A pair of Soo Line SD40-2’s idle in the servicing area at Gladstone, Michigan in August, 1986, with a fairly worn GP30 in the background. The 764 was delivered in March, 1973, retired in 2003, and scrapped. The 778, built eight months after the 764, survives today.
CSX SD40-2's #8367 & #8199 bring a CWR train southbound through rural north Georgia at Crandall on CSX's K&A Etowah Subdivision. After walking back to my truck along the road I was greeted by a couple curious locals but ended up with a bag full of fresh pecans that were harvested that morning, thanks Clarence!
This was basically a house money shot. I had already accomplished the scenic "wow" shots of this train, as it trundled back to Trona I debated not even taking this picture. Nothing special... but the light was great so why not. Well, good thing I ignored the impulse to be a moron, because this exact shot is no longer possible. TRC 2007 and 2009 have been cut up this past week and will never again ply the desert. Acquired in 2002, Trona would end up with 3 former UP SD40-2's. The deck was stacked against them from the beginning. To start, they were already ratty looking and were replacing some gorgeous looking SD45-2's, painted in a resplendent red and silver scheme. Then of course, they weren't as neat as the former SP units on property still sporting their scarlett and grey. Third, a more common locomotive there was not. Union Pacific rostered 1,079 SD40-2's at one time, part of the staggering 4,029 produced by EMD between 1972 and 1989. At some point though, they transcended being mundane and entered the realm of cool again. In the age of GE dominance and Tier 4 nonsense, Trona's 7 EMD's became the rock against which progress gnashed its teeth. Watching these ugly beasts climb the grade, roaring through a hellish landscape on only two steel rails as they climb nearly vertical out of the basin.... I guess they aren't so mundane after all.

New Brunswick Southern Ry train number 121 enroute from Saint John, NB to McAdam, NB breaks the afternoon silence passing through the town of Tracy, NB with SD40-2 8145 leading SD70M-2's 6407-6409 trailing. Here, train 121 with paper, lumber and intermodal traffic hugs the North Oromocto River before disappearing into the deep woods. The days are numbered for the NBSR 8145 with the impending arrival of the next batch of "new" SD70's more than likely it will join the other stored older EMD's in the St. John deadline. Here is the color situation in Milton, NH as of Wednesday. Many of the area swamp Maples have turned color and died off already, but most of the rest is still pretty green. A solid string of painted 300's looked good behind the three 38-2's nonetheless.
On any typical day like this one on March 3, 2002 at IMRL’s Nahant Yard Roundhouse you could find an array of SW1200’s, GP9’s, SD40-2’s, and SD45’s. The IMRL flag flying next to the State of Iowa and USA flags is a nice touch, too.
A very BN morning under 21st Street in Denver. Despite one pumpkin this could be 1990. Worth the fight into the urban nightmare and unhoused unruly and angry of Denver, CO I join my friends to catch a nice matched set of SD40-2’s working the 36th street yards near downtown.

Two BNSF helper sets await their next shove at Crawford, NE on Sept. 11, 2000. One this day, four sets were being used, three with four SD40-2's and a fuel tender and one with two SD70MAC's and a fuel tender. The SD70MAC set seemed to be used primarily on manifests while the SD40-2 sets handled the unit coal trains. I was quite fond of this BNSF scheme on the SD40-2's.

CN's "LASER" passes Woodstock, Ontario with the typical mixed trio of CN/GTW GP40-2's. In pre-permanent ditch light days I always liked when the crew would just stick the extra flags in the brackets where the temporary ditch lights would be placed when used. This was most common on trains 238/239.

Fort Worth & Western Railway Freight Train ( Cresson Turn ) arrives into Cresson, TX. to do some work, then will turn back to Hodge Yard in Fort Worth, TX. Fort Worth & Western Railway recently acquired some former Union Pacific Railroad SD60M's, that are numbered 2033, 2034, 2035, 2036, 2037, & 2038, which are to replace SD40-2's 2015 & 2018 & 2 Gen Sets.
CN 394 was the sought after train for a few folks today. I'd hoped he'd show up at Bayview (Burlington), Ontario in my window of opportunity and in good light and it worked out. The BNSF unit is arriving for local CN service on HPH-payback, and two recent acquisitions in the form of ex-UP GP38-2's are fresh from Metro-East Industries in fresh paint.

Three B&M GP40-2's are handling ME-PO on the 'Stony Brook Branch' on this nice Spring morning. In December of 1977 the B&M leased 18 GP40-2's built by EMD, were a welcome sight and sound to this young railroad photographer's ears and eyes.
Spending time trackside on the B&M with Dad, let me develop my serious interest in railroads and photography.
Then in 1982 I witnessed it all go away was just like that, the Guilford story has to be one of the worst in all of American railroading. A guy buys three railroads and runs them into the ground at 10 miles per hour. All he cared about was fiber-optic cable rights on the right of way of the railroads, moving freight or taking care of employees was not on his radar!

SALMOREJO, 2026
Salmorejo is a traditional soup originating from Córdoba, Andalusia, southern Spain, made of tomato, bread, extra virgin olive oil and garlic.
The salmorejo is served cold and may be garnished with diced Spanish ibérico ham and diced hard-boiled eggs.
First references to the word "salmorejo" date back to the 17th century, being a transitional soup between the old and new world.
Differences with gazpacho and variations: Salmorejo is more pink-orange in appearance than gazpacho, and is much thicker and creamier in texture, because it includes more olive oil and a different kind of bread (in gazpacho, stale bread soaked in water is generally used).
There are several variations in Andalusia, including ardoria and porra antequerana (with bits of tuna as topping).
In the photo, taken in San Juan de Los Terreros (Almería, Spain) you can see those pieces of Iberian ham, pieces of boiled egg, a drizzle of olive oil and the green band is parsley.
