Mitchell railway station was opened on the 17th of January 1885 as part of a rail link to service western Queensland. Buildings of heritage significance on the site include the passenger station, goods shed and station master's house. The station complex reflects the historic role of Mitchell as a regional centre in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It provides good examples of typical railway architecture from this period in south western Queensland.
In Australia, government fostered the development of railways as a means of developing the country and providing social benefits. It was argued that rail would reduce freight costs and save travel time for passengers. An added incentive for rail development in Queensland was the very poor state of the roads. In wet weather especially, this hampered the transport of freight. Railway development became the province of government because of the doubtful economics of building and operating a rail service for the widely distributed, sparse population of rural Queensland. In most cases the capital costs were high in relation to the potential revenue likely to be raised from passengers and freight. These economies imposed a natural limit on the expansion of railways into remote areas.
The government initially gave priority to developing a railway west of Brisbane. As well as providing graziers and farmers with a more efficient transport link to the coast, railways were seen as a key to encouraging closer settlement west of the Great Dividing Range. The first section of rail, opened on the 31st of July 1865, was between Ipswich and Bigg's Camp, 34 kilometres west of Ipswich. By February 1868 the rail was extended to Dalby in the Darling Downs. With a railhead provided for the squatters in this region, extensions further west ceased while the railway was developed elsewhere. A line south to Warwick was opened in 1871 and in August 1872, approval was granted to extend the railway in Central Queensland and to start an Ipswich to Brisbane rail link. It was 1876 before construction of the railway westward from Dalby recommenced. The rail was opened to Roma in 1880 and to East Mitchell in 1883.
The region surrounding Mitchell was explored by Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell in the mid-1840s. The explorer spoke highly of the country's pastoral potential and within two years, squatters had occupied runs in the vicinity of Mount Abundance to the south of the present township of Mitchell. Eurella, Amby Downs, Mitchell Downs and Forest Vale, four pastoral runs in the vicinity of Mitchell, are believed have been taken up in 1861. The head station for Mitchell Downs was located on the site of the present town of Mitchell on the banks of the Maranoa River.
Mitchell Downs homestead was located on the western side of the Maranoa River, near the place where teamsters from Charleville, Bollon, and Saint George crossed the river and was the logical site for a settlement to develop. One of the first settlers in the region recalls that after the Mitchell Downs homestead was damaged by flood waters in 1864 and had been moved to a nearby location, the remains of the original homestead were converted into the Maranoa Hotel. This was the township's first building. In 1876, Mitchell became a stage on the Cobb and Co. route from Roma to Charleville. Coach routes opened from Mitchell to Bollon in 1900 and to Saint George in 1905.
The rail reached the eastern bank of the Maranoa River across from the township of Mitchell in 1883. The river formed a natural barrier and until a bridge was constructed, a temporary terminus at East Mitchell was established. This was opened on 8the of October 1883. A public holiday was proclaimed and a free 'excursion train' ran from Roma to the new terminus, but no formal ceremony was held owing to the lack of notice given of the opening (Western Star October the 10th 1883). With the opening of the East Mitchell terminus, the departure point of the Roma to Charleville Cobb and Co. route was moved to Mitchell. Coaches ran to Charleville three times weekly.
The Maranoa River bridge was completed on 10 September 1884 as part of the contract for the next rail extension. The bridge extends almost 210 metres and is made up of three spans on concrete piers with timber approaches. It is reputedly one of a small number of rail bridges built with continuous girders. Contracts were let in 1884 for a goods shed (still partly extant), engine and carriage sheds, booking offices, station master's house (still extant), cattle and sheep yards and three gate keeper's cottages at the site of the planned new terminus in Mitchell.
On the 17th of January 1885, the rail link between East Mitchell and Mitchell was opened by a ministerial party, which included Hon. W Miles (Minister for Works), Hon. CB Dutton (Minister for Lands), F Curnow (acting Commissioner for Railways), JF Thallon (Queensland Rail Traffic Manager), P McLean (Land Commissioner in Chief) and C Adam (Railway Traffic Inspector). At this time, the main station building and platform was almost complete and the goods shed, carriage shed and engine shed were in the process of construction.
The opening of the rail to Mitchell brought increased commerce to the township due to its role as the western rail terminus. Outward bound wool statistics for stations during the period when the western railway was being built shows that as the rail arrived at a township, that centre enjoyed a brief period of high goods traffic until the rail moved further west. Thus, in 1882, the year before the opening of the East Mitchell Station, Roma Railway Station recorded the highest quantity of outward bound wool on the Western Line at 6,687 bales. In 1884, this figure dropped to 1,308 bales with the new terminus at East Mitchell recording 9,545, the largest quantity on the western line. As the rail opened to points west of Mitchell, however, traffic through the station reduced. After the opening of Morven Station in March 1887, wool leaving Mitchell Station dwindled to 774 bales.
The extant passenger station is the third to occupy the site. The first building was destroyed by fire on the night of 13 December 1887. It was replaced by a shelter shed comprising a waiting area, office and lavatory. In about 1901, refreshment rooms (no longer extant) were erected comprising a bar, dining room and semi-detached kitchen. The second shelter shed burnt down on the 29th of June 1933. The present station was erected probably later that year utilising a shelter shed from Evanslea Station and a storeroom from Silverwood Station. The architectural style of the buildings suggests that probably they date to no earlier than 1910.
