Today, 28.10.17 in Brisbane.
One hundred years ago today and one of the last Cavalry charges from the Australian Light Hose brigade, including the New Zealanders, against the Turkish army to save the overtake of Palestine. A victory ensured due only to the brave soles that had one single mindset and it did not include self-survival. As they once said, “Do the job at any cost” Praise the Lord they did and more all across a dozen different deserts. How on earth can anyone, including me, live up to or give what these so young soles gave?
I have no doubt, as they set off on horseback, charged the line of enemy, endured machine gun fire, that their hearts were full of fear, yet their minds were full of 'what ever it takes to turn the course of tide and win the day'
I fade into insignificance in comparison.
Freedom of Entry March, 10am, 28.10.17 Adelaide St. Brisbane
Beersheba Centenary Fun Day, 11am-3pm, South Bank Piazza
The Australian Army's 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) will hold its largest ever mounted Freedom of Entry March into Brisbane City on the 28th October to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba. The parade will see over 150 troops, 20 horses and 65 military vehicles including the Regiment’s brand new Tanks travel down Adelaide Street at 10am before being halted and challenged by members of the Queensland Police Force. Brisbane’s Lord Mayor will inspect the troops and allow them to continue armed, with swords and lancers drawn, flags flying, drums beating and band playing.
The granting of Freedom of Entry is a tradition with medieval origins and is the highest accolade a city can bestow upon a group. It is a mark of trust and confidence for citizens to allow a formed body of armed soldiers to enter a city and is no less readily won or lightly given today than it was centuries ago.
Following the March, 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (Queensland Mounted Infantry) and RSL Queensland at a Fun Day at South Bank Parklands. The kids will be able to get up close to the armoured vehicles from the parade and talk to Light Horse soldiers about them, as well as step back to WWI with horses and riders from the Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop.
