red thing

what is this and why is it biting me?! Anybody know? Sorry for the bad photo but hey...it was biting me!

 

Update: Christine Hanrahan has narrowed it down to a Hemiptera nymph of some kind and that it wasn't biting me, it was "probing my skin for minerals".

 

This seems like a matter of semantics since the probing of skin involves penetrating said skin with mouth parts.