The core of the goods shed appears to date to 1884 - 1885. Originally 101 feet (30.8 metres) long, the shed was quite large and this is indicative of the high goods traffic passing through the station initially. In February 1963, approval was given to reduce the length of the shed to 45 feet (13.7 metres). Material recovered was used for repairs to the building.
A contract for the station master's house, still extant on the site, was let on the 19th of July 1884 to Warren Brothers, the well-known building and architectural firm based in Roma and was likely completed by the time the Mitchell Station was opened in January 1885. Warren Brothers erected many government buildings in the Roma district including the Roads and Lands Office at Roma (1878), the Court House at Surat (1878 - 1879) and the railway buildings at Roma (1880). The Mitchell station master's house may be a prototype for a later Queensland Rail standard design since its design is similar to Queensland Rail's architectural standard for first class station masters' houses in 1889. By as early as 1894 this standard had changed and in 1917 the Mitchell residence was recorded as a third class station master's house.
The architect responsible for the standard design for first class station master's houses was Henrik Hansen. Born in Denmark in 1843, Hansen had emigrated to Australia by 1877, when he was practising as an architect in Maryborough. Between October 1877 and 1904, he was employed in the Chief Engineers Branch of the Queensland Railway's Southern Division. In this position, he was responsible for the design of many standard railway buildings including station masters' residences.
Minor modifications to the station master's residence in the 20th century included the removal of the original brick chimney and replacement with an iron stove recess 1945 and extension of the awning over the northeastern side verandah in 1963.
After Charleville Station opened in 1888, the Carriage and Engine sheds at Mitchell Station were moved to Charleville. Of these two buildings, the engine shed remained intact until 2003 when it was blown down in a severe windstorm.
Since the station was first opened in 1885, accommodation for train and maintenance crews has been erected on the site. In the 1950s, train crews were quartered at Mitchell to relieve crews travelling from Roma and Charleville. A modified goods shed and two fettlers' cottages were moved to the site to accommodate crews. By 1961 there were 12 residential buildings on the site providing accommodation for maintenance and operations staff. Currently, there are only three residential buildings, comprising the station master's house and two more recent houses.

The quest for pinpointing the exact location of the Biblical Garden of Eden and the four rivers almost rivals the quest for the location of fabled Atlantis. And the theories that abound are almost as numerous as the interpretations of the seven days of Genesis. Before tackling this question let's review what is written in Genesis about the four rivers:
10And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

The Bible says that a single river flowed "out" of Eden and then does something that most rivers DO NOT do; specifically, split into four separate "heads" or rivers that flowed downstream, all fed from a common single river source. Almost all rivers start from a single source or are fed by multiple sources (tributaries). For example, the Ohio River actually begins where two rivers (the Monongahela and Allegheny) flow together at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The Ohio River terminates when it flows into the Mississippi river as one of that river's many tributaries. So the names of rivers are an arbitrary thing, usually denoting only a portion of a greater complex stream system, with one stream flowing into another, which in-turn, may flow into yet another. This pattern of rivers, as observed in nature, is just the opposite of what the Bible describes about the rivers of Eden.
For that reason, nobody has been able to look at modern maps of the regions mentioned in Genesis and figure out exactly where the Garden of Eden was, at least by the present topography of the lands of the Middle East. Only one river of the four, the Euphrates, is known by the same name in modern times. It presently originates in the mountains of Turkey and terminates when it merges with the Tigris River near the Iraq/Kuwait border region. Many have speculated that the Tigris is the river Hiddekel. This has led to speculation that the Garden of Eden was located somewhere in Turkey. This is assumed because the present headwaters of the Euphrates River originate in Turkey, as do the headwaters of the Tigris.
Others have proposed that the other end of the Euphrates River, where it meets the Tigris, may be the true location. This requires interpreting the Tigris river as one of the other three (the Hiddekel), then interpreting a tributary confluence of rivers as a river "head" (which it is not), and then locating at least two more rivers (or old river beds) as the other missing two. Having done so, they then claim that the Garden of Eden was near present day Kuwait. This is a convenient solution, but not one supported by the literal wording of the Bible or the geological and geographical realities of what a river "head" means, i.e. headwaters or source of origin. You will notice that the present day headwaters of both the Tigris and Euphrates rivers originate in Turkey very close to each other in mountainous terrain. Logically, one would assume that if two of the rivers started there, the other two must have done so, as well, if Turkey was the location of Eden. Neither the Pison nor Gihon rivers are ever mentioned again in the Bible. However, the Hiddekel River is:
"And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;"

This reference by the prophet Daniel comes from a vision he had while with the children of Israel during the Babylonian Captivity. This would put Daniel somewhere in the area of present-day Iraq and would make the present-day Tigris river a fairly good candidate for the "Hiddekel" river spoken of by the prophet, as it is the only other great river known in that region today. But the Bible says that this river "that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria" and a historical map of the location of Assyria, shows that the Tigris actually goes southeastward. Keep in mind that the geographical area known as "Assyria" is not so easy to pin down. Although the Assyrian Empire was centered near Nineveh, the actual empire also extended into what is also present-day Syria and Palestine. However, lacking a better candidate, and knowing that the prophet Daniel was in that geographical area at the time of his visions, the Tigris appears to be the best possible modern-day candidate for the Hiddekel River. We now must search out the probable locations of the other two rivers. It is here that the theories that the Garden of Eden was either in Turkey or Kuwait starts to lose credibility.
