According to Guppy and Shepard (2001), its specific name phlaeas is said to be derived either from the Greek phlego, "to burn up" or from the Latin floreo, "to flourish".

Sie ist aber nicht auf Ägypten beschränkt, sondern im tropischen Afrika weit verbreitet. Sie kommt auch in Vorderasien, vor allem im Jemen, früher auch in Israel vor. In Südamerika wurde diese Blaue Seerose eingebürgert. Sie siedelt am Rand langsam fließender Flüsse und in den seichten Zonen stehender Gewässer.

The blue Egyptian water lily Nymphaea caerulea, also called blue lotus, Egyptian lotus or blue water lily, is a tropical floating leaf plant from the family of the lily family.

However, it is not limited to Egypt, but is widespread in tropical Africa. It also occurs in the Near East, especially in Yemen, and earlier also in Israel. This blue water lily was naturalized in South America. It settles on the edge of slowly flowing rivers and in the shallow zones of standing water.
