Next comes the iron. This device is a large 2 sided flat iron that can heat up to about 500 to 600 degrees. Here it is set for 450 degrees. It is clamped between the pipe sections and the pipe sections are forced against the plates. In about 5 minutes you can begin to see the pipe material begin to 'mushroom' indicating that they are ready to be joined.