First, let's identify the geographical region of the Pison river. The Bible says: "Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold" and gives us two good clues. There is a recently discovered "Fossil River" that runs from the western mountains of Saudi Arabia towards Kuwait. This old river course is now nothing more than a dry riverbed. It's old path was detected by satellite imaging. Many have speculated that this may be the ancient Pison, as it has been dry since about 3,500 to 2,000 BC. Although Saudi Arabia could marginally qualify for the land of Havilah, the fossil riverbed that flows across it had its origins in the mountains bordering the eastern side of the present day Red Sea, south of Israel. It should be pointed out that those mountains are mirrored by another range of mountains on the western side of the Red Sea. The Red Sea is a tectonic spreading zone and part of the Great Rift system that runs from northward in Turkey, down to the Dead Sea, along the length of the Red Sea and then southward deep into the African continent. Obviously, when that mountain range was split by the Rift the source waters of the proposed Pison river would have dried up.
But this proposed river path may be somewhat of a "red-herring" because it does not seem to naturally "fit" the overall pattern. An even better fit may be for the river to have flowed down into what today is the Gulf of Aden south of present day Yemen (southern tip of Arabia). Yemen has both gold and onyx, which matches: "...the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone... " and the eastward trending fault branch from the Afar triangle, which is south of Yemen would have been a natural riverbed in the days prior to Noah's flood (when sea levels were lower than today). If this fossil-river (referred to as the 'Kuwait river') was indeed the Pison River, it does not correspond with the present-day headwater source of the Euphrates or Tigris up in Turkey. What's more, the geography of the last remaining river, the Gihon, further complicates the problem.
The Gihon is spoken of as: "Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia" which is the African land area west of the Red Sea and southward. Of course, the political boundaries of what we call Ethiopia today were certainly different in Biblical times, but the general area is correct. And if a river formerly flowed down what is now the Red Sea basin and southward into Africa at the Afar Triangle, it would certainly fit the description of a river that "compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia." (Genesis 2:13)
All four of these rivers have one thing in common: All are connected to the Great Rift system. And that is the key to the mystery. Two of the rivers of Eden were to the north of Israel, the active remnants of which presently originate out of Turkey to the north. The two other rivers of Eden were to the south of Israel. The geographical "center" of these four points of flow is neither Turkey nor Kuwait; the center is somewhere near the general region of present day Israel and Jordan.
The Bible itself lends further credence to Israel (or someplace nearby) as the location of the Garden of Eden. If you run the name "Eden" through a search of the Bible, among several references the following ones provide some insightful clues:
"3Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs. 4The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers unto all the trees of the field. 5Therefore his height was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth. 6All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations. 7Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters. 8The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chesnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. 9I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him."
(Ezekiel 31:3-9 KJV). In this passage the Bible says that the Assyrian was in Lebanon. Spiritually speaking, the "trees" in this passage refer to men and leaders. Cedar trees are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible as references to Lebanon (Judges 9:15, Psalms 29:5 & 104:16, Song of Solomon 5:15, Isaiah 2:13, Jeremiah 22:23 and more).
Notice also in the last of the passage that the Spirit associates the trees with "Eden" that "were in the Garden of God." Lebanon, although not a part of modern political Israel, was a part of the Biblical lands ruled by the Kings of Israel in times past. From this we can infer that the Garden and the source of the rivers of the Garden was somewhere close to the land of Lebanon.
Assuming this postulation is correct, that the source of the four rivers was somewhere near Lebanon, and that the rivers all had a connection to the Great Rift system, the interconnection of the river systems would need to be somewhat like the map below: What roughly emerges, when all four rivers are connected to trace of the Great Rift fault system, is a complex river network emerging from a common point of origin that flows both north and south, with each north and south extension splitting into two separate streams, for a total of four rivers. That adds up to four separate heads.
But the so-called Kuwait River, which has been proposed as the lost river Pison, still does not seem to match well with the common denominator of the others - the Great Rift and branching fault systems. Based on the description of its path in the Bible which says, "compasseth the whole land of Havilah" and knowing from the geology of present day Yemen that onyx can be found there, then this part of the verse, "where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone" suggests an alternate path for the River Pison, to the south of Yemen, as we mentioned previously. So, When all factors are considered (Bible text and geology), I believe the paths indicated by the dotted lines on the large map below are the probable paths where the four-rivers of the Garden of Eden actually flowed. And a southern path around Yemen puts the fourth river squarely into the basin of the Great Rift system, flowing east from the upwelling Afar Triangle. These paths meet the requirements of the Biblical text because the single river water source ("head"), originating from high ground somewhere in or near present day Israel, would have originated or flowed down into the Rift Valley basin. Those waters would then need to have been diverted to flow both north and south along the path of the Rift zone, with both the north and south forks each splitting a second time when intercepting other fault zones, to produce a total of four rivers, with four heads.
