Howard Johnson's Restaurant Auburn,ME
Former Howard Johnson's Restaurant located at 775 Washington St. North (Route 202) in Auburn,ME. The restaurant was demolished in late 2018. This HJ Restaurant opened on July 7th 1940 as the 136th location in the fast growing chain. The Howard Johnson's operated until June 1959 at which point the eatery was renamed Phil-o-Mar restaurant. The Phil-o-Mar (named after its owners "Phil and Mary Oulette") which offered a menu very similar to Howard Johnson's operated until late 1970 at which point building was sold and subsequently converted into an Italian eatery which operated under the name Rolandeau's Restaurant. The Italian restaurant operated until mid 2018 when Rolandeau's owner and head chef Roland Nadeau announced his retirement ending the 47 year run of the business. After the closure of Rolandeau's the building was demolished and replaced with a dull, non-de-script building which is housing a church.
Despite not having been a Howard Johnson's for nearly 60 years the exterior of the building remained exceptionally intact minus its orange roof and a small expansion.
