LNER Class A4, 60009 (4488) 'Union of South Africa'

The fabulous Sir Nigel Gresley designed LNER Class A4 Pacific steam locomotive number 60009 (British Railways number, LNER 4488) 'Union of South Africa' outside Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon in County Durham (UK).

 

60009 is here for 'The Great Goodbye' event which is the final part of the Mallard 75 celebrations which commemorates the 75th anniversary of sister steam locomotive Mallard's record breaking run of 126mph in 1938. A record that still stands today.

 

The A4 on the right is 4489 'Dominion of Canada' which is in the UK on its holidays from the Canadian Railway Museum at Delson Saint-Constant, Quebec Canada. So for 4489 just being at the Mallard 75 celebrations alongside its stable mates is an achievement in itself. 'Dominion of Canada' will return back to Canada later in 2014.
