John Mann, Spirit of The West concert at PNE 2010 on Aug 29, 2010
One of the most appealing qualities of Vancouver-based Spirit of The West is that their songs are very easy to like. Many you just have to listen to it once and you’re hooked. It is not that they are familiar to the ears. They are not but that endearing Celtic instrumentation certainly helps. Like Sadness Grows for example, which is very catchy and of course, Home For A Rest which was so well-known among the concert crowd that lead singer John Mann let the audience sang part of it as he picked his guitar on stage and later dubbed them as the PNE choir. Save This House shows a more edgy side of the band.
In VIDEO 2, Spirit of The West played two very different songs. Geoffrey Kelly sang The Old Sod which was a pub number about being a Scot oversea eager to cut old ties and yet couldn’t shake that Scottish-ness ingrained in himself. In Political, lead singer John Mann sang about a romantic relationship that had gone sour because every little thing about the couple had to be so ‘political’. The work of Mann and Kelly comes from the heart and they are felt rather than heard. Future CDs and concerts by this Vancouver-based folk alternative band is not to be missed.