The chart below is an overview of the known fault systems across the Middle East region (south of the Red Sea excluded): Keep in mind that the course of rivers around and through the vicinity of the Great Rift fault system may have changed or dried up because of block faulting all along the Rift zone since the times of Adam and Eve. Certainly Horst and Graben faulting along the Rift could, and would, change the surface topography. Horst and Graben faulting is defined as "elongate fault blocks of the Earth's crust that have been raised and lowered, respectively, relative to their surrounding areas as a direct effect of faulting. Horsts and Grabens may range in size from blocks a few centimeters wide to tens of kilometers wide; the vertical movement may be up to several thousand feet." But when did this happen? The most likely time frame would be in the years immediately following Noah's Flood. Keep in mind that the Bible says there was a significant geologic event that happened 101 years after Noah's Flood - The "Earth was divided" (see: Genesis 10:25 & 1 Chronicles 1:19). The Bible also describes what was probably tectonic/volcanic activity in the Rift valley in Abraham's days (the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah - See Genesis 19:28).
Imaging of the Dead Sea indicates that, at one time, the river bed of what is now the Jordan River once flowed across the land surface that is now at the bottom of the Dead Sea. This further suggests that there was Horst and Graben faulting at the southern end of the present Dead Sea, which abruptly terminated the former flow of that river southward and formed the current Dead Sea. And that stream was probably the feeder channel to the ancient Gihon and Pison Rivers, which ran down the floor of what is now the Red Sea into Ethiopia and through the Rift basin south from the Afar Triangle. Supporting coincidental evidence for this is the fact that fish species down in the African Rift valley river and lake systems are very similar to those found in the Jordan River system:
Note: The aquatic life of the African lakes and rivers belongs to the so-called Ethiopian zoogeographical region. According to Annandale, the explanation of the Ethiopian affinity of the fish fauna of the Jordan is that the Jordan formed at one time merely part of a river system that ran down the Great Rift Valley. The Jordan was one branch of this huge river system, the chain of lakes in East Africa represents the other; and together they opened into the Indian Ocean. See R. Now, returning to the general area of Lebanon as the Biblical location of the Garden of Eden and the water source for the four rivers, let us take a look at the present-day geology and topography of that area. This map shows a great deal of block faulting in the area of Lebanon just north of modern-day Israel. You will note from the topographical relief and surface features that, had waters once flowed north out of Lebanon, they would naturally flow into the Euphrates Fault system river basin. So, at the time of the Garden of Eden, the main headwaters of the Euphrates could have come from that direction. If the water flow at that time continued northward along the path of the Great Rift, it would intersect the present-day Tigris river basin system, as well. That would mean that the present-day head-waters of both rivers, that currently originate in Turkey, may have in older times been only tributaries to both rivers, not the main water source. The prominent bodies of water along the Rift zone in this photo are the Dead Sea (bottom) and Sea of Galilee (top). They are connected by the Jordan River which flows south. Before the Earth was divided by the Rift, the elevations along Great Rift floor were certainly different. What you are looking at in the satellite photo is "ground zero" of what was once the Garden of Eden.
Here is another important point to remember. The Bible says that the river flowed out of Eden, but nowhere does the Bible give a geographical size for what constituted the actual area of Eden. Therefore, the actual source of the waters could have been south of Lebanon. More specifically, those waters could have originated in or near Jerusalem in present-day Israel, or even up welled from a massive spring under the sea of Tiberius, but the river originated here and, from here, branched out north and south along the Rift, then branched out again further north and further south.
Evidence for the Israel/Lebanon region as the location of Eden and the lost river finds considerable support in the Bible, in the fact that God considers the land of Israel as His Holy land. It was upon one of the mountains in the "land of Moriah" (Genesis 22:2) where Abraham was told to sacrifice his son (a type of the Lord's sacrifice of Jesus). Solomon was told to build the Temple "at Jerusalem in mount Moriah" (2 Chronicles 3:1) and Jerusalem was where the Lord Jesus was actually crucified. By extension, we can assume that when God sacrificed an animal to cover Adam and Eve with its skin (Genesis 3:21), that animal was a Lamb (Revelation 13:8). Therefore, we can be certain from the typology that Adam and Eve, and the center of the Garden of God, were somewhere at or very near geographical Jerusalem. And so was the source of the River.
Now, what exactly do those spiritual realities have to do with the location of the river of Eden? In the future, when the Lord Jesus Christ establishes His Kingdom and Righteous Temple in Jerusalem, the Bible speaks of a river flowing from below the Temple. The prophet Ezekiel spoke of seeing this in a vision:
1Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. 2Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side. 3And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. 4Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins. 5Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over. 6And he said unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river. 7Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. 8Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. 9And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh. 10And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even unto Eneglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many. 11But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt. 12And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.

The above passage is speaking of the future days on the one-thousand year reign of the Lord Jesus Christ in Jerusalem (Revelation 20), and a reconfiguration of the land after the regeneration of the heavens and Earth following the Great Tribulation (see: Jeremiah 4:23-28 & Isaiah 65:17-25). At that time, once again, the land will be like the Garden of Eden (but not quite exactly, from a geological viewpoint).
