Five Below #622 (15,300 square feet)
3040 Evans Street, Suite 127, University Commons, Greenville, NC
Opened March 21st, 2014, renovated in summer 2022; originally part of Kroger (1996-December 18th, 2010)
Greenville's Five Below is located in a chunk of the city's former Kroger, specifically the store's left quarter that would've housed the deli/bakery, a bank, and one of the entryways. Kroger sold the store to Harris Teeter in 2010, and while they operate out of the majority of the building this was a massive Kroger for its' time, occupying about 68,000 square feet; the average Harris Teeter is about 50-55,000 square feet, so they just didn't have any use for this section of the building. Five Below wiped the space clean of most Kroger traces, but you can still see where the entryway was over the checkout area because the ceiling is higher than the rest of the salesfloor (the warehouse ceiling in general is also a Kroger leftover). At 15,000 square feet this was also a much larger than usual Five Below than the average 8,000 square foot store in the mid 2010s, and because of this they kept most of the original layout when they were renovated in 2022 and added the "Beyond" section in the back. The store's stockroom is located on the very left side of the space, and this arrangement interests me the most because it's where Kroger's receiving area was. It existed as an additional space separate from the salesfloor and could accommodate three semi-trailers, and while it is included as Five Below's space are they actually using it? I kinda doubt it.
