A Study in Crimson (Explored July 21, 2026)

The House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) is a small, highly adaptable songbird native to North America. This adult male displays a vibrant crimson wash across his forehead, throat, and chest that contrasts with his soft, brown-patterned plumage. A tiny fragment of green vegetation clings to his stout, conical bill, which is naturally adapted for cracking seeds and foraging among garden foliage. The rich red pigmentation in his feathers is derived directly from carotenoids in his diet, making the brilliance of his coloration an indicator of overall health and foraging success.
