When Geese Duck

Canada geese with goslings on a pond at the University of Colorado's east campus. Several large snapping turtles living in this and neighboring ponds were keeping the number of surviving goslings to a minimum,

And there were other predators about that might take goslings too, including watersnakes, mink, weasels, bobcats, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, owls, hawks, bears, and even mountain lions, but still the geese are thriving. So much so that Denver has occasional goose round-ups...

I don't know what this behavior is about. The geese do it from time to time, but not always. I suspect they are trying to be less conspicuous by lowering their profile, but who knows?

So far, no word from the geese to clear this all up.
