counting box

Reading One Million Years, an installation by Japanese artist On Kawara. The people in the box are part of a sixteen-stong team reading out years in sequence around the clock. Although the full work includes all the million years on either side of its creation date of 1969, the readers will be lucky to get through a quarter of that in the week of exhibition.

The idea, I guess, is to mark the monumental passage of time, a kind of riff on the old chestnut "if a human life lasted only a day" - in this work, "a life is only a few sentences and history a few pages". Vox pop was predictably mixed.
