Working Lives, Lost Skills series - The Papermaker - Cutting linen fragments

At Two Rivers papermill in Exmoor, Somerset they make hand made papers for artists who want the finest surfaces on which to paint. Using traditional methods, they add linen or cotton fibre to the mix together with gelatine and sizing agents to create an acid-free paper that lasts for decades and is as effective for oils, pastels and acrylics as it is for watercolours. Here papermaker Neil Hopkins cuts pieces of blue linen that will provide complexity, strength and character to a unique type of paper.

This image is part of my "Working Lives, Lost Skills" project through which I am recording the work of some of the last known exponents of traditional rural crafts and industries. I hope to eventually use some of the images to develop an exhibition and possibly a book.
