On Wednesday, July 8, at approximately 1:30AM, the American Red Cross Serving King & Kitsap County responded to a building fire in downtown Seattle at the Buddhist Temple located on South Weller Street.

We deployed a team of volunteers and supplies to open a shelter a few blocks away, at the International District/Chinatown Community Center (719 8th Ave. South), providing shelter to 18 displaced individuals on the first night. Followup relief services will include shelter, food, clothing and other immediate needs.

On average, the American Red Cross Serving King & Kitsap Counties responds to an emergency like this every 48 hours. However, this was a particularly busy week, with 4 fire calls and 2 shelters opened in just 3 days.

All Red Cross assistance is free of charge. For more information about the local Red Cross chapter, visit www.seattleredcross.org.
