Puna de Atacama (also called Atacama Plateau), an arid high plateau (around 4000 m above sea level), in the Andes of northern Chile, nearby Bolivia and Argentina.
Questions and more questions are raised by this anthropomorphic (i.e. human traits given to a nonhuman figure) geoglyph found in the midst of Chile's Atacama Desert. Who carved it and why nobody knows, but at 119 mts. or 390 ft, it is the longest geoglyp in the world.

With its various stone and sand formations, carved by wind and water, El Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) looks somewhat similar to the surface of the moon. It is located west of San Pedro de Atacama in the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert.
Salar de Atacama (salt flat) is surrounded by mountains, has no drainage, and is one of the driest places on Earth. It is also the world’s largest and purest source of lithium. I was mesmerized by the salt flat’s subtle pastel colors, which were framed by the mountains and cloud filled azure blue sky.
In the last few days I've reviwed some of my Atacama shots from last year. This one is at Laguna Tebinquiche. One amazing thing about this lagoon is that each time you go there the salt formations are different so you always can be surprised with a new landscape ( always with the iconic Licancabur Volcano in the background).
The sculpture was constructed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level. Its exaggerated size is said to emphasize human vulnerability and helplessness.
The sculpture also was meant to convey emotions related to injustice, loneliness, sadness and torture.
The work has a base of iron and concrete, and stands 11 metres (36 ft) tall. Funded by Corporación Pro Antofagasta, a local booster organization, the sculpture was inaugurated on 28 March 1992.
It has since become a point of interest for tourists traveling Route 5, which forms part of the Pan-American Highway.
Salar de Talar is a salt flat that is part of a series or salt lakes located at the base of volcanoes in the Atacama Desert. In the distance is Cerros de Incahuasi.
The Atacama desert lies between the slopes of the Andes and the pacific ocean in Chile and Peru. It is estimated to cover over 100.000 square km and is the driest place on earth.
Night in Laguna Tuyajto (4000+ meters of altitude). The formations on the ground are made from salt. Illuminated by the moonlight.

Flamingos am Salar de Atacama, Chile. Im flachen Wasser der Lagune suchen sie nach Nahrung. Sie ernähren sich von kleinen Krebsen, die auch die rote Färbung des Gefieders bewirken.

In the photo, we can contemplate an incredible night panorama, where various celestial phenomena are visible: the Magellanic Clouds, the arc of the Milky Way, the zodiacal light, the Andromeda Galaxy, Jupiter and the airglow.
The Magellanic Clouds, which appear as bright spots in the left side of the image, are two satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and contain billions of stars, nebulas, and star clusters. The Milky Way arch, in turn, is the bright band that crosses the image, formed by the light of stars and interstellar gas and dust.
The zodiacal light, which extends diagonally in the image, is the diffuse band of light caused by the reflection of sunlight on particles of dust in interplanetary space. The Andromeda Galaxy, one of the closest to the Milky Way, appears as a diffuse spot and contains billions of stars, being an important object for the study of the formation and evolution of galaxies.
Finally, the airglow is the reddish band of light that extends along the horizon in the image, caused by the emission of light by oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the high Earth's atmosphere.
This image is an invitation to marvel at the immensity of the universe and the beauty of its celestial phenomena. It is definitely a vision that inspires us to contemplate the universe and to seek to understand more and more the complexity and grandeur of the cosmos.
