December 10th: Some of the cars at VSCC events just ooze character - like the RIP Special. A four-wheeled Morgan with a fabric body that ends in a sharp point. With Charlie Martin at the wheel it's always exciting to watch.
NCB Whittle Colliery was located alongside the A1 road in Northumberland and connected to the ECML by a 6 mile branch line through woods and fields with a few minor road crossings.
After steam was displaced, it was worked by a fleet of ex-BR class10 shunters, most of which had additional headlights fitted at each end for working this branch in the dark.
Here we see No56 (D4068) and No52 (D4072) outside the shed in August 1981. When the colliery was closed in 1985 No56 was cut up on site here, whereas No52 was cut up at Philadelphia in Co Durham.