What Ezekiel wrote about (above) should not be confused with the eternal future time of the new heaven and Earth that comes after the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11).
"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband."

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

The difference between the earthly Jerusalem of Ezekiel's description, with a river flowing out from below the house of the Lord (the Temple) during the one-thousand-year reign of the Lord (Revelation 20), and the river flowing out from the "throne of God" in the New Jerusalem that John wrote about, is that there is NO TEMPLE in the New Jerusalem.
"And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it."
(Revelation 21:22 KJV)
The Jerusalem and river described in Ezekiel 47:1-12, and the New Jerusalem and river described in Revelation 22:1-2, are two different places in two different times, though very similar in their descriptions, yet different in important ways.
In summary: The Bible tends to indicate that the river from the Garden of Eden originated in the Holy Land, and from there became four heads. A forensic study of the region's geology tends to support the theory over the alternatively proposed locations of Turkey or Kuwait. What we have not shown is a geologic model for the source of these waters originating from the area of Jerusalem. Keep in mind, however, that Jerusalem sits just west of the Great Rift Valley. It is quite possible that the legendary river of Eden originated from a massive artesian aquifer, the source of which has long since been disrupted by block faulting along the Rift. We know for a scientific fact that there is a considerable amount of "fossil" water under the Middle East in the deep-rock sandstone aquifers of the region such as the Nubian sandstone aquifers and equivalent formations.
Also keep in mind that in the days of Adam and Eve a "mist" went up and watered the face of the Earth within the Garden (Genesis 2:6). Fountains of waters (underground waters under pressure gushing upwards) would certainly be a logical source for the generation of such a mist and would be a logical feed-source for such a river. Certainly, we cannot exclude this possibility. Although the modern-day geology and topography of the Middle-East does not readily reveal the exact location of the Garden of Eden and the four rivers source, guidance by faith from the Holy Bible and a forensic study of the region's geology and topography reveals the matter. The available data appears to suggest that present-day Israel was the central location of the Garden of Eden.

The role of the Western European Union and its relations with the European Union and NATO
Introduction 1.
WEU Member States agree on the need to develop a genuine European security and defence identity and a greater European responsibility on defence matters.
This identity will be pursued through a gradual process involving successive phases. WEU will form an integral part ofthe process of the development of the European Union and will enhance its contribution to solidarity within the Atlantic Alliance.
WEU Member States agree to strengthen the role of WEU, in the longer term perspective of a common defence, compatible with that of the Atlantic Alliance.
2. WEU will be developed as the defence component of the European Union and as a means to strengthen the European pillar of the Atlantic Alliance.
To this end, it will formulate common European defencepolicy and carry forward its concrete implementation through the further development of its own operational role. WEU Member States take note of Article J.4 relating to the common foreign and security policy of the Treaty on European Union which reads as follows:"
1. The common foreign and security policy shall include all questions related to the security of the Union, including the eventual framing of a common defence policy, which might in time lead to a common defence.
2. The union requests the Western Union (WEU), which is an integral part of the development of the Union, to elaborate and implement decisions and actions of the Union which have defence implications. The Council shall, in agreement with the institutions of the WEU, adopt the necessary practical arrangements.
3. Issues having defence implications dealt with under this Article shall not be subject to the procedures set out in Article J.3.
4. The policy of the Union in accordance with this Article shall not prejudice the specific character of the security and defence policy of certain Member States and shall respect the obligations of certain Member States under the North Atlantic Treaty and be compatible with the common security and defence policy established within that framework.
5. The provisions of this Article shall not prevent the development of closer cooperation between two or more Member States on a bilateral level, in the framework of the WEU and the Atlantic Alliance, provided such cooperation does not run counter to or impede that provided for in this Title.
6. With a view to furthering the objective of this Treaty, and having in view the date of 1998 in the context of Article XII of the Brussels Treaty, the provisions of this Article may be revised as provided for in Article N(2) on the basis of a report to be presented in 1996 by the Council to the European Council, which shall include an evaluation of the progress made and the experience gained until then."A. WEU's relations with European Union3.
The objective is to build up WEU in stages as the defence component of the European Union.
To this end, WEU is prepared, at the request of the European Union, to elaborate and implement decisions and actions of the Union which have defence implications.
To this end, WEU will take the following measures to develop a close working relationship with the Union:-
as appropriate, synchronization of the dates and venues of meetings and harmonization of working methods;-
establishment of close cooperation between the Council andSecretariat-General of WEU on the one hand, and the Council of the Union and General Secretariat of the Council on the other;- consideration of the harmonization of the sequence and duration of the respective Presidencies;-
arranging for appropriate modalities so as to ensure that theCommission of the European Communities is regularly informed and, as appropriate, consulted on WEU activities in accordance with the role of the Commission in the common foreign and security policy as defined in the Treaty on European Union;-
encouragement of closer cooperation between the Parliamentary Assembly of WEU and the European Parliament.The WEU Council shall, in agreement with the competent bodies of the European Union, adopt the necessary practical arrangements.B.
