It rained - a lot. At least for Portland. It rained fairly hard all day, only letting up late in the day. I risked my camera to get some shots of these water-resistant birds continuing their activities.

San Francisco Square in the Historic Center of Quito.
From left to right, in the San Francisco building, you can see the doors of the Chapel of Cantuña, the Chapel of Villacísla, the main church, the convent and the museum.

The Church and its chapels (La Iglesia de San Francisco), which were considered sacred places.
Together, Church and Convent encompass three hectares including 13 cloisters (six of them major), three churches, and a large courtyard. In total, about 40,000 square meters of construction. San Francisco follows the classical typology of medieval monasteries. The main Church is the guiding axis and from there the cloister galleries extend: the refectory, the chapterhouse, and winery. These define a quadrangular courtyard, with the four respective pandas, or galleries: that of the chapter room, the refectory, the converts, and the mandatum. In addition to the basic dependencies of a convent, there were areas devoted to health care, education, crafts, a garden, and even a jail (to maintain strict discipline). The kitchen and dispensery operated in the cloister of services.

Walking from the Old Town’s narrow colonial streets into this open plaza reveals one of the finest sights in all of Ecuador: a sweeping cobblestone plaza backed by the mountainous backdrop of Volcán Pichincha, and the long, whitewashed walls and twin bell towers of Ecuador’s oldest church.

The Public Square (Plaza de San Francisco) was a purely urban space, demarcated and connected to various public activities (teaching, market, water supply).

Sad part of our History.
In pre-Hispanic Quito, the current lands of the Church and Convent of San Francisco were occupied by the royal palace of the Inca Huayna Cápac, before the advance of the armies commanded by the Spaniards from the south and the impossibility of defending the city the indigenous general Rumiñahui arranged the total destruction of it. In the city fire the palace was destroyed and buried under a huge amount of rubble and garbage. One of Rumiñahui's soldiers was the great-grandfather of the indigenous Cantuña, who as an eyewitness to the events had full knowledge of what was buried in the place. The construction of the church and convent of San Francisco began around 1537, just three years after the Spanish foundation of the city, with the completion of a provisional temple that was maintained until 1550, when construction of the current building began and which was completed around 1680. Although the building was officially inaugurated in 1705.
The change from Daylight Saving Time back to Standard Time has been a source of consternation for the cats as I try to shift their feeding times an hour later. It is expressed with counter stalking and dramatic licking of the scoop that I use to dole out portions of dry food--as if to say "I am on the brink of starvation".
I can not get them to understand the concept. :D

Guru is almost 8 months old, muscular and solid, but you can see the kitten in him still, peering into that dish towel.
Not the name of the Falls, just the position. Leaving both the top and the bottom of the falls seems to have focused attention on the mid ground. This area is typically part of the narrative and not the story itself. So, I placed it front and center, making it the story.
After all, this is the area of activity. While the top will feed the falls, and the bottom will exit the falls, the mid area is a concentration of activity.
At the right of the photo, I have included a three-deck motor vessel, useful for understanding or intuiting the proportions …..

The collared pratincole, scientifically known as Glareola pratincola, is an elegant bird belonging to the family Glareolidae. This species is known for its long, narrow wings and distinctive forked tail, which gives it a graceful appearance during flight.
My first encounter with collared pratincoles was a captivating experience dating back to the early eighties in the Ebro Delta in Spain. It was a mythical species for me, and I can still recall the excitement when I could observe the graceful flight of foraging collared pratincoles above my tent on the beach of Platja Eucalyptus where they hunt insects.
These birds breed in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, usually in sandy areas with little vegetation, such as coastal plains, riverbanks, and steppes. They migrate to sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia during the winter months.
Although they are generally not a threatened species, collared pratincoles are sometimes affected by habitat loss and disturbance of breeding areas due to human activities. Fortunately, they also benefit from protected natural areas and wetlands, where they can thrive.

CP 3002 leads the J21 south through Golden Valley as they approach the stop sign protected diamond that goes over the UP industrial lead. Still nice to see this GP38 roaming the rails.
This is the color version of one of the images from my black and white series 'Into The Cypress Swamps' that won me the overall title in the Travel Photographer of the Year competition a few months ago.
This one also has a more panoramic look, which was not possible for the bw version as that one was part of a series. It’s my favorite shot of the series, clearly because I’m in it. And the light isn’t too bad either.
The image was shot with a remote control - the camera was on a tripod that I carefully positioned in the water.

On January 22, solar reports warned of high solar activity with the presence of two important active regions associated with class M solar flares (www.spaceweather.com/glossary/flareclasses.html). In the image on the left you can see the configuration of the active regions on the Sun's disk. Active region 3559 (detail on the right, left in the complete image of the Sun), had rapid growth and crossed the solar disk in the course of the week. On January 23, this active region and 3561 (on the right in the image of the solar disk separated by around 500,000 km), erupted simultaneously, generating a "sympathetic solar flare", produced by a physical connection between both active regions, which caused shortwave radio blackouts in Australia and Indonesia (www.spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=23&mo...). The large active region 3559 had a "beta-gamma" class magnetic field and more than thirty sunspots, while 3561 evolved over the course of the week reaching about 100,000 km wide and twenty dark cores.

The image of the entire disk on the left was taken with a "Meade" 80/400 refractor telescope and the detail on the right, with an "Explore Scientific" 127, f/15 Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. In both cases a "Meade" 575 white light filter was used (remember not to expose your eyes to the Sun or photographic equipment without the appropriate filters), a Player One Neptune-M camera and a Player One IR685 filter.
