Storm damaged but still determined to shine

A rather tatty Peacock butterfly. Taken at Thoresby Hall.

This has one wild load and patina! When the chrome placard on the back end says "custom" ...it means it!

Happy Truck Thursday!

As you can see the bee is missing the tips of its wings. Possibly a bird tried to catch her and she escaped 😉 In any case, she was apparently too hot that day and had to take a break on my patio table 😃 This year there are more bees with us again and a greater number of species can also be observed. Have a peaceful MBT! everybody 😄

A long exposure, landscape image of the rocky coastline at Portknockie in Morayshire, Scotland, being pummelled by waves at sunset.

A slightly faster exposure than the one I uploaded the other day that better demonstrates the action.

No one gets through this life without getting a bit battered and tattered along the way, but you just gotta keep going.

New Years Resolution......Get out and about more instead of sticking to a 7 mile radius from my home. I used to get out and drive a bit to different locations to take photos and made the sunset more important.

……Trevose Head and The Bull (the pointed rock) getting a good wash this day! A long lens pressed firmly on a rock at Treyarnon in 70 MPH gusts and at a safe distance from those fierce waves! Fun to see (and hear!!!!) Alan:-)……

A little battered but still standing!

This butterfly landed on tiny flowers long enough for me to capture this image. I noticed that the lower wings were quite battered. There are so many dangers butterflies face in their short lives. Predators can try to grasp their wings or butterflies can bump into dense shrubbery to access flowers for nectar or to find host plants to lay their eggs. Any contact their wings make with another surface will cause scales to be rubbed off...and these do not regrow.

Weston-super-mare is not known for its extreme weather, but took the chance to check it when i saw winds of up to 40 miles per hour forecast coinciding with hight tide.

Under what could be described as a stormy sky, a dented and grimy 47337 approaches Mount Pleasant crossing in Southampton with an intermodal train for Southampton Maritime container terminal.

47337 carries the Freightliner 1995 livery, a modest variation on the two-tone grey railfreight livery of the 1990s but enlivened with red diaganol stripes.

Surprisingly the locomotive survived the great locomotive cull that occurred at the start of the 21st century. 47337 was rebuilt into 57602 and in 2019 is still operational, hauling sleeper trains between London and Penzance.

Another less obvious survivor is also visible: the wasteland that was Bevois Park sidings above the locomotive is back in railway use in 2019. The yard reopened as an aggregate terminal in December 2015.

A rusty HRT 1973 shoves a cut of lumber cars down the Battle Lumber spur. The crew will wait for an excavator with a claw attachment to load the cars with logs before they head back north to Lavonia, GA.

Fancied a flower for a change & found this one taken at the beginning of the month in Kensington Gardens.

Butterflies fight each other and some get very tatty. We watched a pair of Speckled Wood butterflies fight an arial battle for 14 minutes last summer.

……We are all feeling a bit battered at the moment as we all try to cope with a new way of living in these unprecedented times. This farm entrance has had a run-in with bigger machinery that seems to grow larger every year! Wishing you all the very best with your Lock-Down - Stay at HOME to stay safe and to NOT be a vehicle to the virus, Alan:-)

Alpine Groves Fishing Pier

Sunset view from the northeastern end of Waiheke Island into the southern parts of the Hauraki Gulf. The first island is Pakatoa which is privately owned and has been on the market for over 20 years. The next island down the chain is Rotoroa Island. It is owned by the Salvation Army and was used as a treatment centre for alcohol and drug addiction. The treatment facility was closed in 2005. In 2008, philanthropists Neal and Annette Plowman negotiated a 99-year lease from the Salvation Army and started to create a wildlife sanctuary. Rotoroa Island opened to the public for the first time in over 100 years in February 2011. After an extensive pest eradication programme, Rotoroa Island was pronounced predator free in 2014 and relocated threatened native bird species are thriving there again. Behind Rotoroa Island is privately owned Ponui Island. The hills behind Ponui Island are part of the Hunua Ranges on the mainland. They are an important catchment for Auckland's water supply which has become stretched by population growth and lengthening summer droughts.
