Harris Teeter interior

Harris Teeter #378 (46,876 square feet)

1320 Colonial Avenue, Norfolk, VA

Opened March 9th, 2011 (original location on site opened in April 2000)

Harris Teeter is a chain that doesn't stray much from its' default design, in my experience. An average newly-constructed store will usually look like this Williamsburg location, but here in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood they strayed from the norm when they rebuilt the store on this property: it's spread across two levels! I believe they went this route because the property wouldn't have been able to accommodate a new one-story 46,000 square foot building, and I'd say that stacking it was a wise decision. Not only is it practical, but for a supermarket nerd like myself it's a visual treat. Upon entry, checkout lanes and restrooms are to the left and produce/bakery/deli occupy most of the first level's front end. Behind those departments are the general grocery aisles, including dairy and frozen. The second floor is built above those aisles, and it includes the pharmacy, health/beauty, and wine, as well as another set of restrooms. This floor can be accessed by either a stairway or elevator, and there are two of each included. This isn't the company's only two-story building (Charlotte, Raleigh, and DC have them as well), but amongst all their other Hampton Roads locations it certainly does stand out!
