the super sacred sister swear. I don’t deserve the most bitchin’ boots in the world.”
Lark: “You could make it up to me by taking over bathroom duty this week.”
Wren: *wrinkles nose* “I hate cleaning bathrooms.”
Lark: *stares at Wren, one last tear sliding down her face*
Wren: “Dammit. Okay. I’ll scrub the toilet this week.”
Sparrow: “I know you’ve had a crush on Killian for a long time, Lark, but I didn’t realize you two were actually, ah, acting on it.”
Lark: *slumps back in her chair, face morose* “It just…happened. He walked me back to my hotel room after the wedding reception. He kissed me at the door, and the next thing I knew it was morning and I was sore in all the right places.”
Magpie: “I always imagined Killian would be quite good at bed sport.”
Lark: “MVP. And though he didn’t make me any promises, and I didn’t ask him for any, I just…I just got the impression it was more to him than a one night bump-n-grind. *small shrug* What can I say? I was duped. Again. By the same guy. *covers face with her hands, overcome with embarrassment* He’s my kryptonite. My one glass of wine too many. My judgment completely goes to hell when I’m with him.”
Magpie: *strokes Lark’s hair away from her face* “Killian is a lot of things—brash, cheeky, ribald—but never cruel, especially not to our Lark. He has always been gentler with her than anyone. Something’s amiss.”
Wren: “Agreed. Nothing about this feels right.”
Sparrow: *sighs deeply* “Okay, I am not sure I’m doing the right thing here, because this isn’t really my tragedy to tell, but remember how Killian was always getting into fights when he was younger?”

Wren: *nods* “Yeah, he was always bashed up in some way or another, from all the brawling.”
Sparrow: “Well, he wasn’t actually getting into fights. Not the way you think, anyway. It was his dad. He was the one giving Lian those bruises.”
Wren: *eyes widen* “No way! I can’t believe that! Mr. McKay is the nicest guy you’d ever meet!
Sparrow: “He is…when he’s not drinking.”
Magpie: “In all the time we spent around him, I never saw him imbibe, Row. Are you sure?”
Sparrow: “He never drank in public. And, yes, I’m sure. I heard it straight from Killian, uh…kind of.”
Lark: *eyes rapt on Row’s face* “Explain, please.”
Sparrow: “It was during one of our summertime visits to the ranch. You guys had all gone down to the loch, and I was having one of my asthma flare-ups, so I was stuck inside reading a book. I heard a commotion in the kitchen and went to investigate.”
Magpie (affectionately): “Of course you did. You used to ‘investigate’ everything as a kid.”
Sparrow: *shrugs* “Playing Nancy Drew staved off the boredom while everyone else was out. Anyway, Uncle Liam and Fin were helping Killian into a chair. Apparently, his dad had gone on a bender the night before and messed Killian up pretty bad. Uncle Liam told Fin to take care of Killian while he went to ‘talk’ to Mr. McKay, but Killian wouldn’t have it. He said his dad had his reasons for what he’d done. He said he’d leave and never come back, if either Uncle Liam or Fin went after his dad.”
Wren: “What possible reason could there be for a dad wailing on his own son?”
Sparrow: “You know how we all thought Killian’s mother died in childbirth? When those two moved in next door to Fin and Emma, Killian was little more than a baby, and that’s what his dad told everyone.”
Wren: “Yeah.”
Sparrow: “It wasn’t true. She left them. Apparently, after she had Killian, she decided marriage and motherhood weren’t for her. She had been some sort of smalltime stage actress or dancer or…*motions with her hand* whatever and didn’t want to spend her time ‘wiping noses’ and ‘changing nappies’—her words—when she could be out making a name for herself.”
Lark: *presses a hand to her chest, voice tight* “That’s awful.”
Wren: *nods* “What. A. Bitch.”
Sparrow: “Killian’s dad really loved his mom. When she left, it kind of broke him. He held it together at first, trying to be good parent to his son. But time slowly began eroding his good intentions, and before long he was hitting the bottle, and Killian, pretty hard at night. As nice as Mr. McKay is when he’s sober, he’s ten times meaner than mean when he’s drunk. From what I gather, the things he said and did to Killian on those long, dark nights were…” *shakes head*
Lark (softly): “He blames Killian for her leaving, doesn’t he? And Killian believes it, too…that’s why he said his dad had his reasons for…*voice falters* for hitting him.”
Sparrow: *pats Lark’s hand consolingly* “Seems so.”

