Squeezing the thimble

Before putting the final squeeze on the set up, give the thimble a tap to set it in the bight. You can also use a piece of round stock or a screw driver to lever the thimble down onto the service by placing the tip under the acme threads of the jaws and pushing down with the handle.

 

Failure to set the thimble can make for a loose thimble after the splice is finished. If you have a "loose" thimble, try running a stranded piece of marlin or seine twine down the score to seat it better and trim the loose ends off.
