Red Legged Partridge - Alectoris Rufa aka French Partridge
The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a gamebird in the pheasant family.
It is sometimes known as French partridge, to distinguish it from the English or grey partridge.
This partridge breeds naturally in southwestern Europe (France, Iberia and northwest Italy). It has become naturalised in flat areas of England and Wales, where it was introduced as a game species, and has been seen breeding as far north as Cumbria and eastern Yorkshire and the western Isle of Man. It is replaced in southeastern Europe by the very similar rock partridge (Alectoris graeca). It is a non-migratory terrestrial species, which forms flocks outside the breeding season.
This species breeds on dry lowlands, such as farmland and open stony areas, laying its eggs in a ground nest.
The natural range of the red-legged partridge is France, Spain and Portugal. However, it was introduced from France to Great Britain in the 18th century, and has since become an important gamebird there. As it is a mediterranean species, it thrives in hot, dry areas with sandy soil. The ability to breed two clutches simultaneously has led to it being extensively reared in captivity, and released for shooting. The breeding of chukars (Alectoris chukar) and red-legged/chukar hybrids is prohibited, due to its impact on wild populations of red-legs. The red-legged partridge is believed to be in decline across its range.

I drove across Beverley Westwood yesterday an ancient area of pasture land on the edge of Beverley, were cattle still graze unfenced. In all my years of crossing the Westwood I have never seen it so carpeted in buttercups. I had time to stop and take a quick grab shot as you can see the sky was heavy with clouds a few minutes after taking the shot it was pouring with rain
Apart from a crop it is SOOC with no filters

I came across this abandoned schoolhouse near the town of Girard, I asked the property owner what year it was built and when did it close, 1893-1938, he didn’t say as to why, he let me go inside so I could grab a few photos.
Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus (M)
It breeds across Europe and much of temperate and northern Asia. Most birds migrate south in winter, but those in the milder south and west of the range are resident. It is common in reedbeds and also breeds in drier open areas such as moorland and cultivation. For example, it is a component of the purple moor grass and rush pastures, a type of Biodiversity Action Plan habitat in the UK. It occurs on poorly drained neutral and acidic soils of the lowlands and upland fringe.
The common reed bunting is a medium-sized bird, 13.5–15.5 cm long, with a small but sturdy seed-eater's bill. The male has a black head and throat, white neck collar and underparts, and a heavily streaked brown back. The female is much duller, with a streaked brown head, and is more streaked below.
Despite its name, the Reed Bunting breeds across a range of habitats from reedbeds and conifer plantations to hedgerows and arable crops like oil seed rape. During the non-breeding season, this species is dependent upon weed seeds, and as such, Reed Buntings would have joined other species in winter flocks on farmland stubbles. The decline of this species matches that of other farmland species like Tree Sparrow and Linnet. The increasing winter use of gardens during the 1980s probably reflects the decrease in availability of winter food.

The Damrak houses first introduced me to the Dutch word gezellig (meaning cozy or homely) I was always wandering in from the train station after dark and I would constantly stop and stare at these houses thinking it felt like an incandescent oasis in a city of fluorescents, warming the night and the Damrak with its soft glow.
When you walk by during the day usually things are shut tight against the throngs of tourists walking back and forth from the central station but at night when the crowds have dissipated the curtains open and the world seems to be welcome to become a witness to the nocturnal activities of the residents.
The Damrak historically was originally part of the Amstel river below the Dam that gave Amsterdam its name, Rak means a straight stretch or place to gain speed, so the Damrak was actually the straight piece of river below the Dam across the Amstel where sailors would pick up some speed on their home stretch to the port of Amsterdam.

The Ribblesdale railway viaduct on a grey, wet day. The viaduct, across Ribblesdale (known as the Ribblesdale Viaduct and Batty Moss Viaduct) was built in 1875, and is 1320 ft long, 104 ft high. It was closed to rail traffic for a while, but has now reopened, though all trains seems to tip-toe across.
Wide angle landscape shots of the dales and the viaduct were just not working on the day I was there with so much low cloud, rain and mist around...it allowed for some more moody compositions though!
I was going back through my bug photos from last year, looking for a good one to add tonight since there's not much new happening out in nature right now here in the local area, when I came across this photo of a white-tailed deer fawn that I found out in the forest last spring while photographing insects. I'd forgotten that I even took the photo since I download all my bug photos into special files and wait until winter to look at them and then try to figure out what I found. I'm positive that I photographed this fawn that stood up at my feet with a macro lens

Amazing cloud formation just after sunrise. The sea was calm and the tide was coming in. Every year the shingle is built up on the beach as a sea defence but you can see the channels in the shingle where the sea has already flooded in during recent stormy weather. The wooden breakers are also a sea defence. Eastbourne, UK
Had there been no Covid-19 virus and had I not ruptured my left Achilles (now on the mend) I would be flying to Vienna today to start a 19 days trip around this lovely country. I plan to do the same in 2021. This was taken on a day out from Salzburg.
Across the lane from Hailes Abbey in Gloucestershire is Hailes Church, a small country chapel that predates its more famous neighbour by a half-century. The small Norman church stands on the edge of a farm field, directly opposite the ruins of the Cistercian abbey. Hailes Church was begun around 1135 and is famous for its wonderful collection of medieval wall paintings.
