Monk's Dining Table

The dining table in my father's house, all silent now.

Decades ago, it was in use every evening with Dad sitting at the far end, Mum beside him on his left. That's my chair in the foreground. My two elder sisters would take the seats on the other side, out of the picture on the left.

This lovely table came with a bowl of bananas. I managed to misplace the bowl, but not the bananas, so the centerpiece you see is a big pile of yellow compensation for the missing piece.

Other than that, it's complete!

.. in the Pendean farmhouse at the Weald and Downland Living Museum in West Sussex, UK. The house came from Midhurst and dates from 1609.

The interior has been furnished with replica items to give an idea of the way it was originally used. The pottery has been based on Graffham ware which came from a 17th-century kiln at Graffham, a short distance from Pendean. The oak furniture, treen, basketware, textiles and ironwork have all been based on appropriate 16th and 17th-century originals.

The great Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris has survived revolutions and wars. Founded as a royal garden in the early seventeenth century, the Revolutionaries of 1793 decided to nationalise it. Down through the centuries French and other naturalists enriched the Museum with their finds. This morning my fingers wandered through the virtual herbarium, especially the Herbarium Guyanensi-Antillianum.

To my delight I found the very plant you see in the photo. Of course, the photo is brighter; the herbarium specimen is brownish and dried, but it does date from the 1780s! And you can see it for yourself on-line.

Just imagine: Louis-Claude Marie Richard (1754-1821), one of those adventurous servants of the French crown, was sent to French Guiana, in 1781 to set up a botanical garden for the eco-agricultural study of plants that might be useful for export to Europe. Once there though his plans were at first thwarted because the governor used the garden to grow vegetables for his dining table. Undaunted Richard began to collect natural specimens, one of which this member of the Melastomataceae family. He called it Aulacidium; later it went by Salpinga, and today it's Macrocentrum. The 'cristatum' is for the small tassels at the ends of the petals.

If you look at the herbarium specimen - which arrived in Paris in 1789 -, you will see that Richard notes that he collected it in the Kourou commune, today the home of ESA (the European Space Agency), and that in the Galibi, Kalina, Carib or Kari'nja language it's called 'Itoupou'. What it's called in a European language I don't know.

While seated at our dining table having dinner, we just happend to notice a large flock of small birds in a tree across the street. By the time I went out with my camera, some had already flown away. Nonetheless, I have counted 57 Cedar Waxwings in these two images.

And have brought me with them.

We have our own place now. :-)

I have an apt. in a pretty cul de sac complex. Multiple buildings with 4 apts. in each. I have a bottom one which gives me a nice patio outside.

Toward the end of moving day, my upstairs neighbor comes down to intoduce herself with some biscuits she made. A sweet little Hispanic woman who lives with her husband, and whose son also lives in another unit in the complex.

"You need anything ...... ANYTHEENG ..... you call, they come."

So, I'm living with boxes, and minions.

Not much furniture......yet.

I had no dining table or chairs, but the day after the move my friend calls and says there's a sidewalk furniture sale in our town and there's a table, with a leaf, and 6 chairs.

A beatiful set. heavy, solid sandy wood with inlaid satiny sheen tiles. For an insanely absurdly low price.

I bought it, asked if they delivered......yes.

When?

Now, if you want. I did, they did.

And a night stand for the bedroom (Lane.....very simple) for $25.00

So far so good. Really going good.

I'm still at my friend's house till I get the bed set up and locate the sheets and blankets.

Rent includes cable and high speed wi-fi internet.

Which of course didn't work in spite of my brother spending one hour on line with Time Warner.

So, the techie is coming on Tuesday.

I'm sure this is all enormously fascinating to you.

I'm pretty busy, and feel like the white rabbit......no time to say hello, goodbye......so this is a quick hello.

Forgive me if I can't get out to see too many of your well worth seeing photos.

Dining room of a Spanish colonial home in St. Augustine, Florida; now a museum.

My very first attempt at a modern dining room and chairs. The table support is of cocobolo and the chairs are of cocobolo and black plexiglas backs. Table is about 2 1/1 inches tall, by 6 inches by 3 inches. The supports are cut through the table top for accent. This is in 1:12 scale.

We moved the dining table next to the window. And new Be Yourself print finally on the wall! blogged here