Wren: “I can’t believe that Uncle Liam would be okay with Killian staying in such a situation. Or Aunt Mary! She’d have taken her rolling pin to that bastard’s head, if he laid so much as another hot, whiskey-scented breath on Killian.”
Sparrow: “Killian loves his dad. When he’s not drunk, things are good between them, and he refuses to leave him, even now. Why do you think he’s stayed in Selkirk, when he’s always wanted to live in the city? He refuses to abandon his dad like his mother did.”
Magpie (skeptically): “Yes, well, even taking all of that into consideration, I can’t believe our aunt and uncle would just let the situation continue unchecked.”
Sparrow: “They didn’t. I don’t know exactly what kind of resolution they came to, because Aunt Mary found me skulking and shooed me away. However, after that day, Killian spent a lot of nights at the ranch, bunked down in the foreman’s quarters over the barn. Uncle Liam even gave him the key, so he could come and go whenever he pleased. And Uncle Liam taught Killian how to spar. I used to see them together in the back field, Uncle Liam wearing his old boxing gloves, showing Killian how to deflect and deliver blows.”
Wren: “I guess Uncle Liam did what he could to protect a boy that was hell-bent on staying in a bad situation. You guys know how stubborn Lian can be when he settles on something. Even if the authorities had come and dragged him out, he would’ve run at first chance, and ended up back with his dad…or dead in an alley somewhere.”
Magpie (slowly): “I suppose Uncle Liam thought that at least this way he could look out for Killian himself. He always did have a soft spot for the boy.”
Lark: *expression torn* “But do you think he made the right decision? Do you think he did enough?”
Magpie: *squeezes Lark’s shoulder* “I don’t know, baby. It’s a tough call, but our uncle has always been a cautious, thoughtful man. If this is the way he and Killian decided to handle the situation, then…*shrugs* I trust him.”
Sparrow (flatly): “I always thought the best outcome would be if Mr. McKay died. He’s like a cancer in Killian’s life, eating away at all that’s healthy and good. Who knows what will be left of Killian before it’s all said and done.”
Lark, Wren & Magpie: *expressions surprised by Sparrow’s uncharacteristically harsh declaration*
Wren: “Huh, not really what I’d expect to hear from a compassionate physician such as yourself.”
Sparrow (coolly): “I promised to do no harm; I didn’t promise not to think it. Besides, you didn’t see Lian after his father had gotten ahold of him. He couldn’t even see out of his left eye.”

Lark: “If you’re having problems, we can wait until Xavier and Satoru get back with lunch. Xav is pretty handy. I’m sure he can finish it up.”
Hawk: *scowls* “I can handle this on my own, Lark. I don’t need Row’s new mister breathing down my neck.”
Lark: *leans over, lays her head on Hawk’s shoulder* “Poor baby, are you having trouble not being the only manly-man of your generation in the family now? You’re still my favorite.”
Hawk: *drops a quick kiss on the top of Lark’s head* “Until you get married anyway.”
Lark: *expression turns melancholy* “I don’t think you have to worry about that happening anytime soon. So, what do you think of the new hubba-hubbas?”
Hawk: *shrugs* “Xavier’s a bellicose bastard, and Satoru’s most likely a stone-cold killer when pressed, but as long as they treat my girls with the respect and love they deserve, I like ‘em fine.”
Lark: “Uh-huh.”
Hawk: *stops screwing in a bracket to look at Lark, expression bemused* “But, seriously, what was Row thinking, marrying some guy she barely knows?”
Sparrow: *walks in, arms laden with handbags, drops them in front of an empty armoire* “Actually, I knew him fairly well when I married him. I think the problem is none of you knew him.”
Magpie: *follows closely behind Row* “We didn’t even know you were getting nudie canoodly with anyone, Row, let alone considering matrimony. Springing it on us like that was bad form, old girl.” *dangles a tiny purse above Row’s pile*
Sparrow: “First of all, you have no room to talk, since you got knocked up and quasi-eloped with a guy that used to be twins’ arch nemesis…*studies the small handbag suspended from Magpie’s hand* Secondly, you’re taking my advice not to overtax yourself a little too seriously, Mags. Pregnant women are quite hearty under normal circumstances. If they weren’t, humans would’ve died out centuries ago.”