WEU's relations with the Atlantic Alliance
4. The objective is to develop WEU as a means to strengthen the European pillar of the Atlantic Alliance.
Accordingly WEU is prepared to develop further the close working links between WEU and the Alliance and to strengthen the role, responsibilities and contributions of WEU Member States in the Alliance.
This will be undertaken on the basis of the necessary transparency and complementarity between the emerging European security and defence identity and the Alliance.
WEU will act in conformity with the positions adopted in the Atlantic Alliance.-
WEU Member States will intensify their coordination on Alliance issues which represent an important common interest with the aim of introducing joint positions agreed in WEU into the process of consultation in the Alliance which will remain the essential forum for consultation among its members and the venue for agreement on policies bearing on the security and defence commitments of Allies under the North Atlantic Treaty.-
Where necessary, dates and venues of meetings will be synchronized and working methods harmonized.-
Close cooperation will be established between the Secretariats- General of WEU and NATO.C. Operational role of WEU5.
WEU's operational role will be strengthened by examining and defining appropriate missions, structures and means, covering in particular:-
WEU planning cell;-
closer military cooperation complementary to the Alliance in particular in the fields of logistics, transport, training and strategic surveillance;-
meetings of WEU Chiefs of Defence Staff;- military units answerable to WEU.Other proposals will be examined further including:-
enhanced cooperation in the field of armaments with the aim of creating a European armaments agency;-development of the WEU Institute into a European Security and Defence Academy.
Arrangements aimed at giving WEU a stronger operational role will be fully compatible with the military dispositions necessary to ensure the collective defence of all Allies. D. Other measures
6. As a consequence of the measures set out above, and in order to facilitate the strengthening of WEU's role, the seat of the WEU Council and Secretariat will be transferred to Brussels.
7. Representation of the WEU Council must be such that the Council is able to exercise its functions continuously in accordance with Article VIII of the modified Brussels Treaty.
Member States may draw on a double-hatting formula, to be worked out, consisting of their representatives to the Alliance and to the European Union.
8. WEU notes that, in accordance with the provisions of Article J.4(6) concerning the common foreign and security policy of the Treaty on European Union, the Union will decide to review the provisions of this Article with a view to furthering the objective to be set by it in accordance with the procedure defined.
The WEU will re-examine the present provisions in 1996.
This re-examination will take account of the progress and experience acquired and will extend to relations between WEU and the Atlantic Alliance.II.
DECLARATIONby Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, theNetherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which are members of the Western European Union.
"The Member States of WEU welcome the development of the European security and defence identity.

Chapter I: General ArticlesArticle
1The European Union, hereafter called "Union", is formed by the following Member States, Belgique-België-Belgien, Danmark, Deutschland, Ellas, España, France, Ireland, Italia, Luxembourg, Nederland, Österreich, Portugal, Suomi-Finland, Sverige, United-Kingdom of Great-Britain and NorthernIreland.Article
2The Union derives all its powers from the shared sovereignty of its Member States and the citizens of the Union.Article
3No citizen of the Union can be discriminated against on the basis of one's beliefs, religion, race, nationality, language, gender or sexual orientation.
Article 4A citizen of the Union is a person holding the citizenship of a Member State.
Article 5 Any citizen of the Union, any permanent legal resident or any Member State has the right to petition the Court of Justice to hear its case under European law.
Article 6All citizens of the Union, which have reached the age of 18, have the right to vote and stand for office in all elections in their State of residence in the same way as citizens of that State.
Article 7Any official language in a Member State is an official language of the Union.
The citizens of the Union may use these languages in all communication with the institutions of the Union.
The Union flag is described as such : "Against the background of blue sky, twelve golden five-pointed stars form a circle, representing the union of the peoples of Europe.
The number of stars is invariable, twelve being the symbol of perfection and entirety."
The European Anthem is the "Ode to Joy", arranged from the last movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
The European feast day is the 9th May.
Chapter II: The Legislature
Article 8The European Assembly is the legislature of the Union. It consists of two chambers, the European Parliament and the Senate of the Union, hereafter called "Senate", both having the same powers.
Either chamber, as well as the Commission following the procedure laid down in article 21 of this Constitution, has the right to propose legislation and a simple majority in both chambers is necessary to make the laws of the Union, except in the cases foreseen by this Constitution.
All laws of the Union have direct effect and are directly applicable.
Article 9 After a proposal for legislation receives the necessary majority in either chamber of the European Assembly, it shall be submitted to the other chamber.
This latter will indicate to the originating chamber within sixty days whether it rejects or accepts the proposal with or without amendments.
If it fails to do so, the proposal will become law. If it rejects the proposal, the proposal is defeated.
If the two chambers of the European Assembly reach the necessary majority on two differing versions of a proposal for legislation, their versions are brought before the Conciliation Committee of the European Assembly, consisting of an equal number of representatives of each chamber.
The Conciliation Committee will endeavour to make a common version from the two differing versions.
If such a common text is agreed upon by a majority within the representation of both chambers, it will return for a final vote in the two chambers.
If the vote fails in either chamber, the proposal is defeated.
Article 10The European Parliament consists of 650 members, elected every five years by a uniform election procedure, laid down in the electoral laws of the Union.
