Milwaukee Road train "Southeastern"204 is rolling through Schneider, IN., with a trio of SD40-2's. The train is utilizing trackage rights over Conrail (former NYC Big Four Egyptian Line). In 1979, the Milwaukee Road abandoned their own line (The Southeastern), and started using Conrail, to get down to Terre Haute. I remember thinking how cool these two digit SD40-2's were, because they used to roam the Milwaukee Roads Pacific Extension.

Twelve years after the Delaware & Hudson inherited the Reading’s GP39-2’s, one of them is still wearing its Reading colors. It’s seen here with a D&H GP38-2 and a National Railway Leasing F45 pulling a northbound D&H manifest through the fall colors at Bainbridge, New York.

In a rare move today, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum pulled 105 hoppers out of storage from Copperhill, TN bound for scrap. TVRM operates a section of the former L&N 'Old Line' or 'Hook & Eye Line' between Etowah and Copperhill mainly running the tourist train and a very occasional storage car move. GMTX GP38-2's #2005 & #2004 bracket TVRM GP38-2 #5109 as they ease across the Hiawassee River at Reliance, TN.
A Vermont Railway Qualifying Extra is seen blasting north over the Sugar River trestle in Claremont, NH on the NECR Palmer Subdivision. With the closure of the Middlebury Tunnel on the VRS Northern Subdivision starting in the coming weeks, Vermont Railway will be detouring trains over the former CV now New England Central mainline from Burlington to Bellows Falls, providing some unique photo opportunities for a normally nocturnal stretch of railroad. Although I would like to see matching VRS power, the power will primarily be GATX GP38-2's that were leased by the State of Vermont specifically for these detours.

With the FURX GP38-2 in the shop for only the second or third time since showing up on the property a number of years ago, this was a good week to try to shoot an all green consist on the NHN. Unfortunately winter is here and the sand trains are short so the GP18 has been staying home. It was great to see the matched set of clean GP38-2's in good paint, hopefully in the future this will be a daily occurance. The heavy rains that brought brown season back for a few days have raised the water level pretty high at Union Meadows.

An SD40 and two SD40-2’s lead a westbound Conrail manifest into Reading, Pennsylvania on the former Reading main line. The lead unit is passing the former Reading Brewing Company brewery, which closed in 1976, the same year that Reading Company was folded into Conrail. The brand was later resurrected and is now produced by Ruckus Brewing.
For a time in 1979, several Delaware & Hudson GP39-2’s showed up in Conrail service. A few Conrail B23-7’s were spotted on D&H trains, so I believe that these were loans for evaluation, especially since Conrail was beginning to replace its first- and early second-generation fleet. Here two D&H GP39-2’s join a Conrail U30B on the Saucon Drill in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, while a PB&NE switcher/slug set work in the background. The EMD’s are no strangers to these tracks, having begin their lives as Reading units.
For a period of time, rumors would circulate around INRD that it should acquire the CSX (former B&O) Decatur subdivision across eastern Illinois. Eventually, in 2018, CSX did sell it...but INRD was not the buyer. However, the new owner, Watco Lines, leased two INRD GP38-2's for their first 90 days. This gave guys like me, the chance to get scenes like this. Decatur & Eastern Illinois job 101 is westbound at Newman, IL, with INRD power leading.

We are at a location known as Egypt at the east end of CSX's former C&O Fulton Yard at Richmond. VA on March 9, 1991. This unit coal train has arrived from the west with two SD40-2's, crews have been swapped, and they are waiting for the pusher, with two more SD40-2's, to be added to the rear. Soon the show shall begin with four SD40-2's starting the 12,000 ton coal train on the .63% grade. It was a sound show for sure. Back then, I truly didn't appreciate the SD40-2's as much as I should have.
An evening Canadian National local in Hamilton, Ontario has just crossed over Burlington Street as it heads into Bunge with a pair of GP38-2's to pick up covered hoppers. They will then shove out of the facility and continue on to work other industries under the cover of darkness.

My first visit to Lehigh Valley territory after the Conrail merger was a sobering experience. The LV’s second generation road power was divided between Conrail and the newly-expanded Delaware & Hudson, with the D&H getting the C420’s and GP38-2’s, and Conrail getting the GP38AC’s, U23B’s and C628’s. Although the D&H power frequently visited the area, they were immediately rebranded to ensure that they did not get sent to some remote Conrail terminal in the confusion that could ensue in a one-day consolidation of six major railroads, as well as several smaller ones. Arriving in Bethlehem on Conrail Day 4, I found a sea of Penn Central road power, with some Erie-Lackawanna and Reading thrown in. I spied one train moving east with three LV U23B's and a PC NW2. This would be the last time I ever saw pure LV road units.
With two SD70M-2's on each end and 104 ore hoppers to load, the head and rear end of Canadian National's U702 meet as the train slowly makes its way around the loading loop at the dock in Conneaut, Ohio. The train crossing the bridge over Conneaut Creek, which is the only four track railroad swing bridge in the world, though the western track has been removed for an access road.

A trio of SD40-2's (7225, 6822, 7267) and a fuel tender (FT-9) make up a Crawford Hill helper set as they shove on a loaded coal train that consisted almost entirely of KCS Thrall hopper cars. They are seen climbing Crawford Hill in May of 1985 with extended vision caboose FW&D #179 trailing behind.
