Time seems to be moving at an exponential pace. I'm going to guess that this was one of my many encounters with BA5. A very reliable middle of the day turn back south out of Burnham Yard for Blue Island. I hid in the weeds on the north side of Calumet Park for this view.

The B&O mainline east from Barr Yard is running across the center of the frame from right to left. The wiggly wiggles on the left side is the Harbor's connection to what remains of the PRR's SC&S. And of course the Harbor is on the....well, maybe it isn't so obvious. Calumet Park also contained the crossing of the Michigan Central's mainline with the B&O and PRR. The present Harbor Belt main east from Calumet Park is actually the Michigan Central main from what Ive put together. The ancient Harbor predecessor Chicago, Hammond and Western would have sliced across the MC at Calumet Park way back in the day as they were actually destined for Whiting, via Calumet City Yard, State Line and Burnham Yard.

At least I think I have that right...

about 2 weeks before we left, Scotch and I were driving around Thurmont, Maryland by the base of the Catoctin Mountains on a very rainy day when I came across a stream under a small bridge. We followed it up the road and found this perfect place. It's private land that has a sign reading it can be used respectfully and we ended up spending about an hour here until it got too dark and wet. I returned a few days later in the rain again without Scotch and stayed until it got dark. When he's with me and he needs to stay in the car, I never go out of sight. This time, I could explore about a half mile up the stream and only stopped when I ran out of light (and realized I was now somewhere on private property). There was enough solid ground around the pretty fast moving stream to get some very close and interesting angles and the drizzle really made everything shine just a bit more.

It's an amazing place and I had planned to return before we left for California but got too busy with all the preparations, packing and planning. When/If we ever return to Maryland, this will likely be the first place I go.

My personal favorite from a visit to the station of Liege, Guillemins. It's an impressive work of art by Santiago Calatrava, i'll certainly visit it again, there are so many angles and ways to see and make different pictures.

Fallen Guardians #2: Amberley, West Sussex by Nic Joynson

377421 slows for its stop at Amberley in the south downs while working 1C07, the 0717 Bognor Regis to London Victoria service.

Amberley station is on the Arun Valley Line and was opened by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway in 1863.

While the semaphore signal above the train is of Southern Railway vintage, the down starter signal on the left is older still. It is of London, Brighton and South Coast vintage, pre-dating the 1923 grouping, and being a steel lattice post, complete with a finial.

Resignalling finally came to the Arun Valley in 2014, when the semaphore signalling and associated signal boxes were finally removed and control was moved to Three Bridges.

In 2020, manual signalling continues to survive on the network in West Sussex: both Bognor Regis and Littlehampton stations continue to be semaphore signalled.