No member of the European Parliament shall be in the same time member of the Senate, or member of the Commission, or member of the Court of Justice, or member of the parliament or of the government of a Member State.
The electoral laws of the Union may provide for more incapabilities.
Article 11The Senate consists of one member per Member State, hereafter called "Senator".
The Member States shall decide the mode of election of their Senator. Each Senator has one vote.
Article 12 When the Union makes a proposal for the harmonization of the legislations of the Member States, following the procedure laid down in Article 35 of this Constitution, the Senate shall be replaced by the Council of Ministers, hereafter called "Council".
The Council shall consist of one member per Member State, appointed by the government of its Member State, notwithstanding the provisions of the following alineas of this article.
Representatives of regional authorities invested with legislative and executive powers over the subject concerned by the Council may fully participate in the decision-making process of the Council.

Their votes are relative to the number of inhabitants they represent.
This number and any future changes to it are notified to the Council.For the determination of the majority of Member States, they will be counted not as one Member State but as a fraction, representing the number of their citizens divided by the total number of inhabitants of the Member State of which they form a sub-entity.
Article 13 A simple majority in the Senate is a majority of its members.A qualified majority in the Senate is a three quarter majority of its members.
A simple majority in the European Parliament is a majority of the members present and voting, without counting abstentions.
A qualified majority in the European Parliament is a three quarter majority of the members present and voting.
Neither chamber of the European Assembly can vote on legislation, without a majority of its members voting.
The Council always takes its decisions by a three quarter majority of its members.
Article 14 All sessions of the European Assembly are open to the public and the agendas, minutes and voting records of all plenary sessions are to be published and available to the public.
Chapter III: The Executive Article 15
The executive powers are vested upon the Commission, which is composed of a maximum of fifteen members.
The Commission may not count more than one member coming from the same Member State.Article 16The European Assembly elects the members of the Commission among the members of the European Parliament by a simple majority after each integral renewal of the European Parliament.
The members of the Commission which put an end to their function get back their mandates of members of the European Parliament.
Article 17 The European Assembly elects the President of the European Union, hereafter called "President", and the Vice-President of the Commission, hereafter called "Vice-President", by a simple majority, among the members of the Commission, for a term of one year.
These mandates are not renewable for the following year.
The leaving President may not be elected Vice-President.If the President is not able to assume its function, in cases of disease, death, or impeachment, the Vice-President shall take office and shall continue the term.
If he assumed the function of President for more than 6 months, the Vice-President may not be elected as President, the following year.
Article 18 The Commission can only be dismissed by the European Assembly by the appointment of a new Commission.
The European Assembly may force one or several members of the Commission to resign upon a proposal of one third of the members of either house of the European Assembly.
Article 19 The Commission takes all decisions collectively.
Article 20 The Commission represents the Union in external relations, in the implementation of its foreign, security and defence policies and in international organisations.
Article 21The Commission has the right to propose legislation.
A proposal by the Commission has to be presented to the European Parliament.
Article 22 The President negotiates and concludes all treaties on behalf of and within the areas of exclusive competence of the Union.
Treaties concluded by the Commission enter into force after ratification by the European Assembly, by a simple majority.
Article 23 The President shall have the right to engage European Union military forces outside the territory of the Union, if a qualified majority in the European Assembly gives it the mandate to do so, notwithstanding the provisions of Article 24.
Article 24The President shall be in command of the European Union military forces. No military unit can be engaged outside of the territory of the Union over the objections of the Member State to which this unit belongs.Chapter IV: The Judicial power
Article 25The judicial power of the Union is vested upon the Court of Justice. It extends to all cases in law, arising under this Constitution, the laws of the Union and the treaties established under this Constitution.
Any dispute over the competences of the Union and the competences of its institutions will be resolved by the Court of Justice.
Article 26 The Court of Justice will be composed by a number of judges equal to the number of Member States, appointed by the European Assembly by a simple majority vote in each chamber.
Those chosen will be selected from among the most eminent jurists for a mandate of nine years.
A judge can only serve for one mandate.
The mandate of a judge can only be terminated before its expiration, for cause of death, resignation or by a ruling of the Court of Justice.
The Court of Justice can only rule on the termination of a judge's mandate for violations of the laws, criminal conviction or behaviour which could lead to the disrepute of the Court.
Article 27 The judges of the Court of Justice will choose from amongst their midst a president for a renewable mandate of three years.
The president chairs the meetings of the Court of Justice and represents the Court of Justice in its dealings.
Article 28 The rulings of the Court of Justice will be binding within the territory of the Union.
They shall take precedence over and the Court of Justice can annul all legislative acts, which it finds in conflict with this Constitution.
Article 29 The Court of Justice has the right to hear any case on Union legislation brought before it.
Article 30 The European Assembly has the right to establish, by a qualified majority, lower courts, without prejudice to the competences of the Court of Justice as set out in this Constitution.
Article 31 This Constitution and the laws and treaties adopted, or to be adopted, under it will be the supreme law of the Union and judges in every Member State will be bound hereby, any thing in the constitutions or laws of the Member States notwithstanding.
Article 32 The Union is a party to the European Convention of Human Rights and the Convention and its covenants will take precedence over all laws of the Union.
Article 33A ny conflict arising between this Constitution, the legislation and treaties made under it or the constitutions or laws of any of the Member States and the European Convention on Human Rights, will be decided upon by the European Court for Human rights and its verdicts will be binding on all courts within the territory of the Union.
Chapter V: The competences of the Union
Article 34 The Union shall be competent to the exclusion of its Member States in the following areas:I.
Within the field of Economic and Commercial Policy for:
The creation, the maintenance and the adaptation of a single market, with free movement of goods, persons, capital and services, within the European Union, including:
Copyright and trademark legislation; Competition Policy; State aids; Fisheries; Agricultural policy; Energy and nuclear power; Trans-European networks; Mutual recognition of diplomas of higher education; Monetary policy and the management of a single currency; Customs union and tariffs, antidumping legislation, external trade and commercial policyII.
Within the field of Foreign and Security Policy for:
Defence of the territory of the Union and its outside frontiers, upholding of the principles of the United Nations around the world.
The making of treaties on behalf of the European Union within its exclusive competences.III. Within the field of Justice and Home Affairs for: Immigration and border controls;
The fight against organised, transnational crimeIV. Environmental legislation in cases where more than one Member State is affected.
This does not preclude the European Assembly to entrust the Member States with the execution of the laws it passes within its exclusive competences, under the supervision of the Commission.
Article 35 The Union and the Member States have shared competences in the fields of:I. Within the field of Economic and Monetary Policy for: Consumer protection; Social policy; Research and technology; Natural resourcesII.
Within the field of Foreign and Security Policy for Foreign aidIII.

Within these areas the Union has the right to harmonise the legislations of the Member States and to pass legislation providing a framework within which its Member States can act.
The implementation of this legislation shall be supervised and co-ordinated by the Commission acting in co-operation with the governments of the Member States, represented in the Council, as provided in Article 12.
Article 36 The Member States shall have exclusive competence in all areas not foreseen in this Constitution and not entering in the scope of Article 37 of this Constitution.
Article 37 The European Assembly shall have the power to make all laws, which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution its competences and all other competences vested by this Constitution into the institutions of the Union.
In all areas that do not affect the interests of more than one Member State, the Member States, or the appropriate regional or local authorities shall have the right to pass legislation in as far as this legislation does not impinge upon an overriding interest of the Union.
Article 38 The European Assembly promulgates the laws of the Union and the Commission executes them, unless this Constitution decides otherwise.
Article 39 The budget of the Union is voted by a simple majority in the European Assembly, in as far as it does not exceed 3% of its gross domestic product.
A budget rise of the Union beyond 3% of its gross domestic product, has to be approved by the European Assembly with a qualified majority in both Houses.Chapter VI:
Amendments to the Constitution
Article 40 Any of the institutions which have the right to propose legislation, or a number of citizens of the Union practised in the electoral laws of the Union have the right to submit to the European Parliament, their proposals for amendments to the Constitution.
At the end of its mandate, the European Parliament can then by a simple majority propose to the next European Assembly amendments to the Constitution.
The newly elected European Parliament and the Senate can then amend the Constitution by qualified majority in both chambers.
Article 41 The current Constitution will enter into force after a three quarter majority of the Member States, by a procedure laid down by the Member State, approve it and the European Assembly ratifies it by a qualified majority.
The Union will take over the acquis communautaire.
Chapter VII: Changes to the Territory of Union
Article 42 Any European state which respects the principles of democracy, rule of law and human rights has the right to become a Member State of the Union, if its accession agreement is approved by a qualified majority in both houses of the European Assembly, or by the citizens of the Union and the Member States, by a procedure laid down in article 45.
Article 43 Any Member State shall have the right to secede from the Union if its citizens expresses itself for secession from the Union.
One year after notification of the European Commission the seceding Member State will be freed from all obligations towards the Union and its membership will terminated.
Article 44 Any change to the number of Member States shall be accepted by the concerned Member States, and by the citizens of the Union and the Member States, following a procedure laid down in article 45.
Any territorial change between the Member States shall be accepted by the concerned Member States and their citizens.
Article 45 Acts submitted to the vote of the citizens of the Union are accepted by the majority of the voters.
Acts submitted to the vote of the citizens of the Union and the Member States are accepted when the majority of voters and the majority of Member States approve them.
The result of a referendum in a Member State is the voice of the Member State.

"This monument is erected to preserve the memory and pourtrait of the right honorable Sir Edward Noel, Viscount Campden, Baron Noel of Ridlington, and Hicks of Ilmington. He was knight banneret in the warrs of Ireland, being young, and then created baronet anno 1611. He was afterwards made Baron of Ridlington. The other titles came unto him by right of Dame Juliana his wife, who stands collaterall to him in this monument. A lady of extraordinary great endowments, both of virtue and fortune.

Henry second son died a prisoner for his loyalty to his prince.
Her eldest daughter Elizabeth was married to John Viscount Chaworth. Mary her second daughter to the very noble knight Sir Erasmus de la Fontaine. Penelope her youngest daughter died a mayd 1633 This excellent lady for the pious and unparallel'd affections she retained to the memory of her deceased lord, caused this stately monument to be erected in her lifetime in September AD 1664"
